On December 23-24, 2023, the 2023-2024 Future City® National Exhibition and 10th Anniversary Celebration was successfully held at the National Speed Skating Complex in Beijing, with nearly 1,000 future junior engineers from 29 cities across China.
The team from ASJ made a remarkable performance in the 2023-2024 Futurama® National Exhibition. Although it was the first time for them to participate in the City of the Future Exhibition, with the joint efforts of teachers and students, all the participating teams won awards, including one first prize, two second prizes, one third prize and two best paper prizes, among which, the city canvas drawn by students of the middle school group with Guangzhou as the prototype was exhibited in the National Speed Skating Pavilion and has been permanently collected.
At the same time, all the instructors of the competition were also awarded the certificate of excellent instructors.
The City of the Future® program is a globally renowned innovative educational activity for young people, and this year marks the 10th year that the City of the Future® has been held in China. Jointly organized by the National Speedskating Center and the Future City® Organizing Committee, this event adds a unique color to the "Ice Ribbon", a masterpiece of intelligence, technology, green and low-carbon. The Future City® program focuses on developing students' problem solving, teamwork, project management, public presentation, inquiry, and writing skills, all of which are core skills for 21st century talents.
The theme of this year's Future City® program is "Electrifying the Future". Students were asked to research a city and, through bold imagery and hands-on experience, to present solutions for a city that will be completely powered by electricity in 100 years.
There is a growing consensus that the cities of the future could be powered entirely by electricity. So what are the clean, green and renewable energy sources that can power the grid? How can these energy sources provide enough power for industrial, transportation, agricultural, residential and commercial uses? Currently, engineers, scientists, architects, and urban planners are working together so that our cities can run on clean energy sources that have minimal impact on the environment. As engineers find and implement solutions to the challenges of electrifying our cities, can you imagine what the cities of the future will look like?
Annual Challenge Task: Design a city 100 years from now that is entirely powered by electricity, where the source of the city's power needs to ensure the health and safety of its citizens and the environment.
Preparation for Future City®
Facing this event, the students showed great motivation and initiative, tapping their full potential and drawing abundant resources and strong support from various parties in the community (classmates, teachers, school logistics, families and social organizations). Under the guidance of their mentors and with the full support of their families, the students visited the Guangzhou Urban Planning Exhibition Center and the Guangdong Science Center as a family unit, thus gaining a more intuitive understanding of urban planning. They took the initiative to seek recyclable materials from the school's logistics staff to prepare for the implementation of the project. At the same time, they also actively sought advice from other teachers and continued to absorb new knowledge and suggestions.
On the eve of the competition, Audrey Yang, Director of Teaching and Learning at ASJ, organized a teacher-student meeting with the aim of raising the students' awareness of participation and safety, so that they could truly become the protagonists of the competition. At the same time, ICT Director Mr. Tony was invited to conduct the City of the Future guest sharing session in order to give students a better understanding of the competition process.
After months of careful preparation, in-depth research and innovative design, the students not only completed their scientific and rigorous city thesis, but also constructed four excellent works of future cities with the help of recyclable materials in daily life: "The City of Yuelai", "The City of Thousand Jugs of Sand", "The City of Hope", and an extremely creative and humanized design work, "The Starry Vault". These works not only reflect the students' talent and hard work, but also foretell the direction of our beautiful future city development.
In the "Ice Ribbon" event, students from the Hong Kong and Macau Children's School of Guangzhou JIU presented our design concepts for the future city to the public and judges through passionate speeches and creative performances, conveying our vision for environmental protection, technology and the future. These works are not only a display of technology, but also a unique presentation of the future city. Let's enjoy them together!
