BIS Gallery

Art is often a subject that requires the teacher to allow the students a certain amount of fun and freedom. Students are allowed to follow their own instincts, so the result becomes secondary to individual expression. “Paint by numbers” is not correct, students are not supposed to follow a formula. However, fun turns into chaos if it has no ordered structure and discipline. There are formal elements like color, composition etc. that is imperative, but sometimes the formal elements have to be sacrificed to allow the student to freely create. The process is often more important than the end product. Through art, students learn a lot about themselves. Their inner discovery is more important than a “good” work of art.

We built an art gallery to help students see the value of creative work and give them an opportunity to get involved and explore their own creativity, which is something that many don’t get the chance to do.

In the BIS gallery, there are paintings, drawings, photographs, and mixed media works. The selection of art on view reflects the ambitious imaginations and diversity of the creatives of tomorrow.

It's so great to finally be back at school.

Kids are excited and work so hard from the day one. Even if we had very productive online lessons nothing is comparable to live lessons.

Over the past week we have been focusing on reviewing jungle animals and Chinese New Year. Kids are able to explore different activities throughout the day such as colourful worksheets about jungle animals, PPTs about Chinese New Year and a handmade craft that helps us to review and learn new letters. This week we also had an amazing time making lanterns with rabbits, preparing play dough dumplings and we sang variety of songs related to Chinese New Year and jungle animals.

This week during the phonics class we have learned about the letters. To be able to identify the sound of the letter we played an interactive game on the touch screen board using fun and colorful games and played games using different objects that starts with letter s such a mystery box, I spy and many more.

Next month we are going to learn about sea world and spring. Stay tuned.

Chinese New Year: Tangyuan Making

It’s the first week back to school, we were lucky enough to catch Chinese New Year by the tail. As our students are from all over the World, we Nursery B decided to make Tangyuan on Lantern festival, a traditional food that represents the importance of family and being in harmony with each other.

We are reading stories about the race of the animals, the terrifying ‘Nian’ monster and how people celebrate their Chinese New Year. As we read more stories about the Chinese New Year we understand why we have certain traditions, such as lighting fireworks and firecrackers, wearing red during the Chinese New year. We also discovered that making Tangyuan is not as hard as we thought, a simple press, spread, place the fillings and roll, a delicious Tangyuan is made. It was so good that they were asking for more.

We did an experiment with food colourings to see firework in a glass jar. We mixed in all the colours we like, yellow, red, pink, green, blue. We all counted down together before mixing the colours like we would with fireworks. Three! Two! One! We were all impressed with the how beautiful it was.

Our nursery class is adapting to school and following class rules well. We are all able to sit nicely and stay concentrated in class well. We are so proud of the progress they made and look forward to an exciting lunar year.

Reflection of Light

The students in year 2 have been learning about light in their science online. On our return to school we decided to look at how light travels again. This week we focused on reflection. We researched into how shiny surfaces reflect light and can used to made opposite images such as when we use mirrors. We used this knowledge to make kaleidoscopes which have multiple shiny surfaces inside them. The students crafted their own kaleidoscopes and designed patterns to view inside them. Year 2 had lots of fun exploring this idea and sharing their kaleidoscopes with each other.

Pen Pal Letters and Force Experiments

Year 5 have had an amazing first week back on campus. We have enjoyed welcoming new friends into our class and being together after 3 months of online classes.

The students settled back into offline learning easily and they have worked incredibly hard in their lessons this week. To welcome them back onto campus and celebrate birthdays and special occasions that had passed, the students had a party on Monday afternoon and they sampled different British snacks which Ms. Danielle had brought back from the UK - they particularly enjoyed trying the delicious British chocolate!

In their English classes, the students read their letters from their UK friends and they wrote their Pen Pal letters which will be posted to the UK next week. They also learnt how to type a letter on Microsoft Word in their English with ICT classes. The students completed some very neatly typed letters which are excellent as this is their first attempt at letter writing on a computer.

