As the new school year begins, ISA Liwan embarks on a hopeful and fresh journey. This academic year is brimming with endless possibilities, and the Open Day event on October 14th marks our exciting first step. It signifies the start of a new chapter in our diverse educational journey-one filled with energy, knowledge, and talent.

教育是“引导”还是“领导”?













"Educare" in Latin means "elicit", and it is also the root of the English word "education." This leads to more questions: What is the essence and meaning of education? Is it about "eliciting" or "dominating"?

Educare,在拉丁语中代表“引出”,也是英语中“教育 Education”的来源。这让我们不禁思考,教育的本质和意义究竟是什么?是“引导”还是“领导”?

学生们的回答出奇地一致:在这里感受到的教育是“引导”。

 

Herbert是八年级的新生,原本就读公立学校而现在入读国际化学校,问及在全英环境下学习和适应力的问题,他认为,“环境起到了关键作用,耳濡目染”。从不熟悉到逐渐得心应手,一切发生在不知不觉中。老师的角色也很关键,Herbert同学认为,“老师是一个引导者,不会强制我们按照他的观点来走。与老师之间的关系更多是教学相长、互相学习。“

Juan同学是七年级的新生,他在这里找到了学习数学的乐趣:“以前觉得学数学很无趣,现在感觉做题也变得很有意思。老师设置的解题活动就像密室解密那样。” 通过动手和动脑相结合的教学方式,把数学从书本里拉进了现实。在爱莎荔湾的课堂,教学从学生的学习兴趣为出发点,在培养和强化正确的学习方法的过程中,同时将学习过程与实际生活相互联系,帮助学生探索和发现学习与生活的内在逻辑关系、明确学习的目的和意义,以此激发学生内驱力进行自主探究学习

The students' answers are surprisingly consistent: the education they experience here is "elicit".


Herbert is a new G8 student who originally attended a public school and is now enrolled in ISA Liwan International School. When asked about the challenges of studying and adapting in an immersive English environment, he believes that "the environment plays a crucial role, as we learn through immersion." From being unfamiliar to gradually becoming proficient, it all happens unconsciously. The role of teachers is also pivotal for Herbert. He considers teachers as "facilitators who don't put their ideas to us. The relationship between me and my teachers is more about equity, mutual learning and growth."

Juan, a G7 newcomer, has discovered the joy of learning mathematics here: "I used to find math boring, but now I feel that solving problems has become very intriguing. The problem-solving activities set by the teacher are like deciphering a mystery in an escape room." Through a teaching approach that combines hands-on and intellectual engagement, mathematics is brought out of textbooks and into real-life situations. In ISA Liwan's classrooms, teaching is based on students' interests. In the process of nurturing and reinforcing the effective learning methods, student learning is connected to their real-life experiences. This helps students explore and discover the inherent logic between learning and life, clarify the purpose and significance of learning, and in turn, promotes students’ intrinsic motivation for independent inquiry-based learning.

知识不再是被强制灌输到学生的脑子里,枯燥无味的文字;而是等待他们去寻找和探索的、充满未知的拼图。Jason是十年级的新生,对比之前在公办学校的学习模式,在这里,不再是拼命做笔记,而是“老师会引导你做更多的事,比如查阅资料、做PPT、回答问题等等。”学生在寻找答案的路上收获有自己独特理解的知识,往往更深刻。

 

爱莎荔湾提供的小班制个性化教学也是为了放大国际教育中“引导”的本质。在实施精准教学、精准辅导的同时,提升课堂效率

 

Cecilia是IBDP课程十一年级的创校生,她也在学习中感受到了自主权,老师授课便是主导性交给学生,鼓励学生提出问题、寻找答案和分析利弊。小班教学和个性化辅导也让她的化学成绩稳步提升,她说:“上化学课的话,老师就是一带二,我们可以随时提出问题,随时去找到老师。其实因为人数比较少的原因,老师可以根据我们个人的情况去给予帮助,这样就更有学习效果。”

Knowledge is no longer lifeless texts poured into students' minds. Instead, it's like an unknown puzzle waiting for them to solve. Jason, a G10 newcomer, comparing to his previous learning experience in a public school. Learning in ISA Liwan is no longer about taking notes and rote learning but about ‘autonomy’. "Teachers want you to do more, such as researching, making PowerPoint presentations, and solving problems", Jason said. Through active learning, students acquire knowledge with their own understanding, often leading to a deeper comprehension.


The small-class sizes and personalized teaching methods provided at ISA Liwan aime at amplifying the essence of "elicit" in international education. While implementing precise teaching and tutoring, this approach enhances classroom efficiency.


Cecilia, a G11 founding student of the IBDP program, experiences learner autonomy at ISA Liwan. The teachers take on a facilitating role, encouraging students to ask questions, seek answers, and analyze pros and cons. Small-class sizes and personalized teaching have steadily improved her learning outcomes. "In chemistry class, we're having one teacher for two students. We can ask questions anytime and seek help from the teacher whenever needed. Because of the smaller class size, teachers can provide assistance tailored to our individual needs, which makes learning more effective." Cecilia said.

