爱莎科学城数学周

March 13 to 17 was ISA Maths Week. During this week, each class was enthusiastic about the variety of maths activities that were offered. Children of all ages, from Early Years to Secondary, found their own fun and challenges in these activities. Different forms of activities such as parent classes, graphing games and interdisciplinary project studies not only deepened the children's understanding of mathematics, but also developed their observation, logical thinking, creativity and teamwork skills.

3月13日到17日是爱莎数学周。在这个数学周,每个班级都热情洋溢地展开了各种丰富多彩的数学活动。从幼儿园到中学部,每个年龄段的孩子们都能够在其中找到属于自己的乐趣和挑战。家长课堂、图形游戏和跨学科的项目研究等不同形式的活动,不仅让孩子们加深了对数学知识的理解,更是培养了他们的观察力、逻辑思维、创造力和团队协作能力。

Early Years 幼儿园

During Maths Week, our Early Years held a class for parents on the topic of 'Understanding the Mathematics Curriculum and Teaching in Early Years'. Parents attended the class to learn about the maths curriculum and how to help their children learn maths better.

幼儿园在数学周举办了一场主题为“了解幼儿园数学课程与教学”的家长课堂。家长们踊跃参加,共同了解了幼儿园的数学课程以及如何帮助孩子更好地学习数学。


At the end of the class, parents had the opportunity to go into the different classes and participate in maths activities with the children. The children were enthusiastic to show their parents what they had learnt about maths and encouraged them to join in the fun. Not only did the parents share in the children's joy, but they were also able to experience first-hand how maths is taught in the kindergarten, which will be very useful in helping their children to learn maths better in the future.

在课堂结束后,各位家长还有机会进入不同班级和孩子们一起参与数学活动。孩子们充满热情地向家长展示着他们所学到的数学知识,并鼓励家长们也一起参与其中。家长们不仅可以分享孩子们的喜悦,更能够亲身体验到幼儿园的数学教学方式,这将对于日后帮助孩子更好地学习数学大有裨益。

Primary School 小学

In Primary School, each grade did different things. Some grades did stations, which they went round with a passport with their parents showing their parents the different types of maths activities that they have been doing in class. Other grades did a whole class design challenge that they did using the different shapes they had been learning about. In grade 2 we had 6 stations each with a different theme - 3D shapes bingo, time, basic facts challenge etc.

In grade 4 our focus was statistics which was perfect for math week and for using our inquiry skills with the book ‘If the World Were a Village’. Our students created infographics based on the information they learned from the updated video clip which was based on the book. Our parents helped our students look at the data and think about what the numbers represented. The students converted the data to fractions and percentages. It was wonderful to see our parents interacting with their children and there was a buzz of math humming around the classroom.

On the day parents visited our class during Maths Week, Grade 5A students participated in group mental math games. The teacher quickly displayed a fraction on the board in which students had to quickly produce equivalent fractions. However, students couldn't repeat an equivalent fraction that another student in their group had already stated. It was a fast-paced game since the teacher changed the fraction without notice. Students had to quickly adapt and continue to produce equivalent fractions throughout the game. Students then worked in small differentiated groups, focusing on fundamental fraction and operations skills.

The groups in the classroom practiced finding the least multiple/least common denominator and greatest common factor, adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators, and finding the missing number in an equation with fractions (algebra). Some students also were learning how to multiply fractions using models. The teacher and teaching assistants worked with students in these small groups and rotated after each mini-lesson was complete. Students used IXL on their iPads to practice a variety of fraction skills. At the end of the lesson, students created artwork related to fraction concepts.

Grade 5B students learned about probabilities and representing expected outcomes using fraction. They experimented with dies, coins and counters. Students rolled two dies to determine the probability of each outcomes. They also experimented with coins to calculate the probabilities of flipping two heads, a head and a tail, and two tails.

G5B的学生学习了概率和用分数表示预期结果。他们用模具、硬币和计数器进行实验。学生们掷出两个骰子以确定每种结果的概率。他们还用硬币进行实验,计算出翻转两个头、一个头和一个尾、以及两个尾的概率。


Secondary School 中学

Monday 13th March saw the commencement of a very successful Mathematics week at ISA Science City. In the weeks prior to it starting, many students engaged in trans-disciplinary activities wherein the Mathematics department partnered with various other subject areas in a series of small projects. Students reveled in the opportunity to make links between Mathematics and other subject areas. During the week itself, activities, games and puzzles were organised each day to keep students both entertained and engaged. A newsletter came out each day with articles, puzzles, examples of student work, and kept students abreast of planned activities. The week culminated in finale assembly where photos were shared, further games were played and certificates and medals were awarded. We were most fortunate to be joined by a member of our parent body, Mr DeSandies, who spoke about the importance of Mathematics as a tool that can be used to help make sense of the world and solve problems in any context. We were thrilled with a great deal of positive student feedback and look forward to future similar events.
