At LEH International School Foshan, our goal is to prepare students to leave school as well-rounded, confident and intellectually curious young adults. Part of this journey is to ensure they are well prepared for the university or college of their choice.
As a British international school, we follow the globally-recognised British education system and offer the prestigious A Level Qualifications to our Sixth Form students. They are taught by our experienced secondary teachers many of whom have worked as sixth form tutors before and have rich experience in guiding and supporting students into their preferred universities.
Apart from academic learning and support in A Level Curriculum, students also benefit from a structured career programme and university guidance and counseling team throughout their secondary school journey. In this article we invite Mrs Debbie Kirk, Head of Sixth Form to share more information with you.
Mrs Kirk joined LEH Foshan as the Founding Head of Mathematics Faculty. She graduated from the University of Exeter with a Mathematics degree and since then, Mrs Kirk has taught Maths for over 30 years around the world in top international schools, including in Bogota (Colombia), Barcelona, Dubai, and Bangkok. Before joining LEH Foshan she was teaching in the UK where she was not only teaching Maths, but also enjoyed the role of Sixth Form Tutor supporting pre-university preparation as well as being an A Level Examiner.
When advising our undergraduates on course choice, LEH Foshan takes the individual and gradually using academic results, interviews, personal interests, skills and aptitudes builds up a picture which leads to a shortlist of possible university choices.
When asked about how to find the reliable source of information of universities and the application process, Mrs Kirk comments, “Attending a university fair is an opportunity to get a better idea of what university admissions officers are looking for – and a chance to start impressing them by students showing they have the right qualities. Among the university representatives, commonly they agree they are looking for students who demonstrate determination, passion and focus.”
To allow students and parents to meet the wide range of higher education institutions we work with and improving our knowledge of the wide variety of courses and options available, LEH Foshan will organise its first University Fair on 21st October 2022 (Friday). It will be a fantastic opportunity to provide students with information on higher education destinations and to meet in person and talk to the admissions staff of prestigious and well-established colleges and universities. The event is open to the public. All interested families are welcome to apply.
At LEH Foshan students in Year 12 take lessons to prepare for the IELTS examination. Mr Richards, Second in English Department, has years of experience teaching IELTS and specialises in helping students to maximise their score. He has developed his own programme that is proven to raise performance in the writing and speaking divs – the two areas that students struggle with the most. This course will help our students to gain access to world-class opportunities.
What makes a student candidate stand out? Mrs Kirk believes that achieving A level grades is only part of the picture that makes a suitable candidate for top universities. “The idea of an independent learner is at the very heart of the British curriculum and is something that is encouraged in lessons and activities, and as part of the soft skill learning at LEH Foshan. The breadth of experiences and interests, hobbies, and achievements in sport, in music, in the arts, in technology are all invaluable and will make the students are far more attractive candidate for top universities around the globe.”
At LEH Foshan, 2 hours each day are dedicated for the Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs)programme to enhance the academic curriculum. For Sixth Form Students, the programme is designed not only to encourage confidence and leadership, but also develop transferable skills crucial for university and future careers.
As a UCAS registered centre, LEH Foshan helps our students successfully complete the entire application process and has unique access to the students’ applications from their submission to their acceptance by higher education institutions in Great Britain.
Sixth Form students at LEH Foshan also benefit from the connections between the school and the universities. Throughout the year, there will be events like University Fair and University Information Sessions, where the school invites admissions representatives from world-leading universities to introduce their universities to our students and families.
On Friday 21st October 2022, LEH Foshan will hold its first University Fair event and it is open to public. If you are interested!