十年级的创校生Howard是个嘻哈迷,他的嘻哈音乐之旅始于打篮球和跳街舞,在众多特长中毅然走向音乐之路。他对嘻哈音乐痴迷的原因很纯粹——为了改变,他说:“只要深挖饶舌歌手的故事和创作背景,就能看到他们的态度。我希望传达的嘻哈音乐是想让大家能了解一些不公的社会现状,促进改变。”


家长和学校的支持也在滋养着学生一个个小小的梦想,种种支持如柔和的微风,温暖而恒定。Howard同学的梦想是成为这个小众文化的推广者,“我想打破大众对嘻哈音乐的误解,向更多人推广自己的音乐作品。“ 课余,父母也支持Howard同学学习编曲、作曲、写词、说唱…他的自学能力和迎接未知挑战的勇气愈发茁壮。

ISA Liwan is a greenhouse for boosting potential. Each student is a unique individual, and their talents and interests serve as gateways to unleashing their potentials and nurturing multidimensional abilities.


Howard, a G10 founding student, is a hip-hop fan. His journey into hip-hop music began with basketball and street dance, but among many talents, he wholeheartedly embraced the path of music. His passion for hip-hop music is pure. "By delving into the stories and creative backgrounds of rap artists, you can see their attitudes. I hope to convey through hip-hop music a message that helps people understand some of the social injustices and fosters change", He said.


The support from parents and school is nurturing the little dreams of each student. Howard's dream is to become an advocate for this subculture. "I want to break the common misconceptions about hip-hop music and promote my own music to a wider audience." He said. After school, Howard's parents also support his endeavors to learn music composition, songwriting, and rap. His self-learning skills and courage to embrace unknown challenges are thriving.

在这座多元文化的校园,支持不仅体现在课程上,还包括社交方面。校园社团则是学生展现领导力、解决问题能力和社交技巧的舞台。


Howard同学今年在校内建立了说唱社,他说:“建说唱社的目的有一部分是想改变大家对rapper的刻板印象。另一方面是想传播推广嘻哈的文化和态度,先从校园这一小部分人做起,再慢慢影响到大众…希望有一天可以带着我们做出来的音乐走进社会,被大众认识。” 尽管建社过程存在一些困难,Howard同学通过与负责老师的密切合作来解决问题,“老师会在我们之间做协调,但是社团事务主要以我们意见为主。”

 

爱莎荔湾提供包括体育、艺术、人文、科技等超 60 门辅助/拓展CCA课程,在多样的课程框架下,学生的学术发展和个人特色发展都得到全方位的支持。一步一个脚印,走向全人。 八年级的Candy是创校生,自入读以来成绩一直稳步提升,个人兴趣发展也没有落下,“除了学习,平时课余喜欢画画卡通和日本动漫。我爸妈也希望我全面发展,而不是死读书。”

学生的故事代表着学校对全人教育理念的承诺,培养学生的社交领导能力、批判性思维和跨文化融合能力,使他们能够在未来的道路上取得成功。

In this multicultural environment, stakeholder support is not only shown in academics but also in social aspects. Campus clubs provide students with a platform to showcase their leadership, problem-solving abilities, and social skills.

 

Howard, for instance, founded a rap club on campus this year. "The purpose of establishing the rap club is to change people's stereotypical impressions of rappers. Also, it's to spread and promote the culture and attitude of hip-hop. We start with the small community on campus and gradually influence the broader audience...I hope that one day we can introduce the music we create to society and be recognized by the public." Howard said. Despite facing some challenges during the club's formation, Howard collaborates closely with the responsible teacher to address issues. He says, "The teacher wasn’t involved in the club, basically we are the chargers."

 

ISA Liwan offers over 60 CCA courses, including sports, arts, humanities, technology. Within this diverse course framework, students receive comprehensive support for both their academic and personal development. With each step, they move towards becoming holistically developed individuals. Candy, a G8 founding student, has seen steady academic improvement since her enrollment. Her personal interests have also flourished. She says, "Besides studying, I enjoy drawing cartoons and Japanese anime in my spare time. My parents also hope for my holistic development rather than just focusing on academics."

 

Students' stories represent the school's commitment to holistic education philosophy, nurturing students' social leadership skills, critical thinking, and cross-cultural integration abilities, enabling them to achieve success on their future paths.

在广州长大的Jerry同学是爱莎荔湾的创校生,最让他影响深刻的就是在今年七月举办的践行周。这提供了一个半模拟式的社会真实环境,学生在博物馆和自然地质中流连,在探天文、知地理的探究式活动中,与来自不同地区和国家的同学们侃侃而谈,知识不再是书本上的一知半解,而是展现在眼前、印在脑海里的深刻理解。

At ISA Liwan, the learning experience goes beyond merely improving students' academic abilities. It emphasizes the development of their learner autonomy and social skills, which are the stepping stones to overcoming various challenges in international environments.


