The Grade 6s started the week with a summative reflection activity and summative feedback session. The reflection asked the students to think about different points such as what they thought they had done well and what they felt they could improve on in future. The Grade 6s were then introduced to their third unit for the year which is based on what people believe in with a core focus on learning about major world religions. The first activity of the new unit asked the students to interview each other about their own personal beliefs and what life events or how different people in their lives have influenced their beliefs. The second part of the activity focused on critical thinking and asked the students in pairs to analyze four images and then try to draw connections between the images and belief and culture.

This week in grade 7 Individuals and Societies class students continued working on their unit 2 summative research project. The students completed their outline and were then introduced to 2 important skills: In-Text Citations and Paraphrasing. The students practiced alone, then in groups, and then as a class. They were able to see the different ways you can take information and write it in their own words. The students worked on their communication and thinking skills.

This week in grade 8 Individuals and Societies class students focused on the concept of Flow Resources. The students discussed the different types of flow resources, their pros and cons. Students then completed a case study looking at how Argentina utilized Flow Resources. The students finished the week looking at the concept of Sustainability. The students worked on their communication and thinking skills.

This week in grade 9 Individuals and Societies class students focused on Religion during the Medieval World. Students explored the power, influence, and hierarchy of the Church and how it helped shape people’s lives. The students completed an investigation of the Church and how it grew to gain such power and influence. The students completed the week with an introduction to the unit's final summative assessment, where they will create a poster explaining the Feudal System, including the Role of the Church, and the hierarchy of people in society. The students practiced their communication, critical thinking, and research skills.

This week, grade 10 students covered the early battles of WW1, battles like Tannenberg, Galicia, The Marne and Gallipoli. Students also worked on writing a short story that is set in WW1. Though telling this story students will be demonstrating their historical understanding by accurately reflecting the conditions of the time and how the war affected people.

Psychology

This week the Grade 11 Psychology students began their third unit on Criminology. They began by learning about the case of Charles Whitman and hypothesizing what biological factors could account for his aggressive behavior. They were introduced to the nature versus nurture debate and discussed to what extent our behavior is a result of each factor. Students learned how the brain can be divided into regions and focused on the function of the frontal lobe and prefrontal cortex.

This week the Grade 12 Psychology students prepared for their mock Paper 2 summative assessment on the topic of human relationships. They reviewed the structure and content of extended response questions and identified psychological studies that could be used in their essays to support their main arguments. The students also began planning how to revise for the external assessments by choosing which level of analysis and which option topics they will focus on for the assessments.

Global Politics

Grade 11: This week, our students began Unit 2, the Human Rights Unit. Students started off the week by examining where rights come from, the philosophical origins of the concept of human rights, and the ways in which the meaning of human rights is contested. We finished off the week by examining the concept of Justice, and how there are different approaches and visions for what justice should look like, like justice as equality, need based justice, and merit based justice. We also discussion the philosopher John Rawls and his understanding of justice as fairness. We also discussed recent news events like former president Trump winning the Iowa and New Hampshire Republican primaries in the United States.

Grade 12: This week I met with students to discuss their Paper 1 midterms, the grades they received, and how they can improve their strategies to earn the best grade possible on the actual IB Paper 1 exam in the spring. We also continued our exploration of conflict, touching on religious conflict. We examined the case study of the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir, a Hindu temple in India being built on the site of a Muslim mosque destroyed in sectarian violence. Students were asked to consider how much history has direct relevance to current conflicts, and whither historical grievances are meaningful motivators that might cause people to engage in violence.

Design Highlights

CISH

This week in G6 MYP Design, students immersed themselves in Unit 2, our safety unit. They were actively involved in designing safety posters for the Design workshop, a project that enhances their awareness and understanding of safety protocols. The week concluded with the completion of criteria A, where students demonstrated their grasp of the need for a solution to safety issues. Transitioning seamlessly, they commenced their exploration of criteria B, laying the groundwork for further development in the upcoming sessions. This hands-on engagement fosters a holistic approach to design and safety, aligning with the Design principles.

This week grade 7 students began Criteria B in unit 2. They began developing their design ideas by identifying tools and materials that they will need to use in creating their design products, a cultural dish. They added the element of their own success criteria to their portfolios. This task had students thinking about the process and setting objectives for their finished products, developing their thinking skills along the way.

This week, grade 8 students are completing Criteria B by creating a detailed sketch of their final design idea. The Criteria saw students think critically about the varying aspects that influence the creation of their educational toys, whilst identifying tools, materials and success criteria of their final design. Students are eager to start the hands-on component of the unit, where they will use materials and tools in the design lab to develop their ideas into a practical product.

This week, grade 9 students ended unit 1 by putting the finishing touches on the animal habitat products, then the class began discussions on unit two. After providing the class with parameters for the next unit, the class collaborated and came up with ideas for design products they would like to create in this unit. Students chose to design and create various forms of furniture, scaled down to accommodate grade 1 or 2 students. Students are excited to get the unit going, starting with Criteria A in the coming week.

