                          Pre-K (Evan Kirby)

This week the students finished their Christmas decorations and worked on their fine motor skills through a paper cutting activity. This developed their nonverbal communication skills through a demonstration of how to follow the line when cutting. They also worked on their language comprehension abilities through observing landscapes and saying the names of things they saw within them. They are learning so quickly!

K1 (Evan Kirby)

This week the students put the final additions on their Christmas decorations and developed their fine motor skills by creating mandalas. They practiced personal artistic expression by choosing their own color pallets and improving their mind-body connection by coloring within a defined area. Huge improvements!

K2 (Evan Kirby)

This week we began to look at paper paintings created by Matisse. Each student got to observe and comment on some of Matisse’s historical works. They learned how little shapes can come together to create forms and simple images. The students all took part in a follow along activity where they created a bird by cutting shapes out of colored paper. Excellent work team!

K3 (Evan Kirby)

This week we finished our Christmas decorations and continued working on our Pablo Picasso portraits. The students got to observe and talk about what makes a painting abstract, and what makes a painting realistic. We also discussed what kinds of expectations we have for artwork that we would put in a gallery. Excellent job team!

Grade 1 (Katija Bogdanic)

Continuing our focus on observational animal studies, we applied what we learned from drawing and paper collage to our intro to clay project. Students learned how to divide their animals into basic shapes while maintaining structural integrity in their sculptures. We applied pattern and color and engaged in a constructive gallery walk.

Grade 2 (Katija Bogdanic)

This week we continued our weaving on our looms. As a part of our linked unit of inquiry, Culture in Art,  we watched a short documentary about the Yunjin Silk Brocade weaving tradition from Nanjin, China. Students reflected on the differences between loom sizes, details, and materials.

Grade 3 (Katija Bogdanic)

This week we started our new sculpture unit. We learned about abstract art and responded to the work of Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Calder. Students were challenged with the task of creating an abstract sculpture using only paper. Without the use of glue or tape, students created slits in the paper to build dimension and stability.

Grade 4 (Katija Bogdanic)

Students are finalizing the sets for their stop-motion animations. One set needs to include a one-point perspective and the other is of their choice. They were rewarded this week for doing a wonderful job at staying focused and working diligently on time management and task distribution among their groups.

Grade 5 (Katija Bogdanic)

Students are working hard on their ancient civilization quilted landscapes. We are applying our embroidery and sewing techniques to the fabric landscapes to create lines, color, and dimension. Their textile pieces are coming along nicely.

Grade 6 (Roxane Joubert)

This week, we continued our focus on UNIT 2: From Micro to Macro. Students dedicated time to their CRITERION C summative assessments, applying the “Law of Thirds” to transpose their reference images onto A3 pages. This method establishes the foundational composition, allowing students to accurately capture accurate proportions. Some students practiced their observational drawing skills, while others ventured into their initial layers of water-based paint. The diverse results showcased individual creativity, strengths, weaknesses and surprising new approaches.

Grade 7 (Roxane Joubert)

Our Visual Arts students continued their exploration of traditional mask-making this week. Grade 7 dedicated their efforts to refining their UNIT 2 artworks, taking time to focus on the finer aesthetic details. With an emphasis on texture, form, and colour, they made considerable effort to bring out the unique qualities of their masks. Engaging classroom discussions on artistic choices enriched the creative process. Overall, the week showcased significant progress, providing students with a solid foundation for future investigations on the theme.

Grade 8 (Roxane Joubert)

Grade 8 students were tasked with two formative drawing challenges as they continue their exploration of one-point perspective. They skillfully drafted a tiled floor, observing how perspective techniques conveyed the illusion of diminishing sizes and receding shapes. For the latter part of the week, emphasis shifted to mastering the front- and side views of a basic staircase. Through the application of basic geometry, students honed their ability to accurately plot treads and rises, enhancing their understanding of 3D spatial representation in art.

Grade 9 (Lucian Stefanescu)

A relatively new medium similar with woodblock printing technique, linocut appeared in the contemporary art world as an established professional print medium at the beginning of twentieth century, promoted by artists like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Linocut is a type of relief printing technique in which an image is carved into a block of linoleum, then ink is rolled onto the uncut surface, paper is placed on top of the block and, finally, pressure is applied to produce the print. During this unit, students will be guided through historical, cultural and conceptual aspects of printmaking with a focus on linocut printing technique.

This week, Grade 9 students continued carving their plates and print linocut proofs.

Grade 10 (Lucian Stefanescu)

Drypoint is an engraving method in which the design to be printed is scratched directly into a copperplate with a sharply pointed instrument. Lines in a drypoint print are characterized by a soft fuzziness caused by ink printed from a burr, a rough ridge of metal thrown up on each side of the furrow of the drypoint line. Drypoint is most often used together with other printmaking techniques like monoprint or monotype in which the image created can only made once. This allows for more unique creations, but with more flexibility, as a combination of monoprinting techniques including printing, drawing, and painting can be used. During this unit, class activities will give students an opportunity to practice art fundamentals while learning technical skills in printmaking.

This week, Grade 10 students continued working on their drypoint plates while printing proofs and series prints.

Grade 12 (Lucian Stefanescu)

In New Brunswick Programme, our student continued working on her portfolio and adding artworks in her exhibition file.

Grade 7 (Jonny Turvey)

In Grade 7 Drama this week, students have been engaging in independent work to enrich the characters and plots in their short plays. Afterward, they reconvened in their groups to share their progress and updates with one another. Collaboratively, they discussed the various ideas and decided which ideas to move forward with, considering the strengths of each concept. This process fostered teamwork and critical thinking as they evaluated and selected the most promising projects. The students will continue to rehearse and will perform before the Winter break.

Grade 10 (Jonny Turvey)

In Grade 10 Drama this week, students have been engrossed in the preparations for their upcoming performance. They have been diligently working on Matheus' written play, titled 'What's in the Box?' The students have been actively involved in rehearsals, refining their acting skills and bringing the characters to life. In addition to their dramatic endeavors, they have also been dedicating time to practicing singing and dancing for their Barbie-inspired performance, which will immediately follow the play. This multifaceted approach has allowed the students to explore various aspects of theatrical arts, showcasing their versatility and passion. The combination of acting, singing, and dancing has created an exciting synergy, enhancing their overall performance.
