"What does a musical look like to you?"

Mr. Zhao Qian, Producer of the Chinese version

of the musical Anna Karenina

asked the students this question

last Thursday at the Harrow Zhuhai Master Class

Harrow Zhuhai welcomed the

third Master Class last Thursday

The school was fortunate to invite

the production team of Anna Karenina

the Chinese version of the musical

that is currently touring the country

Mr. Zhao Qian, the executive producer

Ms. Lu Qi, the production manager

Mr. He Shan, the theatre director

and Ms. Li Songnan,

the executive director of the tour

as guest lecturers for the third

 session of the Master Class

The four masters came to the school and

led Harrow students to explore the

mysteries of musicals

Dr. Max Caruso,

Head Master of Harrow Zhuhai

Anna Karenina, by Leo Tolstoy, first published in book form in 1878 as always great works such as these allow us to reflect and to contemplate how they may affect is in modern times. Tolstoy is accredited to have said, “Art is not a handicraft… it is a transmission of feeling that the artist has experienced.” Over a century after publication, the cast of the Chinese version of Anna Karenina came to Harrow Zhuhai to give the students a rare opportunity to interpret this great work from a musical perspective, allowing them to learn from the masters up close and to recreate their imagination.

Appreciation of the Art

Anna Karenina has endured through the centuries and has been brought to the art stage time and time again. The Chinese version of Anna Karenina is the first time that a Russian national treasure is introduced into China, and through the Chinese translation, it has been widely acclaimed for its original poetic music that awakens the soul. The Chinese team used it to carry out an appreciation of the art of musical for the students of Harrow Zhuhai.

Mr. Zhao Qian, the executive producer of Anna Karenina, shared that the musical consists of music performance, drama, and dancing performance, and of course choreography and staging. The birth of the musical was in the 20th century, and the foundation of it was laid by The Show Boat, which was staged on Broadway in the US in 1927 and the musical has taken shape ever since.

Mr. Zhao Qian(Middle)

Mr. Zhao said that American Broadway musicals are mostly based on song and dance to set the story, while the British West End ones are mainly oratorios, with themes more relevant to the public. The Chinese version of Anna Karenina, with its music, choreography, and scenes, restores the essence of the classical Russian version, only in a different language, which is unique and a first timer in China. The students listened intently and gradually became more and more entertained.

Tips for Enjoying Musicals

Ms. Lv Qi, Production Manager of Anna Karenina, also introduced to our students how to enjoy musicals. She suggested that students could start with the elements of a musical, including music, plot, costumes, styling, stage sets, lighting and so on.

Ms. Lv Qi (Middle)

Taking Anna Karenina as an example, she introduced the musical with over 40 pieces of music covering pop, classical and Russian folk ditties, etc.; the dances include ballet, folk dance, modern dance and court dance, etc., using body language to convey emotions.

She then showed visual elements such as lighting and choreography to give students a visual sense of the atmosphere of the musical, such as the cogs on stage creating the rolling of the train and a metaphor for where life should go. Other teachers also opened the door to the unknown for the students by telling the story of Anna Karenina, both on stage and behind the scenes.

Ms. Li Songnan(Middle)

When it came to the interactive session, students Harrow Zhuhai actively spoke up and enthusiastically expressed their thoughts on their own unique understanding of what the musical is. Some students also took the opportunity to ask questions about performing and drama to the masters.

The big train props in the musical look very realistic. Can they be recycled when they are finished?

The main scene of Anna Karenina is in a train station, so we made more than one locomotive prop that can not only be moved around the stage but can also be recycled when it's finished and assembled for use on the next tour.

Ms. Lv Qi

Dimon G2

The set of the musical is very grand. Does it require a lot of help to complete?

The construction of the scenes requires very careful design and a lot of people behind the scenes; however, we also arrange very cleverly in the musical, for example, the same actor may play different background roles in different scenes.

Mr. Li Songnan

Jasper G9

I've been studying Shakespeare recently and I always feel stiff when performing monologues. How can I make them more vivid?

The basic skills of an actor are very important. Monologues require you to understand the character and the background of the story, and you need to read more and improve your literary skills in order to fully understand and interpret the work. Also, you need to be more confident and believe that you are the character.

Mr. Zhao Qian

Drama Course by the Masters

After the sharing session, the masters and the students went to the school’s professional Black Box Theatre for a musical practice session, where the students were led and guided by the masters to experience first-hand the charm of professional acting.

Ms. Songnan Li led the students who were enthusiastic about the musical to perceive the rhythm of the music. Accompanied by the live piano, the students observed, imitated and gradually got into the mood.

After experiencing the concentration of drama, the drama director, Mr. Shan He, next asked the students to exercise the perception of body language by closing their eyes and imagining that they were a seed, using their bodies to present the state of breaking ground, sprouting, branching, in the wind or rain.

Harrow Zhuhai students performed obliviously, taking in the tricks of the trade taught by the masters in role play, mobilizing their bodies, unleashing their imaginations and entering the world of performance completely.

Drama  Harrow Zhuhai

Ms. Helen Bowen

Head of Upper School

Drama is a subject that helps students explore themselves and can explore their creativity in a wonderful way, enabling children to learn to empathise with characters and scenes, to put themselves in their place and to think differently. Besides specialist drama classes, drama will also be taught as part of other subjects, for example in English lessons teachers will take the form of role play to reinforce learning. We will also continue to hold regular school-wide drama productions to give students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the characters and explore their actions and voice tones in depth.

Mr. Zhao Qian

Producer of the Chinese

 version of Anna Karenina

It is very rare for Harrow students to be exposed to acting at such a young age. Next, I think students should focus more on basic training, because no matter what level of career you reach, the basic skills are with the actor for life. Acting requires students to focus on their inner being, to divert their focus from the form, but to create a living and breathing character from the inside.
