——Alan Zhang G2

——Lisa Wen G2

There are countless science activities at Harrow.

Following on from science events such as STEAM Week and the Rocket Launch Observation Trip in Upper School, the Pre-Prep STEAM Day was held on April 28, 2023.

On this day, Harrow Haikou welcomed a special group of visitors - robots!

With the theme - Lead with Science and Technology, Join Hands with Children, the children were able to get to know robots up close. The Pre-Prep students were also given the opportunity to take on this exciting robotics challenge.

Science Exhibition on campus

The football pitch was transformed into a model display area with lots of model robots and machines to get the tech-loving kids excited!

There are different kinds of robots displayed: basketball robots, firefighting robots, flying saucer robots, sky wheels, Football robots, F1 cars, and racing model cars……

Students gathered in front of the fascinating science exhibits, “Wow! It's so cool!” The children were amazed at how fascinating robotics and science can be.

After gaining a comprehensive understanding of the types and functions of robots, many students asked the question:

What can we do with robots?

So, we brought students together to experience the robotics challenge and to think creatively through the experience.

Rubber Powered Model Aircraft

Powered models are entry-level models that rely on the elastic potential energy of rubber bands to provide power. The students made their own model aircraft. How can they control the balance of the airframe and how can they make the aircraft fly higher? The students were eager to seek advice from the instructors.

Robot Football Challenge

How do you get a robot to play football? Teams are required to design their own robots that can perform multiple integrated tasks. Two robots from the same team had to work together to compete against two robots from the opposing team to win the title of Little Green Man. This challenge also allows students to develop their mechanical design, motion control and teamwork skills.

Mecha Master Challenge

The Mecha Master Challenge cultivates young people's knowledge of engineering theory and the practical ability of artificial intelligence. This competition tests students' ability to react on the spot, to identify and solve problems, and to test their teamwork and sense of responsibility.

The competition was split into two teams, with Harrow's youngsters controlling the robot to dodge obstacles and clear targets, with the side that returned to the starting point first winning. The challenge encouraged students to experience artificial intelligence, develop practical engineering skills and ultimately gain knowledge through competition.

MakeX Robot Challenge

As an entry-level STEAM educational robot, mBot makes learning and teaching robot programming easy and fun. With a single screwdriver, students can experience the joy of creation. In this experience, Harrow Young Scientists met various robotic mechanical and electronic parts, learn block programming, and develop their own logic and design thinking.

Faced with challenges that we thought would be difficult to complete, Harrow students never gave up. These activities were a complete showcase of Harrow Haikou's innovation in classroom expansion, with each student positively facing challenges, applying innovative thinking, and bravely going above and beyond.

Within the framework of Holistic Education, we encourage children to be creative and have freedom to explore.

We provide them with opportunities that will inspire them toward future success.

We believe that every student has the potential to be a scientist in the future. We look forward to exploring more areas of technology on campus together in the future!

I love making the model aircraft, ball-catching machine, powered models, and tank battles! I love every project! Even though I'm only in Grade 2, I really want to study physics and chemistry. This way I can know how to make more models and I want to be a scientist soon.

——Alan Zhang G2

My favourite was the Robot Football Challenge. I had to try and try and try every button before I knew what they did. I also had to work with my classmates to complete the challenge, the more challenging it was the more fun it was!

——Lisa Wen G2

The elastic powered model is amazing, it doesn't need an engine to fly. The teacher said that the rubber bands twist to provide the power and although I don't really understand it yet, I'll get it after I do it a few more times. I used to do Lego programming on my iPad, but today it's my first time with so many robots. It's so cool!
