Language A Highlights

Grade 6 (Mr. Ryan Stienberg)

The grade 6s began the week by doing a comprehension activity based on their winterholiday reading. Thereafter, the learners reviewed the elements we have been dealingwith during unit 2 - Public Speaking. The students then gave a speech about anexperience they had during their holiday; utilizing the techniques reviewed. Thereafterthe students were provided with constructive feedback and asked to reflect on theirspeech. We then delved into speech structure; looking specifically at outlining a speechand the parts of an introduction.


Grade 7 (Mr. Ryan Stienberg)

The grade 7s began the week by doing a comprehension activity based on their winterholiday reading. Thereafter, the learners reviewed the elements we have been dealingwith during unit 2 - Advertising. The students then, collaboratively, created anadvertisement based on an experience they had during their holiday, and how some donot have access to that experience due to poverty or disability. Thereafter, we beganlooking at examples and the structure of rationale. We ended the week with the learnerswriting a rationale for the advertisement they created.


Grade 8 (Mr. Ryan Stienberg)

The grade 8s began the week by doing a comprehension activity based on their winterholiday reading. Thereafter, the learners reviewed the elements we have been dealingwith during unit 2 - Poetry. The students then created a poem based on an experiencethey had during their holiday and were required to recite it in the manner in which poetryshould be spoken. Thereafter, we began looking into the literary devices utilized inpoetry. We ended the week with learners analyzing the style of poems.


Grade 9 (Mr. Ryan Stienberg & Mr. Turvey)

During this week, the grade 9s prepared for their upcoming English exam. To do so,they analyzed images, wrote practice essays, and did a formative quiz.


Grade 10 (Mr. Miller & Mr. Turnbull)

The grade 10 English Language and Literature class began the week by completingtheir major group summative task. Students were required to create an online brand andcreate several social media posts to promote their brand. Later in the week, the classfocused on preparing and reviewing for exams. Students reviewed the expectations forthe exam, learned time management strategies, and how to write formally vs informally.Students had some time to review, reflect, study and ask questions in preparation fortheir exam.


Grade 11 (Mr. Turnbull)

The grade 11 English A: Language and Literature class spent this week preparing forexams. Using a flipped classroom method, students created brief presentationsexploring and discussing the final chapters of Norwegian Wood. The class practicedpeer and self-evaluation by marking their own take-home Paper #2. Students allreceived feedback on their take-home Paper #2s and used this feedback to create aplan of how to best prepare for their exam.


Grade 12 (Mr. Turnbull)

The grade 12 English A: Language and Literature class spent the week preparing fortheir Paper #1 exam. The class reviewed the wine label text that they used for apractice Paper #1. Students read a high caliber response to the wine label text andlearned new strategies for developing perceptive arguments. The class played ajeopardy style review game that reviewed important terms relevant to Paper #1.

Grade 6 German (Mr. Robert Jordan)

This week, the students spoke about their christmas holidays. They drew pictures,presenting their stories. We also had the topic animation in practice (e.g. differentanimation detail depending for whom, what and on which medium you animate or whatgames try to reach with animation). We had the topic idioms (esp. with colors) andGerman culture geography.


Grade 7 German (Mr. Robert Jordan)

We started this week speaking about our individual Christmas holidays and writing textsin the simple past about it. We spoke about the anime Your name and the video gameslay the princess with its various decisions, artstyle and writing. We spoke aboutanimation in practice (e. g. what do games try to reach with animation? or animationdetail), writing characters for interesting stories and indirect speech.


Grade 8 German (Mr.Sebastian Adler)

During the first week of the Grade 8 IB MYP Poetry unit, students delved into the worldof poetry. They explored diverse poetic forms, analyzed the impact of imagery andfigurative language, and engaged in collaborative activities, sharing personalinterpretations. Through creative writing exercises, students created their own poems,fostering a deeper understanding of poetic elements. The week concluded with areflection on their journey and a review of key concepts, laying a solid foundation forfurther exploration in the coming weeks.


Grade 9 German (Mr. Robert Jordan)

This week, we had test preparation with various short texts and also spoke about storyand especially character writing.


Grade 10 German (Mr. Sebastian Adler)

This week, the students solely prepared for the upcoming Mid-Term Exams next week.They practiced using past papers.


Grade 12 German A (Mr. Sebastian Adler)

This week, the students solely prepared for the upcoming Mid-Term Exams next week.They practiced using past papers.


Grade 10 Korean (Ms. Claire Kim)

MYP year 5 Korean Language and Literature class engaged in a preparation week forthe upcoming semester exam this week through deep analyzing poems by Yun Dongju.Students discussed rhetorical devices, narratives, imagery, and the structure of eachpoem. And this lesson also will help students’ unit summative which is a comparativeessay. And G10 students discussed their holiday homework, essays about TOKquestions to learn various approaches in problem-solving. Also, students reviewednarrative writing techniques for deep understanding for the exam.


Grade 11 Korean (Ms. Claire Kim)

DP year 1 Korean Language and Literature focused on Paper 1 building upon thepractice writing they had completed as part of their holiday homework. Specifically, theyexamined a public campaign advertisement as a non-literary text and engaged inguided textual analysis. Students actively participated in discussions centered aroundthe various components of the text. To further enhance their understanding, studentsreceived marked feedback on their initial analyses and then proceeded to reorganizetheir outlines, effectively demonstrating their improved comprehension and applicationof the concepts discussed. Our G11 students started semester exam starting from thisFriday.


