Grade 1 (Katija Bogdanic)

This week in our art class, we completed the final touches on our Joan Miro inspired work. We then participated in a gallery walk where we respectfully and critically responded to each other's work. Additionally, we began our big self-portrait project by creating our first practice draft while dressed in our Halloween costumes.

Grade 2 (Katija Bogdanic)

We responded to the work of Paul Klee, a famous artist known for his use of geometric shapes and color theory. We focused on one painting in particular, Castle and Sun 1928, as inspiration for our new project. Students drafted their villages based on the shapes they identified in Klee’s work using rulers and stencils.

Grade 3 (Katija Bogdanic)

Students made progress on their David Hockney inspired landscapes for our HWEO unit. They are being mindful of vanishing point, perspective, and fauvist color palettes. Artists are working on mixing colors and adding patterns to their canvases. Each artist is creating unique landscape that reflects the style of David Hockney.

Grade 4 (Katija Bogdanic)

After carefully examining our abstract ink blot paintings, we used our creativity and imagination to identify images hidden within the ink blots. We brought these images to life using white charcoal pencils and gel pens, adding intricate details and vibrant colors to our unique creations. We also introduced our new long-term group project which deals with creating a stop-motion animation while using the surrealist elements we have been practicing in this term.

Grade 5 (Katija Bogdanic)

This week we are finalizing the first drafts for our quilted landscape project as a part of our joined unit, WWAIPAT: Past Societies. Each student researched an ancient civilization and composed a landscape with three reference points to their era. We are thinking about foreground, middle ground, background, as well as color composition. Next week we will start creating our landscapes out of fabric using the embroidery techniques we learned in the last unit.

Grade 9 (Lucian Stefanescu)

A relatively new medium similar with woodblock printing technique, linocut appeared in the contemporary art world as an established professional print medium at the beginning of twentieth century, promoted by artists like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Linocut is a type of relief printing technique in which an image is carved into a block of linoleum, then ink is rolled onto the uncut surface, paper is placed on top of the block and, finally, pressure is applied to produce the print. During this unit, students will be guided through historical, cultural and conceptual aspects of printmaking with a focus on linocut printing technique.

This week, Grade 9 students continued their research and study task, working on increasing their knowledge and understanding of linocut printing technique ad submitted their findings for review.

Grade 10 (Lucian Stefanescu)

Drypoint is an engraving method in which the design to be printed is scratched directly into a copperplate with a sharply pointed instrument. Lines in a drypoint print are characterized by a soft fuzziness caused by ink printed from a burr, a rough ridge of metal thrown up on each side of the furrow of the drypoint line. Drypoint is most often used together with other printmaking techniques like monoprint or monotype in which the image created can only made once. This allows for more unique creations, but with more flexibility, as a combination of monoprinting techniques including printing, drawing, and painting can be used. During this unit, class activities will give students an opportunity to practice art fundamentals while learning technical skills in printmaking.

This week, Grade 10 students continued their research task gathering information and comparing various printing techniques, and submitted their findings for review. They also proved to be very creative with their costumes during the school’s Halloween celebration.
