物理学 - 波学

本周G9学生在物理课上迎来了新的章节的学习,波学。作为物理中比较重要的知识点,需要和同学一起定性及定量地分析知识点。


首先,让同学们讨论什么是波,怎么样产生波以及波是怎么传递的。为了让学生们更好地区分横波纵波,课堂上学生们通过轮流“萝卜蹲”模拟人形横波的波浪;再让学生通过轮流左右摆动模拟纵波的传递过程。同学把自己带入式成为波上的某个质点,通过不同的运动方向区分开什么是质点的振动方向,什么是波的能量的传递方向,从而清楚的认识到纵波和横波的不同。






此外,老师还通过竹签,小熊软糖和宽胶带做成一个模拟绳波(横波)传递的模型,让大家在课堂上讨论,从而更好地理解并吸收本周的知识点。对于喜欢思考的同学,也可以试试如果加大竹签间的间距,波的传递速度是否会有改变。

This week, G9 students ushered in a new topic in physics class, waves. 


In the beginning, students discussed what a wave is, how to produce a wave, how a wave is transmitted. In order to fully understand transverse waves, the students modelled the transverse waves themselves by doing the "radish squats" in succession; and then students modelled longitudinal waves as they took turns swinging left and right. Through these motions, students bring themselves into the physics model to become a particle on the wave, which will help them distinguishing between the vibration direction of the particle and the transmission direction of the wave's energy. Therefore, students clearly recognized the difference between the longitudinal wave and the transverse wave. 






In addition, bamboo sticks, bear gummy and wide tape were also used to make a model that simulated the travelling rope waves (transverse waves) for students to discuss. There is also a challenging question for curious students, what will happen to the wave speed if the spacing between the bamboo sticks is increased.

During these two weeks, students in G9 have been learning acids and bases, including their common names, chemical properties, and different reactions with various substances.  In order to better explore their properties, we carried out different experiments, including testing the acidity of daily groceries, such as lemon juice, milk, baking soda and cleaning detergent, exploring the reaction between acid and marble chips, and the colour change during a neutralisation reaction. In the first experiment, they found out the acidity by observing the colour change after adding different pH indicators into the different liquids. In the second experiment, they observed the balloon on the top of the flask as it inflated gradually due to  the carbon dioxide produced in the reaction.

During these experiments, students were divided into groups and learnt to cooperate with their partners. Apart from the knowledge itself, they also learnt the safety rules in lab, how to set up experiment apparatus, observe and record phenomena, and eventually clean up their benches.

地理 - 人口与聚落

本周的地理课学生继续以极大的专注和热情学习本单元的其中一个人文地理主题:人口与聚落。学生们学习到造成人口改变的诸多原因,例如:文化,宗教,经济发展,教育,性别,种族,年龄,政治体系和自然灾害等因素。学生们就这些原因进行了深入的讨论和检视。在学习课本内容之余,学生们还学习到必须以客观和理解的观点去看待问题,而非以带有偏见和个人生活经验的眼光去评论问题。人口改变的发生可能是局部性和短暂性的,但是其所带来的影响却可能是全球性和长远的。


  GEOGRAPHY


在学习内容的过程中学生们还学习了如何搜集资料,将当今的个案和历史上曾经发生过的事件加以比较,综合分析从不同的学科所得到的知识,尝试预测人口改变这个现象在未来的发展,以及将已经拥有的知识有条理地消化和吸收。


学生们不但学习到了如何制作柱状图,表格和使用Flipgrid来制作短视屏以展示所学,同时也和班上的其他同学分享视频并尝试评论他人的作品。学生们兴致高昂地学习使用这个有效,有趣和有用的应用程序来进行学习,分享和互相鼓励学习的成果。在地理课课堂上,我们以21世纪的学习方法来达到学习目标,也使得学习更加有趣和带有主动性。

Students in geography class continue to learn about population change, the second sub-topic of the unit Population and Settlement, with great focus and enthusiasm. They explore the factors and reasons cause population change in the world.  Different cultures, religions, economic development level, education, gender, race, age, political systems and natural disasters are being introduced, discussed and examined. Students learn to examine issues with objectivity and from multiple perspectives without promptly make any conclusions based on personal life experience and bias. Population change can be regional and temporary, but the impact caused by the issue can be global and permanent.


  GEOGRAPHY


Students are developing the skills to collect data, compare what is happening now in the world with a similar case happened in history, synthesize knowledge received from other subjects, predict possible future trend, and organize knowledge systematically. 


Students design charts and create a bar graphs.  Using an effective and fun APP representing 21st century learning methods, they make videos about the topic of population change using Flipgrid which allows teachers and students to report, share and comment visually.
