Recently, the results of the Australian Mathematical Thinking Challenge 2024 were announced, and our students performed well, with a total of 436 students receiving honours. Among them, 1 National Award of Excellence (top 0.3% of the country), 10 National First Prizes (top 3% of the country), 55 National Second Prizes (top 20% of the country), 128 National Third Prizes (top 55% of the country) and 242 National Mathematical Skills Awards, among other awards!
The Australian Maths Thinking Challenge (AMC) is the internationally recognised Gold Medal Inter-School Maths Thinking Challenge. As the world's largest inter-school mathematical thinking challenge, the AMC is fully sponsored by the Australian Mathematics Trust, which annually selects Australia's national team for the International Mathematical Olympiad, with the aim of enriching the mathematical education of students at all levels by providing access to cutting-edge mathematical ideas, theoretical developments and educational resources. The AMC is clearly graded from A-E, covering students from Year 3 to Year 12. Students of different foundations and grades can find a competition that suits them.
Maths Thinking Development
Good mathematical thinking at this critical stage of development in primary and secondary schools not only enhances students' logical thinking and problem-solving skills, but also lays a solid foundation for their future studies and life. Through systematic mathematical training and competitions, students can learn how to use abstract thinking to understand and analyse complex problems, an ability that is also crucial in solving challenges in daily life.
In the process of AMC preparation, all students actively exercised their mathematical thinking skills and explored exercises including but not limited to number crunching, logical reasoning, mathematical modelling, associative imagination and data analysis. Through this competition, students' thinking in the subject of Mathematics was enhanced and expanded to varying degrees.
Mathematical thinking emphasises logical reasoning, pattern recognition and creative thinking, which are skills that help develop students' critical thinking and creativity. In learning Mathematics, students are required to experiment, test and revise their hypotheses, and this trial-and-error process is beneficial to the development of a resilient learning attitude and the ability to think independently.