Grade 10 students are back in class after their exam week. We picked up from where we left off in the coding unit. Students learned the differences between two common types of looping that programmers use. They then attempted to code a simple solution using a ‘while’ loop.

Grade 11: This past week was the first time that students took the computer science exam. Students’ predicted marks before the exams were only slightly higher than those after the exams. This suggests that the past assessments given were reasonable and fair for the content covered to this point in the course. After reviewing the results of the exams, we introduced the Internal Assessment (IA) to the grade 11s. Their IA will be a programmed solution to a problem that students find interesting to themselves or to someone else.

Grade 12: Predicted marks that students were awarded after this set of exams were in line with what they had achieved after 18 months of DP computer science. After reviewing the results of the exams, we continued working on Topic 3 – Networks.

Mathematics Highlights

CISH

Grade 6 students focused on preparing for their "Constructing the World" Unit 3 test. They enhanced their understanding of geometric properties by studying angles, sides, and diagonals in a variety of quadrilaterals, including squares, rectangles, rhombuses, parallelograms, trapezoids, kites, and arrowheads. By applying properties of triangles, they were able to classify these quadrilaterals based on their geometric features and successfully derived the formula for calculating the sum of interior angles in any n-sided polygon.

Grade 7

Grade 7 started our new unit on Probability. We started by exploring expectation and how close predictions can be in reality for different sample sizes. The students have been given a diagram toolkit this week: we have learned about Sample Space Venn Diagrams, Tree Diagrams and Sample Space Tables. We have talked about simple and compound probabilities. The students calculated Binomial probabilities using Tree Diagrams. We explored questions with unintuitive statements such as ‘From 64 people interviewed, 50 of them have a cat and 50 of them have a dog’ and ‘Why does the probability of flipping one head from two flips of a coin decrease when the coin is weighted so there is a 60% chance of flipping a head every time?’

Grade 8

Grade 8 students engaged in the study of solving quadratic equations through various methods of factorization. Their exploration covered a wide range of techniques such as the removal of common factors, factorization of the difference of two squares, perfect square factorization, handling expressions with four terms, quadratic trinomial factorization, and other miscellaneous factorization strategies. To make the learning more relatable and engaging, practical applications of quadratic equations in real-world situations were integrated into their curriculum.

Grade 9

Grade 9 students dedicated this week to expanding their understanding of function transformations. They honed their communication skills by explaining the different types of transformations to their classmates, as part of their preparation for a presentation scheduled for next week. This exercise not only reinforced their comprehension of mathematical concepts but also emphasized the importance of effective communication in explaining complex ideas, a valuable skill in both academic and real-world settings.

Grade 10

In Grade 10, students embarked on an investigative project centered around the Möbius Strip, delving into the fascinating world of basic topology. This project challenged students to not only construct and examine the properties of a Möbius Strip but also to predict and reflect on its unique characteristics, such as its one-sidedness and non-orientability. The project served as an introduction to topological concepts and encouraged students to think critically and reflectively about mathematical phenomena that defy traditional geometric intuition. Through this hands-on and thought-provoking exploration, Grade 10 students gained valuable insights into the more abstract aspects of mathematics.

Grade 11

DP1 AA (Diploma Programme 1 Analysis and Approaches) students this week tackled the complexities of trigonometric equations. They delved into understanding and solving various trigonometric equations, with a particular emphasis on using the integer 'k' notation to represent all real solutions. This method involves generalizing the solutions of trigonometric equations by incorporating 'k', an integer, to express multiple angles that satisfy the given equation. This approach not only helps in finding all possible solutions but also enhances the students' ability to comprehend and apply trigonometric concepts in a broader context. The DP1 AA students' engagement with these advanced mathematical concepts marks a significant step in their exploration of higher-level mathematics.

In Grade DP1 AI, we started the week with a general calculus review before diving back in to the complex world of advanced integration. We studied solids of revolution and kinematics this week. The students were also given time to look through their tests and pick out their areas of weakness.

Grade 12

DP2 AA (Diploma Programme 2 Analysis and Approaches) students spent this week reviewing strategies for their upcoming midterm mock examinations. They particularly focused on Maclaurin Series and normal distribution functions, two crucial areas in advanced mathematics. The students revisited the Maclaurin Series, delving into its applications and understanding its significance in calculus. Alongside this, they concentrated on mastering normal distribution functions, a key component in statistics. These review sessions are designed to reinforce their understanding and equip them with effective strategies to approach complex problems, ensuring they are well-prepared for their mock exams and beyond.

In Grade DP2 AI, the students were given some time to work on their Internal Assessments. We also had a look at their tests and compared them to the marking scheme to find areas they can improve on for future tests. In Grade 12, the students also picked up where they left off with integration, practicing using the reverse chain rule and learning about solids of revolution.

In Chess Club this week, I gave the students a brief lecture on endgames. We looked at a few different techniques for converting a winning position in endgames to actual wins. After that, the students used their newfound knowledge by playing several games against each other.
