莱克顿年刊第二期出版 | “培养终身学习的能力”
作为学校年度的代表性杂志，面向所有学生、家长、意向家长、莱克顿校友及那些对学校感兴趣的人。它也是记录时间的档案，将过去一年学校里发生的故事、举行的活动，和体现了莱克顿精神文化、教育理念的内容都撰写成文，一一记录并展示给读者。上海莱克顿学校创校的第二年是充满挑战、载满希望的一年；也是不负期望，硕果累累的一年。在此，学校非常欣喜的向大家分享：莱克顿年刊The Luctonian 2019/2020 正式发布！

The Luctonian Magazine is the School's most prestigious magazine and is intended for students, parents, prospective parents, Old Luctonians, friends and those who have a particular interest in the School. The Magazine also has an important role as an archive. It takes account of the School's stories and activities in the preceding academic year as well as reflecting the spirit, culture and educational philosophy of Lucton. This is the second year of Lucton School Shanghai, which is full of challenges, achievements and expectations. We would like to share the second issue of The Luctonian Magazine 2019/2020 with everyone!
在创作第二期年刊期间，全世界都经历了疫情的侵袭。在这次考验中，莱克顿人展现出了强大的毅力和百折不屈的精神。学校决定采用线上教学形式，停课不停学；老师们身在国外有着种种不便，仍然坚持为学生们上课；学生们在考试取消，不能开学等种种压力下仍保持乐观、相互鼓励。这些无一不彰显了莱克顿人的精神。当逆境来袭，莱克顿人便迸发出惊人的力量，一同迎击挑战，凯旋而归。本期年刊便以“逆境中迸发的力量”为主题，记录了莱克顿这一年的成长，而莱克顿人在疫情期间的“力量”在故事里，更是留下了浓墨重彩的一笔，尤其是在学术领域。

The second issue of The Luctonian Magazine was created during the COVID-19. This is a special time that all Luctonians demonstrated their strength and indomitable spirit. In such a severe challenge, the school promptly decided to adopt online lessons, with teachers insisting on teaching even when they were abroad. Although the exams were cancelled and the school closed, the students still kept an optimistic attitude and encouraged each other. The Luctonians have shown incredible power and have risen to the challenge together in the face of adversity. "Power ON" is the theme of this magazine, and a large part of it records the growth and power of Luctonians, especially in the academic life.
在疫情期间，隔离对学校和学生们来说都是一次不小的挑战。对于莱克顿学术部来说，需要专注于如何开展线上课程、保证教学质量；而对于学生们而言，这也是一次践行自主学习的机会。莱克顿学术副校长Clem Parrish先生为帮助、支持学生，写下了一篇关于如何成为拥有自主学习能力者的文章——《终身学习的能力》，并被收录进莱克顿年刊。

Quarantine is a challenge for both school and students during the epidemic. Academic team need to focus on developing online lessons and ensuring the quality of teaching, while students need to exercise their ability to learn independently. In order to help and support students, Mr Clem Parrish, Deputy Head of Academic, wrote an article, Independent Learning, which was published in The Luctonian Magazine.

The ability to learn through self-teaching, is the most important educational skill children can acquire. When students attend university in the UK or US, all of their professors will expect them to have independent learning skills and as adults we need them every day to acquire new knowledge to solve the problems that arise in everyday work or life. At Lucton we believe that students do not acquire these skills naturally or through magic, we believe that students must be taught how to teach themselves and the following is a summary of what we believe are the most important elements of successful independent learning:
要成为一个成功的自主学习者，学生们需要有积极性、勤奋并努力，但最重要的是，他们必须相信，如果自己努力学习，运用聪明的方法，就可以提高成功率。自主学习并非易事，学生不能轻言放弃，必须在艰难的时期也坚持到底，无论问题或概念多么晦涩难懂，都要有信心，相信自己能通过自主学习获取知识，我们称此为成长心态（Growth Mindset）。我们一向鼓励学生要有雄心壮志，在所有的课堂和学校的日常生活里都以这种方式思考。当学生轻易放弃，不相信自己通过努力可以学有所成时，我们称此为固定心态（Fixed Mindset）。

To be a successful independent learner, children must be motivated, diligent and hardworking but crucially they must also believe that they can and improve be successful if they work hard and work smart. Independent is not easy and students must not give up easily the must persevere through difficult times and be resilient believing in themselves and their ability to learn no matter how hard the problem or concept is. We call this Growth Mindset, and we encourage our students to be ambitious and think this way in all our lessons and through our daily life in school. When students give up easily and don’t believe they can improve through hard work we call this Fixed Mindset.
成功从来不是一蹴而就的，与其称赞一个人优秀的成绩，不如夸奖他坚持不懈的过程，我们认为这点很重要。
在学生努力的时候，我们一定会表扬他，哪怕他做的不够好，甚至犯错了。当他们能够证明，自己已经从过去的错误中吸取教训时，我们会进一步的表扬他们。
努力和坚持能够帮助一个学生取得巨大的进步，无论他们起点如何。学生在自主学习的过程中，方方面面都值得表扬，但是我们更注重表扬学生在其最终成果上所做的努力，这才是真正地强化了努力的重要性。
在这样的环境中，当学生们遇到困难时，他们更愿意继续尝试，他们也会相信，只要付出足够的努力，无论面对什么样的困境，他们都能有所进步。

