Language A Highlights

CISH

Grade 6 (Mr. Ryan Stienberg)

The grade 6s continued to learn about speech structure and what each div includes. They learnedabout and practiced writing hooks, thesis statements, body paragraphs utilizing the Point, Example,Analysis, and Link (PEAL) structure, and conclusions. We then explored the MLA 8 citation format.Thereafter, the learners chose a topic, researched it, and wrote a full speech utilizing the structure learnedand were required to cite their sources. They then presented their speech and were given feedback onboth their structure and speaking techniques. We ended the week with the learners choosing a topic thatthey are passionate about for their summative assessment.


Grade 6


Grade 7 (Mr. Ryan Stienberg)

The grade 7s began the week by presenting their advertisement and rationale. Thereafter, they wereprovided with constructive feedback on their advertisement, rationale and speaking techniques to aidthem in better understanding what is expected of them in their final assessment. The students then chosean issue in a community of their choosing that they feel passionate about for their final summativeassessment and began brainstorming concepts for it.





Grade 8 (Mr. Ryan Stienberg)

Grade 8s were provided with various poems, such as 'I Too' and 'Litany', and asked to analyze the style ofthem. Thereafter, they peer-checked one another's work and we, as a class, discussed various examples;establishing the areas of strength and growth. The learners then brainstormed topics that they arepassionate about and began writing a poem for their final summative assessment.





Grade 6 German (Mr. Robert Jordan)

This week we were talking about stories with 2 story texts and other materials (narrative tips, changingsentence structure according to the rule importance first, talking about the story behind a detail of apicture, discussing favorite stories and what makes a story good), poems and personification, idioms withthe emphasis on prepositions.


Grade 7 German (Mr. Robert Jordan)

This week we were talking about how to write (with examples from Avatar Lord of the elements) and draw(drawing styles like the jelly style, theory of colour) characters for movies, we watched an episode of mylittle pony (perfect pear), talked about family movies like the incredibles, original-remake differences, theimdb rating and top list, and for our german curriculum idioms with the emphasis on prepositions andsentence structure according to the rule importance first.


Grade 8 German (Mr.Sebastian Adler)

In Week 2 of the Grade 8 IB MYP Poetry unit, students delved into the multifaceted dimensions of poetry.They explored themes, delving into the historical context and cultural diversity that shapes poeticexpression. The emotional resonance of poetry was examined, with students analyzing and creatingpoems to evoke specific feelings. The week concluded with a focus on performance as students preparedfor a poetry slam, blending creative expression with effective communication. This dynamic week fostereda deeper understanding of poetry's power and versatility.


Language B Highlights

Grade 6 (Ms. Joubert and Mr. Dooley)

Ms Joubert’s Grade 6 Phase 2/3 were introduced to the concepts of 'some' and 'any' while discussing healthy food. The aim of this activity was to encourage the use of positive, negative, and question statements. Throughout the week, the students also revised their use of count and noncount nouns as it relates to food. Students reflected on our use of articles, paying close attention to how certain nouns determine the correct placement of 'a' and 'an'. Additionally, Grade 6 discussed their likes and dislikes around the theme of 'Healthy Food,' which helped them gain confidence in expressing opinions in spoken English.

Meanwhile, Mr. Dooley’s Grade 6 Language acquisition class were also very productive. Students finished their work on Max Einstein Genius Experiment and shared our final thoughts on the book including which parts of the text we enjoyed the most. This week students started creating their food blogs where they constructed a healthy three course meal using foods from around the world and explained their choices using descriptive language.

Grade 7 (Mr. Hood and Mr. Dooley)

Mr Hood’s Grade 7s have spent the entire week working on and completing their second unit summative assessments. This week has been a test of their time management skills. The Grade 7s submitted their summative assessment on Friday.

Meanwhile, Mr. Dooley’s Grade 7 Language Acquisition class were also very busy this week. Students started off working on editing their audio interviews four our websites. Next, they divided into teams to start the process of giving written feedback to our peers making sure to include actions they can take to improve upon their audio interviews. Students started constructing their websites using the audio interviews as a base and creating some webpages using online software.


Grade 8 (Mr. Hood and Ms. Bartoszak)

Mr. Hood’s Grade 8’s started the week completing their before and after wechat presentations which were interesting and showed great creativity and critical thinking from the students. The Grade 8s then moved on to their book talks which asked the students to create 10 open ended and thoughtful questions about the book they are currently reading. The final activity this week was a comprehension activity aimed at further developing the reading and understanding skills of the students.

Meanwhile, Ms Bartoszak’’s Grade 8’s worked on their summative assessment. Students firstly planned their work and then focused and drafting it paying attention to language: sentence construction, spelling and grammar. They ended the week by focusing on listening skills by listening to an audio about Florence Nightingale.
