Pre-K (Evan Kirby)

This week in Pre-K we are creating miniature pig sculptures as well as painting pigs and learning how to make the color pink. Sculpting with play dough improves fine and gross motor skills as well as familiarizes them with basic hand building techniques such as coil making and ball rolling. Great job team!

K3 (Evan Kirby)

This week the students are finishing their Matisse paper painting projects and beginning to use the skills they learned to create works from their own imaginations. I am really impressed with their ability to take images from their mind and create them with the  collage techniques they learned. Great work everyone!

Students are filming their stop-motion animations this week. As all the elements are coming together to create a movie production, students are learning the fundamentals of stop-motion animation on the iPads as well as learning how to collaborate in their groups during the filming process.

Grade 5 (Katija Bogdanic)

We are in our final week of our quilted landscapes and the results are exciting. Students are adding their final details and are being mindful of craftsmanship. Next week we will engage in a gallery walk and self-assessment.

Grade 6 (Roxane Joubert)

The Grade 6 Visual Arts students continued working on their mini clay microcosms. The aim of this project was to practice their effective modeling of clay with emphasis on texture, pattern, scale differences, and proportions related to macro- and microphotography. Some students have started adding colour to their artworks, experimenting with gloss and matte paints to enhance visual interest.

Grade 7 (Roxane Joubert)

This week, the Grade 7’s continued investigating practical animal anatomy. This step-by-step IDU prepares students for their upcoming field trip to the Hefei Aquarium. During a two-part guided demonstration, we used art-specific terminology and practicing using our listening and observational skills. Additionally, some students spent time practicing their drawing skills whilst other simply perfected their own unique drawing styles and techniques.

Grade 8 (Roxane Joubert)

Our Grade 8’s are forging ahead with their one-point perspective drawings. Having invested time and effort to accurately plot orthogonal guidelines, vanishing points and other objects outlined in the unit brief, our students can now proceed to add the smaller details. We intend to enhance our drawings with subtle shading techniques and using colour in a carefully considered and sensible way.

Grade 9 (Lucian Stefanescu)

A relatively new medium similar with woodblock printing technique, linocut appeared in the contemporary art world as an established professional print medium at the beginning of twentieth century, promoted by artists like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Linocut is a type of relief printing technique in which an image is carved into a block of linoleum, then ink is rolled onto the uncut surface, paper is placed on top of the block and, finally, pressure is applied to produce the print. During this unit, students will be guided through historical, cultural and conceptual aspects of printmaking with a focus on linocut printing technique.

This week, Grade 9 students continued printing their final series of prints.

Grade 10 (Lucian Stefanescu)

Drypoint is an engraving method in which the design to be printed is scratched directly into a copperplate with a sharply pointed instrument. Lines in a drypoint print are characterized by a soft fuzziness caused by ink printed from a burr, a rough ridge of metal thrown up on each side of the furrow of the drypoint line. Drypoint is most often used together with other printmaking techniques like monoprint or monotype in which the image created can only made once. This allows for more unique creations, but with more flexibility, as a combination of monoprinting techniques including printing, drawing, and painting can be used. During this unit, class activities will give students an opportunity to practice art fundamentals while learning technical skills in printmaking.

This week, Grade 10 students continued working on their monoprints.

Music Class

Pre-K (Darren Bayotlang)

What fun music classes with Pre-K students! We discovered a new song called "There Was a Shark" and had a blast creating new movements to go along with it. The student showed their amazing ability to move and follow the beat of music. It was a joy to see their enthusiasm and their smiles as they danced and grooved to the catchy tune.

K1 (Darren Bayotlang)

We had a fantastic music lesson this week with the K1 students! We explored the exciting song "Five Little Penguins on the Ice" and focused on keeping the beat and expressing ourselves through the music. The students showed focus and cooperation as they played their instruments while counting along with the song. It was amazing to see their enthusiasm and how well they followed the beat.

K2 (Darren Bayotlang)

What exciting music activities with our K2 students! We had a great time exploring the musical piece "Vivaldi" and learning to match the loud and quiet parts of the music. The students were also thrilled to discover the African rhythm and greeting song "Babala Gumbala." Movements were added to the activities to help them continue developing their cooperation, focus, musical timing skills and awareness of other cultures and languages.

K3 (Darren Bayotlang)

What an exciting week of music we had with our talented K3 students! We enjoyed learning another fun song, "There is a Shark." The focus is on practicing singing on the pitch with Piano accompaniment, and the students are making great strides in their musical abilities. Also, the "Perky Penguin" movement activity helped them develop their attention and focus as they followed the movement suggested in the song.