Success does not always come instantly so rather than praise excellent results we believe praising persistence not results is important.
We are sure to praise students for trying even when they make mistakes and praise them further when they demonstrate that they have learnt from what they have done wrong in the past.
Effort and persistence can help any student to make great progress regardless of their starting point. While it is important to praise any examples of independent work, we really reinforce the importance of trying hard by praising the effort that a student makes above the final product of their work.
As a result, students will be more likely to keep trying when they encounter difficulties. They will also believe that with enough effort they can always make progress, no matter what they are faced with.
Environment and Organisation
很明显，对于学生们来说，有一个舒适的学习环境、桌椅以及他们学习所需的所有设备和资源是很重要的。而同样重要的是，他们要有明确的任务、目标。例如：在线课程的完成时间表、计划阅读的书籍、有截止日期的作业或课业任务。为了能够有效率的并按时的完成学习任务，学生要避免分心，例如玩电子游戏，而是要认真规划自己的工作并坚持下去。对于疫情期间每天都在参加长时间在线课程的学生们来说，这一点很重要。

It is obviously important that students have a comfortable place to work, comfortable desk and chair and all the equipment and resources they need to do their work. It is equally important that they have obvious things like their timetable of online lessons, books and that the stick to deadlines set for homework and assignments. To be able to meet deadlines effectively students need to avoid distractions such as playing video games, plan their work carefully and stick to their plans. This is all particularly important for students who are trying to remain engaged with online lessons for many hours every day.
虽然我们一向鼓励学生发展独立学习的能力，但我们往往会注意到：提问多的学生总是能够取得更好的成绩。独立学习并不意味着不向老师或朋友寻求帮助，正相反，这是解决学习问题的有效途径。因此，我们鼓励学生找出自己最薄弱的环节或是他们没有理解的课题，如果他们努力去学习这些内容却仍然不得要领，就应该寻求帮助。在课堂内外时，提出问题对于学生的学习至关重要。经过了疫情阶段，我们已采用了钉钉这个软件辅助教学，学生可以在有需要的时候向老师提问或留言，当然他们需要按照提前商议好的时间与老师沟通，因为要尊重老师的休息时间。

While we want to encourage students' independent learning skills to develop, it is a general rule that the students who ask the most questions achieve the highest grades. So independent learning doesn't mean not asking your teacher or friends for help, this can often be the most efficient way to overcome a learning problem. So we really encourage all our students to identify their weak areas or topics they don't understand and if they have tried hard to understand work but still have problems, they should ask for help. In and out of lessons, asking questions is critical to students' success, now we have transferred to Ding talk students can message their teachers for help whenever necessary, but we do ask that they stick to the agreed times as teachers need their rest too!
让学生在课前做准备是非常重要的，我们会要求他们观看视频或回顾上一节课的笔记，这样他们才能做好准备学习新的知识，当然这需要足够的自律能力，如果学生有追求学术卓越的目标，他们就应当明白预习的重要性。

It is really important that students do an appropriate amount of preparation before their lessons, they might be asked to watch a video or review their notes from a previous lesson so they come to the lesson ready to learn new material. This of course requires self-discipline but if students are ambitious they must learn the importance of preparation.
Note Taking and Linking Ideas
我们教会学生使用康奈尔笔记系统创建自己的学习笔记。记笔记是整理学习信息的一种重要方法，通过有效的笔记来学习可以比复习学到更多的东西。
在记笔记时，请遵循以下步骤：
1. 仔细阅读资料，注重关键词汇。

We teach our students to create their own notes using the Cornell notes system. Note taking is a really important way of learning information. You learn more by making the notes, if you do effectively than you do by reviewing them.
When I make notes I follow the following steps:
Read though the material carefully. Pay attention to the vocabulary.
Read though the material again particularly the parts I found difficult.
Delete all the non-important parts of the information.
Reduce the information to the essential concepts and key ideas using the Cornell method.
Linking key ideas and concepts together is critical if students are to gain a deep understanding of whichever subject they are learning and of course writing notes is not the only way for students to record and remember information. Diagrams and drawings such as mind maps or concept maps to help us retain information in our long term memory and link ideas together.
最后一点，我们不应该畏惧科技，尽管有人确实预测过，机器人和人工智能有可能在未来20年取代教师，这也着实让我有些害怕。

Finally, we should not be afraid of technology, although some people do predict that robots and Artificial Intelligence will replace teachers in the next twenty years so I am a bit scared!!
There are many useful apps, websites and other online resources that students can use to help them learn. Many of our students and teachers use Quizlet, it’s a really useful app for learning vocabulary and many of our students use it to create their own notes and vocabulary lists, I use it to try to learn Chinese!
Becoming a successful independent learner does not happen overnight, it takes sustained effort and practice and it takes trial and error to find the methods which best suit your individual learning style. But at Lucton we push all our students to find their path and master the methods which will help them prepare for exams, help them prepare for university and make them excellent lifelong learners who take pleasure in their learning. I am sure that, equipped with all these skills, our Lucton students will be very successful!
