World Science Day|国际科学日:一场关于科学的视觉盛宴如何激发学生的好奇心?

每年的11月10日是主张“和平与发展”的国际科学日,它着重强调科学在社会中的重要地位,以及突出带领更多公众参与新出现的科学问题讨论的必要性和在日常生活中的关键性和相关性。


通过将科学与社会更紧密地关联,国际科学日旨在确保公民可以随时了解科学的发展。此外,它还强调了科学家在扩大我们对地球的认知和让我们的社会得到更可持续发展的领域所发挥着关键作用。


Celebrated every 10 November, World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. It also recognizes the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives.


By linking science more closely with society, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that everyone is kept informed of developments in science. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of our planet and in making our societies more sustainable.



为了庆祝国际科学日,MYP中学生为学校社区成员带来了一场主题为“火、土、水、风”的科学表演秀。他们将各式各样的科学实验搬上舞台,为大家上演了别开生面的科学启蒙秀!


In celebration of World Science Day, our MYP students brought an inspiring and fantastic performance to honor the importance of science and all its contributions to our society. The variety of science experiments on stage kept mouths agape.




火与光  Fire and Light


“光”乃万物能量之源。通过植物光合作用吸收后,光会转化成化学能量存储在植物体内,并通过食物链传给世间万物。在科学表演秀上,八年级学生为我们展示了火焰产生的过程。


Light is the energy of all creatures. After being absorbed by plants through photosynthesis, light is converted into chemical energy and stored in plants, which is transmitted to everything in the world through the food chain. In the science show, our MYP3 students take center stage to show us how fire is created.




事实上,火焰远不止一种颜色。在随后的表演中,小小科学家们带来了精彩的实验——运用了一种“魔法”材料让火焰绽放出各式各样的色彩。


In fact, fire has more than one hue. Utilizing a "magical" ingredient, flame blossomed in different hues!




你可曾见过“蓝精灵”?这种神秘的液体被学生“召唤”出来,创造出一种散发着蓝色荧光的物质,让我们仿佛置身于宇宙中央。


Have you ever seen Smurfs? These mysterious liquids are being summoned by our students to produce a material that exhibits blue fluorescence and gives us the impression that we were in the center of the universe.





一个高强度玻璃球为何能通过手的触碰而产生神秘电流从而光芒四射?正在进行中的静电球实验为我们揭秘了静电球的工作原理!


How can a high-strength glass ball shine brightly? Is it generated by a mysterious electric flow through hand-touching? The plasma ball experiment reveals the secret!






冰与水  Ice and Water


如果有一种气体可以让你的音色发生改变,你会愿意尝试吗?这一奇妙的氦气变声体验引来了现场观众的积极响应。


If there was a gas that could make your voice change, would you be willing to have a try? The audience responded favorably to this amazing experience - Helium Voice.





牙膏可以有多大的威力?当它的体积变大无数倍时,它会呈现出什么模样?在这个名为“大象牙膏”的科学实验中,学生简单地采用了几种化学物质,就创造出了一座“泡沫火山”


How powerful is toothpaste aside from driving away cavities? When it's countless times larger, what will be the result? The Elephant's Toothpaste experiment creates a "volcano of foam"!





相信大家对干冰并不陌生,利用它还可以做出很多有意思的实验,让我们一起享受这场视觉盛宴吧!


We assume you are familiar with dry ice. Actually, there are many fascinating experiments you can do with dry ice. Let's all take in this visual feast together!





科学实践不仅存在于舞台中央,还可以存在于人人可及的学习空间中。在精彩的科学表演秀结束后,不同年级的学生都有机会通过亲身实践来了解科学的运作。


After the captivating scientific performances, students from different grade levels have the opportunity to learn about science through hands-on experience.



TWIS的科学教学团队为社区成员准备了丰富多彩的科学实验,包括水果钢琴、投石机、制作彩虹、创造果冻和制造“史莱姆”等实验。让每一位学生都能够从科学实验中发展好奇心和动手能力。


Our Science Department has prepared a variety of science activities for community members, including Fruit Piano, Playing Volleyball with Machines, Rainbow Dreams, Making Jelly and Making Slime, which enables each student to develop their curiosity and hands-on skills through science experiments.



除了校内的科学实验和活动外,TWIS也一直寻找各种方式帮助学生建立科学与现实生活的联结。最近,MYP中学五年级学生正在学习化学键和热化学,他们正在对巨型共价结构如钻石、二氧化硅和石墨烯等进行深度探究。作为MYP科学学习标准类别D的总结性评估的一部分,学生将运用批判性思维来衡量石墨烯的发展过程并且分析其各种影响。


TWIS is continually seeking ways to support our students in making links between science and everyday life in addition to on-campus scientific activities. MYP 5 students are inquiring into chemical bonding and thermochemistry in which they are researching the structure of giant covalent lattices, such as diamond, silicon dioxide, and graphene. As part of the summative assessment of MYP Science criterion D (Reflecting on the Impacts of science), students use critical thinking skills to evaluate the development of graphene and analyze the various implications. 


什么是石墨烯?

What is Graphene?

石墨烯是石墨的基本组成单元,是由碳原子组成六角型呈蜂巢晶格的平面薄膜。同时,它被认为是”未来的材料”。“石墨烯”一词创于1962年;盖姆和诺沃肖洛夫因石墨烯的实验在2010年被授予诺贝尔物理学奖。它拥有最轻和最强的材料的特性,这意味着它在未来能被大量地运用,如水的超滤、复合材料、光伏电池和能源储存等。 


Graphene is the building block of graphite, a layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice. It is the thinnest material known to man. It is also considered ‘the material of the future’. The experimental discovery of graphene was in 1962 and Geim and Novoselove were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their experiments with graphene in 2010. Its amazing properties as the lightest and strongest material, means that it has loads of applications in the future: Ultrafiltration of water; Composite Materials; Photovoltaic Cells; Energy Storage. 

   

为了帮助学生对石墨烯做进一步的探究,我们带领学生前往了一家位于松山湖园区的高新技术公司。这家公司的石墨烯材料主要被用于石墨烯锂电池电极材料、石墨烯复合散热材料、石墨烯显示触摸屏和石墨烯晶体管等。在研学的过程中,学生发现了现代石墨烯的生产方法——哈默法,以及了解到如何检测石墨烯的数量、层的大小、厚度、官能团的含量和层的完整性。得益于高新科技园区的环境,学生可以尽情地在松山湖探究各项高新技术,将现实中的科学融入至课堂知识中。


Further investigation on graphene brought our students to one of the high-tech companies in Songshan Lake. What the company's manufacturing is being used for graphene lithium battery electrode material, graphene composite heat dissipation material, graphene display touch screen, and graphene transistors, among others. Students discovered the modern method of production of graphene - Hummer’s method; the quantity-testing of graphene - the size of the layer, the thickness, the content of the functional group, and the integrity of the layer. Songshan Lake is indeed a convenient place to learn about current advances in technology.
