K3 (Evan Kirby)

This week in K3 we continued working on our landscapes and spent some time creating halloween decorations for the school's upcoming festivities! For the landscape project, we are learning a process, a way of working that can translate into all kinds of different end results. The process is made up of three steps: color, cut, and glue. In that order. Some of the students have taken this above and beyond that of a landscape, I am so proud of you all!

Grade 1 (Katija Bogdanic)

This week for our HWEO unit, we learned about artist Joan Miro. We responded to his work by identifying his use of line, shape and color. We focused on his Constellation series and reflected on his use of abstraction. We started our own Miro inspired art work by cutting out shapes we identified in his paintings and pasting them onto colored paper. We will continue the work next week by adding lines with black markers.

Grade 2 (Katija Bogdanic)

Continuing our study of Mexican folk-art sculptures called Alebrijas, students reflected on their own clay creatures from last week. We identified successful techniques of attaching pieces together and responding to each other’s use of pattern and color. Artists made their final Alebrijas combining two animals together to make their very own mythical creatures.

Grade 3 (Katija Bogdanic)

Continuing our David Hockney inspired landscapes for our HWEO unit, artists are working on mixing colors, and adding patterns to their canvases after drafting their final compositions. They are being mindful of vanishing point, perspective, and fauvist color palettes.

Grade 4 (Katija Bogdanic)

This week we are diving into a variety of Surrealist concepts and ideas. We reflected on our “exquisite corpses” surrealist game that combined the work of both 4th grade classes. Artists made collages by cutting out images from found/ recycles materials and made environments for our characters. We also started our abstract ink blot paintings by using straws to make interesting organic forms that we will form into compositions next week.

Grade 5 (Katija Bogdanic)

After completing the self-assessments on our embroidery projects, we dove into our new unit, WWAIPAT: Past Societies. Students researched their chosen ancient civilization for our new quilted landscape project. We are working on drafting our compositions and combining ideas for our final work. Students reflected on fibers works and tapestries from a variety of artists, responding to their use of color, pattern, and composition.

Grade 6 (Roxane Joubert)

Beautiful progress. The perfect phrase to sum up another productive week for Grade 6. As we continue to create and refine our CRITERION C artworks, The Grade 6 Visual Arts group are to be applauded for their vividly creative zentangle doodle summative assessments. With shapes, swirls, patterns, and fine linework slowly merging into a cohesive whole, we can now begin to appreciate 7 weeks of conscious, and proactive creating.

Grade 7 (Roxane Joubert)

Grade 7 keep consolidating their understanding of colour theory with another week of intensive paint- and brushwork. As our artworks begin to take shape, pleasantly unexpected results are starting to emerge. Some paintings have a clear visual narrative whilst other artworks are simply a vivid exploration and celebration of colour. Ultimately, we are enormously pleased with the body of work being produced for UNIT 1.

Grade 8 (Roxane Joubert)

With another week of shaping, molding, cutting, pasting, mounting, and sculpting behind us, our Grade 8 students are slowly preparing for the conclusion of this fascinating unit. A range of captivating maquettes have resulted after 7 weeks of painstaking trial and error and creative exploration. Experimentation with a range of materials and tools has challenged our understanding of form, aesthetics and what constitutes an effective work of art.

Grade 9 (Lucian Stefanescu)

A relatively new medium similar with woodblock printing technique, linocut appeared in the contemporary art world as an established professional print medium at the beginning of twentieth century, promoted by artists like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Linocut is a type of relief printing technique in which an image is carved into a block of linoleum, then ink is rolled onto the uncut surface, paper is placed on top of the block and, finally, pressure is applied to produce the print. During this unit, students will be guided through historical, cultural and conceptual aspects of printmaking with a focus on linocut printing technique.

This week, Grade 9 students started their research task working on increasing their knowledge and understanding of linocut printing technique.

Grade 10 (Lucian Stefanescu)

Drypoint is an engraving method in which the design to be printed is scratched directly into a copperplate with a sharply pointed instrument. Lines in a drypoint print are characterized by a soft fuzziness caused by ink printed from a burr, a rough ridge of metal thrown up on each side of the furrow of the drypoint line. Drypoint is most often used together with other printmaking techniques like monoprint or monotype in which the image created can only made once. This allows for more unique creations, but with more flexibility, as a combination of monoprinting techniques including printing, drawing, and painting can be used. During this unit, class activities will give students an opportunity to practice art fundamentals while learning technical skills in printmaking.

This week, Grade 10 students started their research task gathering information and comparing various printing techniques.

Grade 12 (Lucian Stefanescu)

In New Brunswick Programme, our student continued her previous year’s work on her portfolio and started her independent studies lens unit. During this week she practised using DSLR cameras and their manual speed settings in order to capture different images of running and falling water. She continued her practice with GIMP using various image enhancing techniques.

Grade 6 (Jose Correia)

Grade 6 It's working the unit "An Introduction to Theatre," offers students an exciting exploration of the captivating world of theatre. Throughout the course, students will become familiar with essential theatre terminology, discover the diverse practices of theatre around the globe, and engage in a variety of stimulating activities such as script work and devising.

Grade 8 (Jose Correia)

The grade 8 worked on body percussion with harmony, in which they had to compose a harmonic sequence with melody, snapping fingers, clapping, chest, legs and vocal sounds, now starting to prepare the performance for the winter concert.

MYP Drama

Grade 7 (Jonny Turvey)

In Grade 7 Drama this week, students have been taking part in the spooky spirit of Halloween as they started creating their own chilling and Halloween themed performances. The focus was to elicit fear and suspense, allowing their imagination to run wild. Some students cleverly incorporated elements from the theatre forms they have been studying, such as commedia, expressionism, or theatre of the absurd, to add a unique twist to their spine-tingling presentations. However, the emphasis remained on having fun and celebrating the Halloween season. Next week students will perform these Halloween skits before we move on with the unit.

Grade 10 (Jonny Turvey)

Grade 10 Drama students have been diligently preparing for the Winter Concert performance, where they will showcase a play, a song, and a dance alongside musicians. They have been rehearsing extensively to perfect their routines and collaborating closely with the musicians to ensure a harmonious performance. The students are eagerly looking forward to the Winter Concert, where they will have the opportunity to inspire and captivate the audience with their artistic talents.
