Mr. Jordan Cochrane

In the 2023 National Science League (NSL),

AISL Harrow Zhuhai students won a total of

1 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals,

as well as 10 honorable mentions.

One of the world's most

prestigious science competitions

for primary and secondary schools,

National Science League (NSL) began in 1980 and

is dedicated to inspiring children

with scientific thinking

and interdisciplinary knowledge

and application skills.

How did Harrow Zhuhai

achieve such success after

only 2 years of existence?

What are the mysteries of science education at Harrow Zhuhai?

Today we'll take you

inside Harrow's science

classes and explain how

scientific thinking should

be nurtured from an early age.

What is scientific thinking?

Mr. Jordan Cochrane

Head of Science

In general, Science consists of three domains: it is a body of knowledge, but also a wide range of methods or processes to develop this knowledge; but more importantly, it is a way of thinking. A scientific mind refers to a mindset characterized by curiosity, critical thinking, and a love for exploration and experimentation. We encourage our children to ask questions, observe the world, form hypotheses, and test them through systematic investigation.

An Innovative Curriculum

In Harrow Zhuhai, we recognise the importance of a global perspective in science education. Our students benefit from a bilingual learning environment where they are able to develop a bilingual mindset for science subjects. Through an innovative blend of the Chinese National Curriculum and the International Curriculum, we provide students with a comprehensive understanding of scientific principles and practices from different perspectives.

Science is taught in Harrow Zhuhai from Grade 1. In Lower School setting, professional homeroom teachers lead students through fundamental scientific investigations based on a mixture of subjects. The children build up their most basic scientific knowledge through extensive group activities and hands-on practice, with the help of quality teaching aids and digital resources. In the process, children will not only learn about basic physics, biology, engineering and geography, but more importantly, they will experience the process of empirical evidence and build a basic scientific mindset that will prepare them for more specialised science studies in Upper School.

As they move into Upper School, Harrow students will begin to study more specialised science subjects, which cover the three main subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Harrow Zhuhai's Innovation Leadership program is an innovative blend of Chinese National Curriculum (CNC) and Cambridge IGCSE, so Harrow students are able to learn world-across science in both English and Chinese, within the framework of the CNC.

Unlike in conventional schools, all science classes in Harrow Zhuhai Upper School are conducted in laboratory classrooms. The school has world-class science laboratories, technical resources and laboratory materials. Students are able to learn more about subject through inquiry-based experiments under the guidance of specialist teachers and are able to experiment across disciplines in their learning, extending their scientific knowledge and improving their skills and innovation.

Interdisciplinary,

Project Based STEAM Education

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) is an emerging blended discipline approach to learning in recent years and Harrow Zhuhai, at the forefront of education, is bound not to miss it. At Harrow, our teaching team values the use of STEAM and encourages STEAM teaching in schools through a variety of Project Based Learning (PBL) projects that enlighten students' scientific thinking.

Interdisciplinary and integrated learning is one of the clever things about STEAM education, and science learning at Harrow Zhuhai involves an even wider range of subjects. During our school's annual STEAM WEEK, teachers from all subjects work on tasks based on science and innovation themes, with children in Maths solving engineering problems through geometry and equations, and children in English participating in science-themed debates, etc. This approach to learning is also spread across a variety of different themed learning activities such as Challenge Week, Ocean Day and Earth Day, incorporating scientific thinking and concepts into the everyday life of the school.

During the school year, Harrow Zhuhai also organises a number of outings for students to explore and learn. Harrow Zhuhai's extremely favourable location gives the school access to many convenient learning resources, whether it is a trip to the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom to learn about the diversity of marine life or a trip to the National Geographic to learn about the mysteries of the primeval forest, Harrovians came away with a great deal to learn. The school also organises trips to the International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge to learn about aerospace and construction-related science. These unique educational resources in Zhuhai are fully utilised by the Harrow education team and integrated into the children's overall learning.

Work Together

 and Face Challenges

In addition to enrichment and learning projects, learning science at Harrow Zhuhai means getting your hands and brains “dirty” and rising to the challenge. Each year, Harrow students participate in a variety of science competitions and activities both in and out of school. Most of these in-school competitions and activities are hands-on projects that allow children to produce a variety of different works and engineering samples. We always provide a stage for children to showcase them.

In Harrow Zhuhai, science projects give students the opportunity to ask questions, investigate problems and design experiments to find answers. This approach allows for exploration and discovery and helps to develop students' curiosity and creativity. Collaboration is an important aspect of scientific work, so Harrow School strongly encourages group work, partnerships and teamwork to help students develop skills in communication, problem solving and critical thinking.

We also encourage students to participate in various international science competitions and provide them with the necessary guidance and support to help them excel in science. Notably, Ray W., Grade 8, crossed over and entered with Grade 9 students in the 2023 National Science League (NSL) and still won the award. Angel L. in Grade 9 showed great courage by competing in the G12 category and we are looking forward to seeing how she will perform in the future.
