On top of the academic courses, SHBS also offers near 60 electives every semester to empower its students to expand their horizons, to better explore themselves, and find their passion.  

选修课大致分为：AMC、NEC、物理碗、ACSL（美国计算机科学联赛）、CTB（China Thniks Big）、机器人等学术竞赛类；插花、摄影、陶艺、厨艺等生活技能类；中国哲学、中国书画、中国舞等中国文化类；日语、法语、韩语、电影中的历史、小大不列颠等国际文化类；巴西柔术等体育类；公众演讲、剧本创作、电影拍摄、股票基金等职业技能类。

Our electives can be generally divided into the following categoris: academic contests and challenges like AMC, NEC, Physics Bowl, ACSL, CTB, and Robotics; Life skills like Flower Arrangement, Photography, Ceremics, Cooking; Chinese language and Culture courses like Chinese Philosophy, Chinese Calligraphy and Painting, and Chinese Dance; International Culture courses like Japanese, French, Korean, History in Films, and Little Great Britain; Sports like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu；Working skills like Public Speaking, Script Writing, Film Production, Funds and Stocks.

 Let's have a look at our Film Production elective today.

Our first lesson in film production began with an analysis of lighting in the classical art of the 17th century painter Rembrandt and a discussion of its adoption into the Hollywood cinematographers of Film noir. Students developed practical skills in film lighting theory, learning the importance of colour temperature, measuring the kelvin of various light sources and developing a technical understanding of CCT, RGB and HSI lighting systems. Through a series of film shots students learnt about the role of light in visual storytelling, its ability to reveal contextual clues, indicate mood shifts, demonstrate the internal conflicts of characters, the use of abnormal color changes suggesting moments of hallucinations, dreams, and past encounters and how to distinguish between expressionist and naturalistic lighting. Students specifically focused on three primary techniques of lighting commonly found in cinema: Rembrandt, Reverse key, and split (chiaroscuro) lighting. Lastly, a haze machine was used to create what is referred to as ‘volumetric lighting’ wherein light particles illuminate the haze creating shafts of light which facilitate the illusion of ‘volume’ and add texture to the image.

我们第一堂电影制作选修课从分析17世纪画家伦勃朗的古典艺术中的灯光开始，并讨论了灯光如何被好莱坞电影摄影师们运用于他们拍摄的黑色电影。同学们学习了电影中的灯光照明理论和实用技能，了解了色温的重要性，测量了各种光源的绝对温标，并在技术层面上了解了CCT, RGB和HSI照明系统。通过一系列电影镜头，同学们了解了光在视觉叙事中的作用，它有以下作用：揭示上下文线索，表明情绪的变化，展示人物的内心冲突，使用异常的颜色变化暗示幻觉、梦境和过去的遭遇，以及如何区分表现主义和自然主义的照明。学生们特别学习了电影中常见的三种主要照明技术:伦勃朗、反向键和明暗对比照明。最后，我们使用烟雾机来创造所谓的“体积光渲染”：光粒子照亮烟雾，创造出有利于“体积”错觉的一束束光线，并为图像添加质感。
