Grade 1

This week, in Grade 1, students explored the science behind urban planning by constructing scaled models of cities (urban, suburban, rural, and parks), applying their understanding of measurement and spatial geometry. Integrating scientific inquiry with mathematics, literacy, and Unit of Inquiry concepts, they created proportional representations based on their previous knowledge. Through the creative use of various materials, students engaged in building different places, making the learning experience both scientific and engaging.

Students learnt how modern scientific understanding has allowed us to discover more about the past. Students learnt how archaeologists use carbon dating and stratigraphy to determine the age of artefacts and fossils they discover.

The strange rocks of Huangshan are made up of various types of rocks, which are closely related to the geological activities of the Earth. 


This week, Grade 5 students learned about the lesson "The Destruction of the Old Summer Palace". This article not only tells the history and cultural value of the Old Summer Palace but also involves architecture and material science. Additionally, they discussed the impact of fire on buildings and how modern architecture prevents fires through the use of fire-resistant materials and designs.


This week, Grade 3 students learned about the lesson ‘The Old House That Will Never Fall Down’. They predicted the ending based on the text's title, illustrations and storyline. Through learning, students learned that it takes 21 days for a hen to hatch eggs. This detail not only increases the authenticity of the story, but also allows students to understand scientific knowledge. In addition, the text also describes the living habits of spiders. Spiders build webs to catch insects, which is one of the important ways they survive.

This week, Grade 3 and Grade 4 students learned how to scientifically separate and recycle garbage while learning to do housework, and understand the importance of garbage separation and recycling. Grade 5 and Grade 6 students continued their learning on the topic of charity sales. They were introduced to scientific learning methods such as the associative memory technique, which they employed to aid their memory of newly learned vocabulary and other knowledge.

The Library Club students were introduced to the fascinating genre of Science Fiction or better known as ‘Sci-Fi’. Students learnt about the basic elements of sci-fi and were able to see how it is used in the story of The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot - a sci-fi version of the very famous The Tree Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf.

Chinese Maths

Grade 6 learned about "Ratio" - understanding ratio, its meaning and the basic properties through an experiment using pigments to make coloured water.      

Grade 1 students reviewed their test papers, taking the opportunity to solidify their understanding of numbers 0-10 as well as addition and subtraction. They focussed on learning how to interpret the meaning of problems by looking at diagrams or given information to solve mathematical problems. They discussed the application of numbers in daily life, such as counting the number of pencils of different colours in the class or calculating the number of stickers each person receives to understand the importance of numbers and mathematical operations in the real world. 


Grade 2 students learned the six times table and distinguished between "finding the sum of several identical numbers" and "finding the sum of two numbers". They used their multiplication knowledge to solve practical problems, such as calculating the total number of people in 6 groups in the class or determining how many items can be stored in 6 boxes of the same size. We also discussed the application of multiplication in simple data collection and analysis, such as using multiplication to calculate the total quantity when counting the number of different types of stationery.

This week, students worked hard on their preparation for Sports Day.  Students practised dragon races, where students had to work together before coming to the realisation that, as a team, they had to run at the same rhythm to gain speed. Upper Primary students learnt the correct technique to throw a javelin. Students discovered that strength and power don't always result in a long throw, but more important is the angle of projection - too low or too high will result in a loss of distance.
