Starting in August 2022, LEH International School Foshan Prep School will be open and welcome to students of Year 4 – 6 (aged 8 – 10), extending our top-quality British Curriculum to younger students and preparing them for Secondary school.

An Experienced Leader

Ms Bateman has 25 years of experience as an educator and leader in both British and international schools in the UK, Portugal, and Egypt. Her journey in education has been wide-ranging. In 2009 she established herself as a leader when she became a founding Headteacher of an independent school in the UK.

Working at LEH Foshan will be her 3rd Headship of an international Prep School and since her appointment, Ms Bateman has been working very closely with Jane Arden, our Headteacher of LEH Foshan to ensure that we recruit the best qualified staff for the Prep school.

Ms Bateman with her husband, has raised 4 children and fostered over 70 children from all over the world. This experience gives her a deep understanding of cultural expectations, which in return benefits her role as an international school leader.

In the Prep School, the curriculum offers our students a wide range of learning experiences taught by class, as well as subject specialists in Computer Science, Spanish, Mandarin, PE and Music. What is Thematic Approach?

The Thematic Approach is a way of teaching and learning, whereby many areas of the curriculum are connected and integrated within a theme. It allows learning to be more natural and less fragmented.

It also helps combine lessons giving more time to specialist subjects, although these can also be involved into the thematic approach with careful planning and preparation. Thematic teaching starts with the identification of a theme the underlying concept that allows for the structure and organisation of specific content across disciplines. It helps learners see meaningful connections across disciplines or learning areas.

Thematic activities offer opportunities for children to use their skills and intellects to bring together different facts, to research and explore, and to achieve goals. Examples of some thematic activities include learning about the local environment.

Year 6 students had been on a field trip to the Nanfeng and Shiwan Ceramics Museum.

Thematic Teaching

Thematic instruction integrates basic disciplines like reading, math, and science with the exploration of a broad subject, such as communities, rain forests, river basins, the use of energy, and so on.

Year 6 students made coral sculptures in their ‘Under the Sea’ art project which created awareness of the impact of climate change and pollution on our environment and ecosystem and linked to their studies in Science, Geography and History.

Vygotsky (1997, 175) suggested that social interaction and collaboration were powerful sources of transformation in the child's thinking. Thematic Approach is the process of integrating and linking multiple elements of a curriculum in an ongoing exploration of many distinct aspects of a topic or subject.

The importance of knowing how to communicate and understanding English for education and business is a high priority and expanding need in the global community. Second only to Mandarin Chinese, English is the most spoken language in the world. That is why a lot of non-native English speakers become English language learners (ELL). We have specialist trained ELL teachers who will help support our learners to become fluent in English. We have fully trained staff who will be supporting alongside the teachers to ensure a proficient level of language is achieved.

Students will also benefit from the customised Language Acquisition Plan (LAP) written by Mrs Jones, our Head of Learning Support, which is shared with all the class teachers of the student, so teachers know how to support the child in each area of their English development.

Another support programme is called the ‘Passport to Oracy’ devised by Mrs Jane Arden, our Headteacher, a well-experienced English teacher. Each passport is carefully crafted to build understanding and fluency in speaking English.

Pathway to Secondary School

In the Prep School we will support all students within the 14 subjects studied to give them a broad and balanced education, so that when they choose their IGCSEs at the age of 14 they have a deeper understanding of the subject content. Everything we do in the Prep School is preparing your child for their Secondary journey. We will offer support and guidance through years 4,5 and 6 ready for their transition to Secondary at LEH Foshan.

We teach to the child not from a textbook every lesson is individually differentiated to the student we have in front of us. The English national curriculum is developed around building critical thinkers who can adapt to the 21st century. We are growing children’s understanding to be broad and balanced for a world that actually doesn’t exist yet, especially jobs and careers that are not yet thought of.

It is also important to allow students to have a say in their learning process. Students who are allowed to have a say in their own learning experience develop essential skills such as self-advocacy. When given the chance to take part in goal setting within the classroom, students are also more motivated to reach those goals. Each individual child in our school learns at a different pace. Each one has needs and interests that are specific to their unique learning style. Implementing a customized learning programme gives all of them the ability to learn at their own pace, and in the way that is best for them.

Lady Eleanor Holles (LEH) International School Foshan is now accepting applications from Year 4 to Year 13 (age 8-18) for the 2022-2023 Academic Year starting in August 2022. We encourage interested families to submit their children’s application as early as possible as placed are limited for certain year levels.
