Our Year 2 students have been immersed in our first Unit of Inquiry (UOI) focused on the theme of 'Who We Are'. During this exploration, we have delved into the central idea of how Culture and geography influence how we communicate with each other. The students have been fascinated by the evolution of communication throughout history and have gained insights into how culture and geography can profoundly influence our means of connecting with one another.

二年级的学生沉浸在 "我们是谁 "为主题的第一个探究单元(UOI)的学习中。在学习过程中,我们深入探究了文化和地理如何影响我们的沟通方式 ,学生们对沟通方式的演变充满好奇并产生了浓厚的兴趣,并由此我们深入了解了文化和地理是如何影响人们沟通的方式。



One particular area of inquiry has captivated our attention— the examination of communication systems across the globe, with a special emphasis on sign language. In our classes, we have embarked on an exciting journey, exploring sign language from different countries. This comparative study has allowed us to learn an array of vocabulary that expands beyond our usual classroom routine. Our students have been actively acquiring skills in British Sign Language, practicing both at home and during interactive sessions with their classmates on the playground and in the classroom. In fact, we even dared to undertake a Math class using only body language and signing. Although it presented challenges, this experience enabled our students to truly grasp the challenges of relying solely on sign language for communication. Additionally, our exploration of colours and the alphabet has empowered our students to finger spell their names—an exciting accomplishment!

We welcomed guest speakers at ISA Tianhe. They shared invaluable insights into how deaf individuals navigate their daily lives such as ordering food and moving through a metro station. Our guest speakers used both sign language and spoken language to communicate with our students, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the experiences of the deaf community. Moreover, our students learned how to sign "Happy Mid-Autumn Festival" using Chinese Sign Language—a cultural connection that further enriched their understanding of different communication systems.

学校邀请了手语演讲嘉宾为学生们分享听力障碍者的日常生活,比如他们如何点餐、如何乘坐地铁。演讲嘉宾用手语和口语与我们的学生交流,加深了学生对听力障碍者群体经历的理解。此外,我们的学生还学会了如何用中文手语比划出 "中秋节快乐 "的手势。这种文化联系进一步丰富了他们对不同交流方式的理解和学习。



As we approach the end of our UOI, our students will start preparing non-chronological reports centered around communication systems worldwide. We are looking forward to reading about all of the information that the students have taken away from this UOI. It is truly a rewarding experience to witness our students' growth and enthusiasm as they explore how culture and geography influence how we communicate with each other.

本次探究单元之旅即将告一段落,学生们将围绕着全球交流方式开展非时序性报告的写作。在写作中,我们期待看到学生们利用探究单元中所学习到的技能。陪伴孩子们一起学习探索文化和地理对沟通方式的影响,见证他们的成长和对知识的热情是一次非常有意义的经历。
