Celebration of Mind Day

colour

Celebration of Mind (CoM) is a world-wide series of events designed to bring people together to share and delight in playing with puzzles, games and magic. CoM events and materials are designed to inspire, delight and awe.  Events are often held on or around October 21st in honour of Martin Gardner’s birthday. He is known for developing a range of fun-filled and creative maths activities.

Last Friday

Harrow Hengqin Upper School held its

first Celebration of Mind Day

and to celebrate the day,

the Maths team prepared a series of fun activities

for Harrow students to choose

 from according to their interests,

and those who excelled in these

activities were awarded House Points.

These fun activities are not only maths games,

but also interactive learning

across disciplines and cultures.

There are both classic puzzles from the Western mathematical world

and folk games that pass

on Chinese intangible culture heritage,

as well as a wonderful

combination of maths and art.

Logic of Chess

Mr Jordan Cochrane, Head of Science, led the students through the tactics of chess, introducing the layout and moves of the six pieces: rook, knight, bishop, king, queen and pawns, and inviting the students to compare the differences between chess and Chinese chess, and to understand the logic behind the Chinese and Western approaches on the chessboard

After learning sufficient theoretical knowledge, Harrow students played Chess and Chinese Chess in groups and gained a deeper understanding of the logic of the board in real life. Impressed by the students' ability to listen and then their application of the skills,he will be looking to find a competition for some of these students.

Riddles and Mathemagic

Mr. Giuseppe Miolli kicked off the session with an intriguing illusion card game, followed by two distinct number prediction activities. He then delved into the underlying formulas that explained the accuracy of his predictions, encouraging the students to create their own games based on self-made formulas.

Subsequently, he guided the students through simple methods for solving three by three and five by five magic cube problems. To keep things exciting, he briefly introduced popular riddle games like the Monty Hall problem and the three prisoners' dilemma. The session left the students with a taste of the more fascinating aspects of the subject and a discovery of a new dimension.

Bo Bing,

A Secret of Probability

In traditional Chinese culture, there are some gaming games that have been around for a long time and have endured, and “Bo Bing” (Fujian Dice Game) is one of them. Physics teacher Ms Clara Liu brought this game, which is protected as an intangible cultural heritage in Minnan region, Fujian Province, into her classroom. According to the rules, the order is followed by Champion Scholar, Runner-up, Third Place, Jinshi(Imperial exam graduates) , Recommendee and Scholar. The higher the level, the lower the probability of occurrence.

Harrow students can learn about the mystery of probability in mathematics in the process of "Bo Bing” game. Adding to probability learning in daily Maths class, the games can also deepen the students' understanding of probability.

Mondrian Art

Mondrian’s work

The Dutch painter Mondrian is known for his Neo-Plasticism, which is simple and pure, using only simple lines, right angles and blocks of primary colours for his paintings. In the class, Maths teacher Mr. Bryn Jia led Harrow students to solve a Mondrian puzzle by attempting to draw a Mondrian-style painting which is scored by subtracting the area of the largest rectangle from the area of the smallest rectangle, with the smaller the resulting area, the higher the score.

In order to get the smallest possible area after subtraction, students need the largest area to be as small as possible and the smallest area to be as large as possible. This is art as well as maths and requires students to calculate, think and reason.

Mathematical Art

Bridget Riley ‘s work

In class, art teacher Ms. Lindsey Holmes asked students to take a closer look at the work of British abstract painter Bridget Riley. 'Nataraja' is a typical diagonal striped painting, where the surface of the painting is divided by vertical and diagonal lines, creating multiple discrete areas of colour. The main difficulty with this composition is to create a unified and balanced area of visual perception, while at the same time dynamically organising the various colours.

colour

Under the guidance of the art teacher, students simplified the composition into a strict vertical stripe arrangement by experimenting with selecting a range of coloured papers and laying them vertically in an order that the harmonious colours are not adjacent to each other, the effect of the painting is a very careful balance of vertical and diagonal lines.

Fun House Maths Competition

After the above activities, the students took part in the Kahoot Maths Competition in six Houses, where they played as a team to solve the maths puzzles, and all of them paid full attention when answering the questions. The results of the competition were displayed on the screen in real time and the atmosphere was very tense and exciting!

The winners of the competition were awarded with House Points and they all worked hard for the honour of the Houses! After a fierce battle, the Houses which won the Maths Competition are as follows
