International Food Day

Ms. Vivian Wang

Japan

Thailand

Italy

Turkey

As a British boarding school, Harrow Zhuhai has often been asked on its catering services. The operation of a school's canteen is not only a reflection of the school's overall operational standard, but also the foundation for the children's physical and mental development and growth. Harrow Zhuhai's catering is not only committed to providing children with "mouthfuls" and "flavours" of school life, but also innovatively participates in fun teaching projects to empower Harrow’s holistic education.

The canteen at Harrow Zhuhai has received

many favourable comments since

the opening of the school

Cafeteria staff representatives honoured at  whole school assembly

What's more, the canteen has been striving for excellence on the basis of guaranteeing daily supply and often come up with many new tricks! Echoing the practice of bilingual and bicultural teaching, expanding cultural experience, this school year, the canteen of Harrow Zhuhai proudly presents

International Food Day

As the saying goes, the terroir makes the dish.

There is no better way to

experience different countries’ culture

than by tasting their food!

Ms. Vivian Wang

Harrow Zhuhai Operations Manager

Project Lead of the International Food Day

"To organise the International Food Day, we conducted an online voting for students to select their favourite four food countries, followed by a monthly themed lunch for one country. Through promotional film played in canteen before the event, students know the food and culture of this country in advance. In addition to the speciality food, traditional gifts were also prepared to stimulate the students' interest in deepening their understanding of the customs and culture of different countries, linking back to the education."

This school year, our culinary footprints

span nearly 10,000 kilometres

from East Asia to the Mediterranean

It's time to reminisce about

those colourful foodie countries!

The First Station

Japan

Japanese culture is distinctive, paying attention to "colour, appearance and taste" of food, and focusing on the ornament of the dishes, which has led to the saying that "Japanese food is eaten with the eyes". At the same time, the Japanese people, who attach great importance to history, have inherited the eating habits of their ancestors, and the entire eating environment is filled with a subtle and restrained sense of beauty that cannot be ignored.

Japan

Fun Facts

Surrounded by the sea and dotted with islands, Japan is blessed with seafood, which makes the Japanese diet rich in seafood and raw food. However, the shortage of natural resources has led to the Japanese people's habit of saving salt and oil, and over time, freshness and lightness have developed into the dominant dietary tastes.

On this themed lunch, the canteen was transformed into an 'izakaya' and the children were treated to an exquisite Japanese meal accompanied by unique Japanese folk music. As the first stop of the International Food Day, students and teachers were pleasantly surprised and praised the food.

The Second Station

Thailand

Thai cuisine is a mix of spicy, sweet, sour, salty and sometimes bitter flavours, often using fresh herbs and ingredients, and ranging from mildly aromatic to fiery and intense, the flavours of the dishes are rich and varied while maintaining a wonderful balance. The presentation is often visually appealing, with dishes often adorned with a variety of brightly coloured herbs, chillies, limes and even flowers.

Thailand

Fun Facts✦

Thailand is situated on the tropical coast of Asia and is rich in produce. The abundance of fresh ingredients such as aromatic herbs, spices, tropical fruits and seafood have influenced the flavours and choices of ingredients used in Thai culinary. In addition, the influence of the royal family in Thailand and the delicacy of the court cuisine has also influenced the flavour presentation of Thai cuisine.

It was early summer on Thai lunch day, and as soon as the brightly coloured dishes with fresh ingredients were served, the summer flavour swept through the canteen. Even the canteen staff dressed up in beach outfits, transporting everyone to the sunny Phuket beach with blue skies and white clouds in a second!

The Third Station

Italy

Located in the mild Mediterranean climate, Italy has a long tradition of slow food, and enjoying good food is one of life's great pleasures. Fresh herbs, vegetables, fruits, cheeses, meats and seafood play a vital role in Italian cuisine. The simplicity of cooking allows the natural flavours of the ingredients to shine through. Classic Italian desserts are also favoured worldwide.

Italy

Fun Facts✦

When it comes to Italian cuisine, we have to mention the most prestigious olive oil. Italy is full of hills and oil farms, planting more than 600 kinds of virgin olive oil fruits; most of them are hand-picked, and the oil is pressed quickly after olive harvesting, so the finished products are fresh and of high quality. Therefore, the price of Italian extra virgin olive oil is the most expensive in the domestic market.

On the day of the Italian themed lunch, not only were the students excited, but also the Head Master, Dr. Max Caruso. The head master's family is from Italy, and he was so enthusiastic about the wide array of dishes from his home country that he even took on the role of a chef and introduced a special dish to the students.

The Forth Station

Turkey

Straddling the continents of Asia and Europe, Turkey has been a crossroads of Eastern and Western civilisations since ancient times and its cuisine is a fusion of Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Balkan flavours. Grilled meats play an important role in Turkish cuisine. Yoghurt and cheese are often used as refreshing accompaniments to meals, which reminds people of the Mediterranean. Spices such as tomato, cumin, sumac and saffron reflect a strong Middle Eastern flavour.

Turkey

Fun Facts✦

For those of you who have read The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Magic Wardrobe, do you remember the Turkish sugar that appears in the book? Lokum is a famous traditional dessert that originated as a royal delicacy during the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century, and is renowned for its unique texture, wide choice of flavours, and exquisite appearance, as evidenced by its nickname "Turkish Delight".

+

The students had a great time eating the Turkish flavours that they rarely get to experience in their daily life at school. The huge kebabs were a wonder to behold and the variety of grilled kebabs was overwhelming. It was a day when everyone realised the freedom of grilling!

The International Food Day

emphasises more than just "food".

It's about the culture and social

customs behind the food.

From the environment to the details,

it is an immersive

cross-cultural experience!

Looking forward to

the next school year when

Our culinary journey will set sail again

To reach further places!
