SPELLING BEE | 在学习中评估成长

国际文凭组织(IBO)在官方文件Learning and Teaching中提到,学业评价实践的三个层次包括为了学习的评估, 评估学习以及在学习中评估, 而Spelling Bee作为IB-PYP的重要英语学科活动,它本身既是对学生本学期英语词句学习的总结性评价,也激励着学生寻找合适自己的词句学习方法。




本周四,在CBIS英语语言中心的组织下,Spelling Bee在四楼演艺厅如约进行,孩子们不仅将其作为期末英语复习的契机,更将其当作英语能力展示的舞台。




设立目标 周全准备

PREPARATION




在活动准备阶段,各年级英语组老师将本学期的核心词句编写成Spelling Bee词汇复习书。每一位孩子根据词汇复习书,设定准备阶段的学习目标,他们在早读和英语课课间对核心词句进行朗读与背默,并利用碎片时间进行听写与订正。




在准备阶段,老师为孩子们提供充足的学习资源支持,而孩子们作为学习的主体,在Spelling Bee比赛的驱动下,积极发挥作为学习者的能动性,制定学习目标并互相监督学习目标的落实。




全员参与 多元展示

PRESENTATION




在活动当天,每一位孩子都获得了上台表现的机会,G1-G2的孩子们积极参与到“看图猜词”,在舞台上自信展示自己的单词认读能力。



而随着活动难度的梯度上升,G3-G4的孩子们则通过“听词拼写”展现了令人惊叹的单词辨音与单词拼写能力。



而本次Spelling Bee难度最高的活动则在G5-G6进行,高年段的孩子们需要“看主题,想单词,拼单词”,他们的词汇拼写与词汇分类能力得到了观众与评委的称赞。




正向激励 积极反思

REFLECTION




在活动尾声,评委Ms.Diamond与Ms.Sami宣布了两项大奖的得主--优胜团队与优胜选手。获奖者在台上获得英语组老师为他们颁发的奖项,并与台下观众一同分享作为学习者的荣耀。而没有获得奖状的选手也借助本次活动,积极反思自己的学习过程,将评价作为学习的一部分,不断优化学习过程,同时为英语期末标准测评作出更具针对性的准备。




本次IB-PYP Spelling Bee活动体现了学科活动在学业评价中的重要性,它是形式新颖的英语词句学习总结性评估,它与本学期学科学习的紧密联系让它不再流于形式,而是成为孩子们期末复习的重要一环。

The International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) mentioned in its official document “Learning and Teaching” that the three levels of assessment practice include formative assessment (assessment for learning), summative assessment  (assessment of learning), and assessment as a learning method (assessment as learning). Spelling Bee, as an important English subject activity of IB-PYP, is itself a summative assessment of students' English vocabulary and sentence learning this semester. It also motivates students to find suitable methods for learning English words and phrases.




This Thursday, under the lead of CBIS English language center, Spelling Bee was held as scheduled in the performance hall. The children not only viewed it as an opportunity for semester-end review, but also as a stage to showcase their English abilities.




PREPARATION




During the activity preparation stage, English teachers from each grade compiled the key vocabulary of this semester into the Spelling Bee vocabulary review book. Each child set learning goals for the preparation stage based on the vocabulary review book. They read and memorize core words and phrases during morning reading sessions and English classes, and used free time for dictation and error correction.




In the preparation stage, the teacher provided sufficient learning support for the children, and the children, as the owner of their learning, actively exerted their agency as learners under the driving force of the Spelling Bee competition, set learning goals, and mutually monitored the realization of learning goals.




PRESENTATION




On the day of the event, every child had the opportunity to perform on stage. The G1-G2 children actively participated in "look an say" and confidently demonstrated their word identification ability on stage.



As the difficulty level gradually increased, children from G3-G4 demonstrated amazing ability in word pronunciation and spelling through "listen and spell".



The most challenging activity of Spelling Bee this time was held in G5-G6, where the higher graders were required to "look at the theme, think of a word, and spell it out". Their vocabulary spelling and classification skills were highly praised by the audiences and judges.




REFLECTION





At the end of the event, the judges Ms.Diamond and Ms.Sami announced the winners of two major awards - the winning house and each grade’s best finalist. The winners received awards from the English teachers on stage and shared their pride as learners with the audiences. And contestants who did not receive certificates also took advantage of this activity to actively reflect on their learning process, using the assessment as a learning approach, continuously optimizing the learning process, and making specific preparations for the English semester-end standardized test.
