Year 4 outdid themselves! During this unit on light energy, students learned about reflection and refraction as they grasped that light travels in a waveform. Through hands-on activities, they saw how prisms, magnifying glasses and polarised lenses work. They also gained an understanding of the colours of the rainbow as the visible spectrum and what dispersion entails, each colour corresponding to a different wavelength.


四年级超越了自己!在这个关于光能的单元中,学生们学习了反射和折射,因为他们掌握了光以波形传播。通过实践活动,他们了解了棱镜、放大镜和偏振透镜的工作原理。他们还了解了彩虹的颜色作为可见光谱,以及色散的含义,每种颜色对应不同的波长。



The Law of Reflection

The law of reflection says that no matter which direction light hits a smooth surface, the light reflects off at an equal angle. 


反射定律

The aims covered many requirements for knowledge and understanding, and working scientifically. The children were taught to:

• Recognise that they need light to see things, and that dark is the absence of light

•  Notice that light is reflected from surfaces

• Recognise that light from the sun can be dangerous and that there are ways to protect their eyes

• Recognise that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by a solid object

•  Find patterns in the way that the size of shadows changes.

For this week's science classes, the students had individual light and colour experiments to complete at home. They had to write reports on the investigation to present their findings to their classmates.

The students used the light refraction and reflection demonstrator to indicate the incidence and reflection of light. The students could successfully demonstrate the difference between reflection and refraction. In reflection, the light ray is reflected back to the same medium, while, in refractions, the light ray passes from one medium to another. While in reflection, the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection, whereas these angles are not equal in refraction. Thus adequately indicating theoretical knowledge in a practical demonstration.


学生们使用光折射和反射演示器来指示光的入射和反射。学生们可以成功地演示反射和折射之间的区别。在反射中,光线被反射回同一介质,而在折射中,光线从一种介质传递到另一种介质。在反射时,入射角等于反射角,而在折射时,这些角度不相等。因此,在实践演示中充分体现了理论知识。



In addition, the students enjoyed working in their groups to label the parts of an eye. Further discussion in this biology class led to learning more about how light enters the eye and changes the light into electrical signals, which travel through the optic nerve to the brain. The brain interprets or reads these signals as an image, or picture, of the object.


此外,学生们喜欢在小组里为眼睛的各个部位贴标签。在这节生物学课上的进一步讨论使我们了解了更多关于光如何进入眼睛并将光转变为电信号,这些电信号通过视神经传递到大脑。大脑将这些信号解释或读取为物体的图像或图片。

The students finished the lesson by making the most spectacular rainbow quicksand art bottles. Next, they are excited to start researching the inventors of light, Humphry Davy (an electric light) and Thomas Edison (a carbon filament light bulb). This will conclude our unit on light.
