Nicotine Dependence

In today's teacher sharing, Mr. Takemoto, from the Japanese Program shared with us on the topic of Nicotine Dependence, translated by teacher Guo.

Mr. Takemoto graduated with a degree in physical health. From his knowledge of specialist subjects such as nutrition, public health and social psychology, using simple words and visual PowerPoint illustrations, Mr Takemoto clearly explained what nicotine is, how nicotine addiction develops, nicotine withdrawal syndrome and the dangers of nicotine to the human body.

Nicotine is a natural component found in the tobacco plant and a self-protection mechanism for the plant against pests and therefore contains toxicity. When a person smokes, nicotine is absorbed into the lungs and enters the brain in a matter of seconds, where it binds to receptors and produces dopamine; just like a key that unlocks pleasure.

But the pleasure this key unlocks is very short-lived and makes you want to keep going; when you stop, it brings on a bad 'withdrawal syndrome' of irritability, anxiety, low concentration, headaches, physical weakness and so on. This is why it is so difficult to quit smoking. A survey of 9,400 people in Japan showed that 43.1% of smokers thought about quitting immediately after they smoked the first cigarette, but only 27.8% of them eventually succeeded in smoking cessation.

Through sharing, Mr. Takemoto hopes that everyone will be fully aware of the highly addictive nature of nicotine in tobacco, which is far more harmful than we can imagine. The longer you smoke, the harder it is to quit, and the more likely you are to suffer from diseases. A survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan in 2010 even indicated a clear relationship between smoking rates and income: the lower the annual income, the higher the smoking rate.

Tomorrow is May 31st, the thirty-fifth World No Tobacco Day, of which the theme is "tobacco poisoning our planet".Tobacco can cause huge damages to the environment in the whole producing and consuming cycle, and e-cigarettes also pose threats on our surroundings. To protect our health and the earth we rely on altogether, let's say "NO" to tobacco.

Greenery on wheels

Under this poetic theme name, students Yuxuan Bai and Shuting Huang, from the Japanese Program, shared with us the topic of transportation and environment.

The two students started with the four types of transport that are typical of Japan: underground, train, taxi and bicycle. In particular, they mentioned that taxis in Japan are expensive, with a starting fare of 1 km in Tokyo equivalent to RMB 21, almost four times that of Shanghai; they are generally used in case of emergencies.

Bicycles are the most popular form of transport in Japan, with students, office workers and shoppers all choosing them as their means of transport. This is why Japan is known as the "Land of Bicycles".

High popularity of bicycles in Japan results from advocacy of "Green Commuting", which means a environment-friendly way to commute without  driving private cars. Afterwards, the two students introduced some campaigns carried out currently which aim to emit no greenhouse gases before the year 2050. Moreover, they also presented efforts and achievements from Chinese government, for example, new energy vehicle.

The shared content in both Chinese and Japanese with coherence, the exquisite powerpoint presentation with elaboration, and the detailed bibliography listed at last all testify to the students' concentrated attention to preparation. Their attitudes of dilligence and rigidity deserve praises.

"Greenery on wheels" -both bicycles and new energy vehicles are green ways to travel based on low energy consumption and low pollution.

As the two students stated at the end of their speech: "Planet Earth is our mother, who should not be of second importance." "Let's work hard for a more beautiful and comfortable world to live in".