Jerry, a founding student from Guangzhou, was profoundly impacted by Action Week held in July. This event provided a semi-simulated real-world environment where students roamed through museums and natural landscapes, engaged in inquiry-based activities about astronomy and geography, and conversed with peers from different regions and countries. Knowledge was no longer superficially understood from textbooks but deeply comprehended, manifested before their eyes and imprinted in their minds.

没有社交活动的寄宿生活是没有灵魂的,更多元的社交环境让孩子们在住校中体验“小社会”,成长、成材


Cecilia同学也感受到在爱莎荔湾寄宿生活的丰富多彩。“以前住宿对我来说就是有一张床睡觉,现在住宿还能体验到很多有趣的活动,例如校长晚宴,我可以学习其他国家的文化和餐饮礼仪、跟寄宿老师关系变亲近。“ 除此之外,她还参与了爱莎荔湾宿舍学生会。”我主要是收集学生意见,充当老师和学生之间的桥梁,让双方更加相互理解对方的立场。因为和同龄人之间交流更轻松,同学们会愿意向我倾诉。”

A boarding life without social activities is soulless, and a more diverse social environment allows students to experience a ‘micro-society’ during their boarding life, facilitating personal growth.


Cecilia has also experienced the rich and colorful boarding life at ISA Liwan. "In the past, living in the dormitory was just about having a bed to sleep in. Now, boarding life offers many interesting activities. For example, during the Head of School Dinner, I can learn about the culture and dining etiquette of other countries, and my relationship with the house parents has become closer." She said. In addition, she has become a part of ISA Liwan's Boarding Student Council. "My main role is to collect students' opinions and serve as a bridge between teachers and students, facilitating better mutual understanding of each other's perspectives. Because communication with peers is easier, students are more willing to confide in me." Cecilia said.

来自云南昆明的十年级学生,Sam同学从小就清楚自己有出国的意愿,“昆明那边就是没有好的国际教育资源,所以才选择来广州。刚来广州看荔湾爱莎学校,一眼就爱上了。” 除了校园环境这些外在因素,吸引他的还是升学指导老师的专业和见解。Sam同学的大学升学方向是美国,对于当地的教育资源和选择还比较迷茫的时候,在踏入高中前能得到老师的个性化指导、及早确立目标,也符合了他的择校预期。

第一次住宿,便是7天住宿生,在周末的时候也需要在校生活。这对于新住宿生的适应力和心理健康发展来说,无疑是个巨大的挑战。Sam同学真切地感受到爱莎荔湾的人文心智关怀,这双无形给他带来支撑和支持的手。他说,“老师很好相处,没有架子,就像朋友一样;甚至于连饭好不好吃都是他们会给予关心的地方。” Cecilia同学也说到,“老师给我的感觉不是管理者,是朋友,心情不好我也会跟老师倾诉。“

Sam, a G10 student from Kunming, Yunnan, has always had a clear desire to study abroad. "There are no good international education resources in Kunming, so I chose to come to Guangzhou. When I first saw Liwan ISA School, I fell in love with it instantly." He mentioned. In addition to the school environment and other external factors, what attracted him was the professionalism and understanding of the college counseling teachers. Sam's college aspiration is to study in the United States, and when he was still unsure about the local education resources and choices, receiving personalized guidance from his teachers before entering high school and establishing his goals early on aligned with his expectations for school selection.

 

Living in the dormitory for the first time, Sam, a seven-day boarding student, also needs to stay on campus during weekends. This undoubtedly poses a challenge to his adaptability and mental well-being. Sam genuinely feels the pastoral care provided by ISA Liwan, which offers invisible but essential support. "The house parents are easy to get along with, without any airs, just like friends; they even care about whether the food is good or not." He said. Cecilia also mentioned, "The feeling I get from the house parents is not that of superiors but friends. When I'm not feeling well, I can talk to them."

不强求的背后也是对学生自主自律的培养,Sam同学补充道,“老师不会强求我们要一定在什么时间要去干某件事,都是提醒一下我们,例如写作业、吃饭。” 对于电子产品的使用,学校做到了顺应时代和人性化。Sam同学说,“学校规定每周三用手机就是个挺好的时间点。现在这个时代本身就是个信息化的电子时代,完全禁止也很不合理。” 一味的阻挡学生和世界的连结是不符时代发展的,建立自律的管理意识才是根本

Sam believes that the personal experience and understanding of pastrol care at ISA Liwan can be summarized as ‘not imposing’ and ‘considering students' feelings’.


Behind the policy of not imposing is the cultivation of student autonomy and self-discipline. Sam elaborated, "Teachers don't force us to do things at specific times; they simply remind us, for example, remember to do homework or have proper meals." Regarding the use of electronic devices, the school adapts to the times while being considerate of individual needs. "The school designates Wednesdays as the day when we can use our phones. In this digital age, a complete ban would be unreasonable." Sam explained. Blindly blocking the connection between students and the world is not in line with the development of the times, and the establishment of self-disciplined management awareness is fundamental.