In their Math classes, the students have been learning about angles and how they can identify the different types of angles. They learnt how to use protractors correctly and at the end of the week they began learning about supplementary angles.

The students thoroughly enjoyed their Science lessons this week. They reviewed magnetism and the different types of forces. On Thursday, they took part in an activity that had six different stations. Each station had different equipment on it and the students had to decide what force could be shown using the equipment provided. For example; a balloon, a jug filled with water and a bowl. The students could use this to show upthrust. They needed to fill the bowl with water and then inflate the balloon and place it into the water. The students worked in pairs but without assistance to see what they had remembered from their online classes.

Fantastic work, Year 5! Well done for your studious attitudes!

Term 2 Icebreakers

Year 6 kicked off their first day back in school with three fun games to get us reacquainted after a LONG time apart! We played Hot Seat, in which a word was displayed behind a student seated in the front row, and those in the audience had to try to inform the seated student as much as possible without giving away the actual word.

This was a fun icebreaker activity before another interactive game in which students were encouraged to pick a question at random and provide an answer. The game assisted students in reading, processing, and speaking about themselves from various and interesting perspectives! To encourage further conversation, the listening students could ask the reading students questions about their answers.

Finally, as a quick area and perimeter review for Mathematics, we played a quick game in groups reviewing squares, rectangles, triangles, and symmetry! A fantastic start to the new term!

Assessment for Mathematics

Assessment for Mathematics students, for obvious reasons, has been long overdue. Students for much of the week were revising, and sat their exams on the Thursday. You wouldn't call this week in Mathematics the most exciting week, but certainly one of the busiest weeks for students. I like to think the students have been working hard to prepare for class exams, assessing topics covered over the two months of online learning. The past few months have been a challenge for everyone, especially the students. Student progress in Mathematics can only improve from this point on; the assessment assists me in identifying areas of improvement.

How Root Hairs Absorb Water

Year 9 conducted an investigation based on how root hairs absorb water, in this investigation we used the celery stalk to observe how water moves up to the leaves, we observed that the water passes through the cell wall and the cell membrane and into the cytoplasm then it gets distributed to all parts of the plant.

Welcome back to BIS campus!

It’s extremely excited and happy to see everyone in person. We also have some new faces joining us this year, welcome to you all!

The Early year little ones met together at the end of the 1st day. They were singing, laughing, and dancing to celebrate the 1st day of school.

Our wonderful Year 6 have performed different percussions with Ms. Susan and played the violin “Joy of Spring” which they just learnt and rehearsed in the morning. Well done Year 6!

Mr. Edward led all early years to sing “Baby Shark” and “Twinkle” with ukulele accompaniment. Everyone enjoyed and had fun being together.

A new beginning makes a good end. I believe this will be a very fantastic year in BIS 2023.

Assessment through Game Play

- Written by Petals -

Swipe down for Chinese

As we kick start the new semester our EAL department starts of by working closely with homeroom teachers and assisting by having review lesson and assessments.

While assessment is built into most games, EAL teachers also assess learning after game play by having students correct one another, create a strategy guide, or develop game scenarios as well as assigning students as game coordinators.

Using games for assessment is about more than tracking points. Recently, we have seen a lot of growth in the digital games and assessment field, developing data collection engines that use sophisticated tools to measure student learning and provide teachers with targeted feedback.

But one of the most common misconceptions we have come across is that all good learning games must assess learners within the game. The truth is that assessment happens around a game, during the game and even after the game, EAL teachers design and provide authentic, useful assessment tasks for students one way being through game-related performance tasks that are as interesting and engaging as the game itself.

These assessment tasks  offer valuable ways to unlock the instructional power of games and support a student-centered learning environment. Teachers can create game-related performance tasks that are as interesting and engaging as the game itself.

Assessment During Game play

"How do we assess learning within a game?"

Whatever game we choose, and whether it's digital or analog, walking around and questioning individual students and groups about their choices is a great way to find out what they're learning or struggling with. Just watching and taking notes what we observe, desired skills in action is also a simple way to gather formative data during game play.