Grade 12 Korean (Ms. Claire Kim)

DP year 2 Korean Language and Literature continued their exploration of intertextualitythrough engaging discussions centered around a TOK question: "Does knowledge ofconventions of form, text type, and of literary and rhetorical techniques allow for a betterand deeper understanding of a text?" Students actively participated in thesediscussions, offering their diverse opinions as DP students. During these discussions,students sought out evidence and ideas by analyzing non-literary texts that explored thetheme of gender discrimination. This analysis was conducted using curated newsarticles and materials from a non-profit organization. The students delved into topicssuch as intertextuality and sexuality, while also examining the distinctive features ofdifferent text types through practical application. Our G12 students started the semesterexam starting from this Friday.


Language B Highlights

Grade 6 (Ms. Joubert and Mr. Dooley)

Ms Joubert’s Grade 6  Phase 2/3 students smoothly transitioned back from their winter break, proactively working on activities centered around their reader "Max Einstein: The Genius Experiment." Students thoroughly analysed Chapter 6, conducting a formative assessment using a TOEFL-style quiz to determine improvement in our Reading Skills. Their focus turned to "Healthy Food," as the built key vocabulary for our upcoming 250-word blog entry.  Emphasis will be on experimenting with grammar, sentence structure, and transitional words to encourage the development of individual creative writing styles.

Meanwhile, Mr. Dooley’s Grade 6 Language Acquisition class were also very productive. The students looked at each other’s healthy food videos and considered any changes they would make if they were starting again. Students then looked at some key events that took place in the book ‘Max Einstein’ and started creating our in dept reviews of the book focusing on creating detailed recommendations for others.

Grade 7 (Mr. Hood and Mr. Dooley)

Mr. Hood’s Grade 7s have been working on their second unit summative assessments this week. The summative asks the Grade 7s to create an innovative and unique school website using the CANVA website. The website must consist of at least two interviews and two articles regarding working abroad and an invention people cannot live without.

Meanwhile, Mr. Dooley’s Grade 7 Language Acquisition class also were very productive. They started off our week discussing what we got up to over the winter vacation. The students created their own presentations on their dream jobs focusing on where in the world they would prefer to work and why they believe they are suited to the position. Students then created interview questions for us to use for their audio interviews and stated the recording process.


Grade 8 (Mr. Hood and Ms. Bartoszak)

Mr. Hood’s The Grade 8s have been working on their formal speech writing skills this week. The first lesson consisted of the Grade 8s being taught formal speech writing skills and strategies. The remaining lessons focused on the Grade 8s planning process and then on the Grade 8s writing process with a special focus being placed on the speech structure.

Meanwhile, Ms Bartoszak’s Grade 8 students commenced the new school year by focusing on developing their sentence construction. Students practiced various exercises paying particular attention to conjunctions used to: add information and ideas, contrast ideas, describe reasons and results, as well as talk about choices and alternatives. They researched various reviews: films and books and used their chosen reviews to explore features, style, content as well as persuasive language. Students shared all their conceptual understanding of reviews with their peers.


Grade 9 (Mr. Hood and Mr. Dooley)

Mr. Hood’s Grade 9s have been using this week to better prepare for their upcoming exams. They have completed three different writing tasks to prepare them for the writing component of their exams and have also been practicing comprehension skills and completed an ELPA preparation activity which also further assisted them in preparing for an upcoming comprehension in their exams next week.

Meanwhile, Mr. Dooley’s Grade 9 Language Acquisition class also were very productive. Students started off their week discussing what they did over the winter vacation and looked at the reading comprehension tasks we finished over the break.  Next, students focused on looking at important command terms and how to interpret the level of detail required from questions and how to identify key information within texts.


Grade 10 (Ms Najuma and Mr. Dooley)

In Ms. Najuma's 10th-grade English class, students dedicated the week to working together on parts one and two of their summative hero's journey podcast. They collaborated to create a narrative that was both coherent and cohesive, with each student contributing to the different script writing and script editing parts. Additionally, students had the chance to review for their upcoming semester exam.

Meanwhile, Mr. Dooley’s Grade 10 Language Acquisition class also were very productive. Students started off their week discussing what they did over the winter vacation and looked at the reading comprehension tasks they finished over the break. Students reviewed content for their exams next week. Students looked at the progress we made so far on their podcasts and planned their recording schedule.


Grade 11 (Ms. Bartoszak)

Ms Bartoszak’s Grade 11 students this week by exploring a new theme: Human Ingenuity. Students analysed a painting of an artists impression of a future world and answered guided questions. Students also had to predict their future with regards to modern technology. Students then shared their ideas with their peers, which also allowed them to practice their oral skills. Students ended the week by developing their reading skills, with particular focus on true/ false as well as justification type questions. At the end of the week, students started their Mid Term Exam.


Grade 12 (Mr. Kiefer and Ms. Bartoszak)

This week, both Mr. Kiefer’s and Ms Bartoszak’s DP2 students revised for their Paper1 Mid Term Exam as well as their IA Oral which will be straight after their Mid Term Exam.
