In the Painting and Calligraphy Room of ASJ, Ms. Lai Yongguan, the fourth generation inheritor of the non-heritage Canton embroidery, firstly introduced Cantonese embroidery and explained the difference between Cantonese embroidery and Canton embroidery to the ASJ students and the Danish exchange students. Cantonese embroidery is the collective name of Canton embroidery and Chiu Chow embroidery, which is produced in the Guangdong region and is known as one of the "Four Famous Embroideries of China" along with Suzhou embroidery (Jiangsu), Hunan embroidery (Hunan) and Sichuan embroidery (Sichuan). Among them, Canton Embroidery is famous for its full composition, vivid image, clear texture, rich color, varied stitches, and good at changing artistic characteristics.
In the class, Ms. Lai introduced the ASJ students to the long history of Cantonese embroidery and the commonly used embroidery needles, embroidery threads, rolls of trellis as well as the embroidery process. Ms. Lai also introduced special works such as "A Hundred Birds Contesting". By analyzing the types of embroidery and presentation techniques of the excellent works, she let the students feel the beauty and skill of Cantonese embroidery, for example, the embroiderer will skillfully match and transform various stitches with each other according to the design intention and the shape, texture and demeanor of the object in order to achieve the best artistic effect.
As a non-heritage culture, the inheritance and innovation of Canton embroidery have been attracting public attention and discussion. In this class, Ms. Lai also brought some innovative works of Canton embroidery. Breaking through the limitations of picture frames, Canton embroidery appeared in earrings and other delicate jewelry, Canton embroidery patterns become smaller, but the pattern texture is still clear, and the lifelike image made students wonder.
In the experience div, students chose their favorite patterns to experience the Canton embroidery with great enthusiasm. In the needle threading practice, students felt the embroidery is not easy, a small needle with delicate embroidery thread actually contains a mix of needle, swimming needle, mixed needle, seeding needle, cross needle and so on more than ten kinds of stitches, just embroidered the edge of the pattern is difficult for many students.
Nonetheless, the students' enthusiasm for Canton embroidery continued to grow around Ms. Lai. In the process, ASJ students experienced the charm and cultural value of Canton embroidery, while the Danish exchange students also experienced the vastness and depth of the excellent traditional culture of the Chinese nation.
Chinese painting and Canton embroidery are both excellent traditional cultures of the Chinese nation. Allowing ASJ students to perceive and experience the excellent traditional culture in the classroom is conducive to enhancing students' art appreciation and learning ability, as well as national pride and cultural confidence.
