From Kindergarten to Primary is not that simple.

The transition from kindergarten to primary school is

a major learning transition for children.

Making the right choices will affect your child's

 long-term personal and academic development.

Many parents already have

their own complex factors to consider when choosing a primary school, such as

the quality of teachers,

hardware and proximity.

But do these points really matter?

What are the different views from

an educators' perspective?

In this issue of

Harrow Educator's Tips

we have interviewed four veteran early childhood and primary education experts, reviewed a large amount of cutting-edge educational materials,

and summarized the 5+6 points for

parents who are still concerning over choosing a school.

Reminder: this article is more applicable to parents who are about to choose the internationalized education route, but it can also serve as a reference for families who wish to choose the public system.

5 Basic Elements

Choosing the right school is crucial to your child's development. Often, looking beyond the hard indicators of distance and price, to closely examine five basic elements of a school can help you understand a school more comprehensively:

0

1

Curriculum and Teaching Approach

Choose a primary school that has a curriculum and teaching approach that aligns with your child's learning style and interests is of great importance. Different schools may have different approaches to learning. Some schools may focus more on traditional academic subjects, while others may prioritize hands-on, project-based learning. How would you want your children to grow will help you make this decision.

0

2

Quality of Teachers

The quality of teachers is a critical factor in determining the quality of education your child will receive. You should look for a school with experienced and well-trained teachers. These teachers should have received professional training and should hold qualified teacher status. They should also be passionate about teaching and committed to helping their students succeed.

0

3

Class Size and Student-Teacher Ratio

Smaller class sizes and a low student-teacher ratio can provide more individualized attention and support for your child. Apart from the normal classes, it is also a factor to consider whether the child will be able to have other organizations and belongings at school and receive extra care.

0

4

School Environment and Culture

The school environment and culture can have a significant impact on your child's social and emotional development. A school that fosters a positive, inclusive and supportive culture tends to be more attentive to the individual development of children and provides support for their holistic development. Whether a school has values that match your expectations is also a factor to consider.

0

5

Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities such as sports, music, and art can play a crucial role in your child's long-term development and help them explore their interests and talents. A school that offers a range of extracurricular activities that match your child's interests can often lead to a love of learning and school life.

6 Developmental Elements

In addition to the five directly observable factors mentioned above, we recommend that parents further consider six more specific developmental factors. These factors are drawn from a range of leading educational research and can help parents to make optimal school choices that are better suited to their child's ongoing development:

01

Look for a School that Values

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

Research has shown that SEL is crucial for children's academic success and overall well-being. Schools that prioritize SEL skills such as self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills, can significantly help children develop good communication and social skills at an early age, as well as enhance their self-awareness and foster leadership skills in the long run.

02

Consider the Quality of

 Home-School Communication

Research has shown that regular and effective communication between parents and teachers can improve children's academic performance and behavior. Schools that values parent-teacher communication and have clear channels for communication tend to use effective home-school bridges to help students develop throughout their learning cycle.

03

Prioritize Schools that Use

Evidence-Based Teaching Practices

Evidence-based teaching practices such as direct instruction, scaffolding, and differentiation have been shown to improve student outcomes. A school that uses these practices and emphasizes the importance of research-based teaching methods is more likely to provide your children with validated academic support.

04

Pay Attention to the

School's Approach to Assessment

Assessment is an important part of education, but it should be done in a way that is meaningful and constructive for students. A school that values formative assessment can provide feedback to students that helps them improve their learning through a reasonable exam system.

05

Consider the School's

Approach to Technology

Technology is becoming increasingly important in education, but it should be used in a way that enhances learning rather than replacing it. Parents are suggested to look for a school that uses technology in a way that supports student learning and is grounded in research-based practices.

06

Look for a School that

Values Diversity and Inclusivity

Research has shown that diversity and inclusivity are important for children's social and emotional development and academic success. A school that values diversity and has policies in place to support inclusivity for all students can implement rules that are fair and transparent, and safeguard the student’s wellbeing and holistic development.

Comments from Experts

Ms. Grace Xu

Principle of Mangrove

 Bay Kindergarten

As the saying goes, "Early childhood nurtures character, childhood nurtures integrity, adolescence nurtures ambition and adulthood nurtures virtue". I think a good school should focus on cultivating students to be good character and virtuous, to treat people with sincerity, to be grateful for life and to be unafraid of challenges.

Ms. Candice Yuen

International Principle of Zhongshan Kingston Kindergarten Education Centre

To choose the right primary school for your child, align values with goals, research reputation and facilities, evaluate teacher-student ratio and diversity, assess location and safety, check for support services and involve your child in the decision-making process. Trust your instincts when making the final choice.

Ms. Nikki Street

Foreign Principle of Harrow Little

Lions Kindergarten Zhuhai

When thinking about a primary education for your children, it’s extremely important to make sure that your family educational values fit with those of the school you are applying to. Children thrive when they are surrounded by role models who have the same expectations for them.

Mr.  Jack Benstead

Head of Lower School,

AISL Harrow Zhuhai

As you consider enrolling your child in a primary school, it's important to recognize the critical role that this decision will play in your child's educational journey. Early years education serves as the foundation for your child's learning experience, and often sets the tone for their future success.

Through the analysis and interpretation of education experts, we believe that as a parent who is concerned about your child's education transition, you should have a more systematic and rich consideration when choosing a primary school.
