An interview with Season Xiang

问：你能谈谈在国际学校学习的感受吗？

Q:Could you share with us your experiences and thoughts of studying in an international school?

答：我从七年级开始进入体制外的学校。上一所国际学校的规模很大，也提供了各类学生活动，印象最深的是我得到了很多锻炼身体的机会。然而，人数过多，无法得到老师们足够的关注，而且自我展示的机会也有限。所以，我十年级转学到了宏润博源学校。真的很庆幸那时做了这个决定。对我来说，体制内和体制外的最大区别是在课程体系以及自我探索方面。国际学校的课程体系相对体制内学校的课程丰富，给予我们很多选择的空间和自由。对于我这样一位学业资质平庸，并没有擅长的学科的同学来说，想要在竞争激烈的体制内学校脱颖而出，实在是难于上青天。好在国际学校在课程设置方面给了我扬⻓避短的机会，允许我向着自己感兴趣的方面发展。同时，我也会结合老师们和同学们的建议，通过学期初的“试课”，调整课程难度，选择出最适合自己的课表。

A:I started attending private schools when I was a 7th grader. The previous international school I had attended was a big one, which had also organized various activities. What impressed me most was that I got many opportunities to do physical exercises. However, there were far too many students in that school for me to get enough attention from the teachers, and the opportunities for me to present myself were limited. So, I transferred to Hongrun Boyuan School in Grade 10.  I'm really glad I made that decision.  For me, the biggest difference between public and international schools lie in their curriculum and self-exploration. The curriculum system offered by international schools is relatively richer than that offered by public schools, widening our options and giving us a lot of choices. For a student like me, who had mediocre academic performances and was not good at any subject, it was extremely difficult to stand out in the highly competitive public schools.  Fortunately, the international school curriculum system has enabled me to develop in the field I am interested in by giving full play to my strengths and avoiding my weaknesses.  At the same time, I could adjust the difficult level of my courses and choose the schedule that suited me most according to the suggestions made by teachers and students through the "trial course" at the beginning of the semester.  

此外，学校有丰富的学生活动，让我拥有各类机会去探索自己的潜能和热忱。回想我刚进国际高中那会儿，看到身边好多朋友都兴致勃勃地成立自己的社团或加入社团，我感到特别茫然，不知道自己喜欢什么，擅长什么，能做什么。所幸我接触到流行舞蹈，然后就沉迷其中。舞蹈成为我高中繁忙学业生涯的一个小窗口，在舞蹈房里挥洒汗水，释放了我的压力，也找到一群志同道合的朋友。在过去两年，我也一直担任学校舞蹈社社长。小到迎新会，大到毕业典礼，我们的舞蹈社团从不缺席。社团激发了我的领导力，提升了我的责任感和执行力，让我学会了提前做好排练规划，协调场地及人员，知道如何去带领大家一起完成一场场表演。作为一个负责人，我必须考虑到方方面面，最后才可以呈现一个优质的作品。

In addition, the school offers a variety of student activities, providing me with various opportunities to explore my potential and enthusiasm. Seeing that many friends around me enthusiastically founded their own clubs or joined them when I was just admitted to this international school, I felt at a loss as to what I liked, what I was good at and what I could do.  Fortunately, I was introduced to popular dance and became fascinated by it.  Dancing became a small relaxation window of my busy academic life in high school years. Sweating in the dance room helped relieve my pressure, and also helped me find a group of like-minded friends.  In the past two years, I have also been the leader of the school dance club. Our club members can always be found performing on the stage in the auditorium for events ranging from "Celebrate the New" to Commencement. Club activities have cultivated my leadership skills, enhanced my sense of responsibility and executive ability, taught me how to make rehearsal planning in advance, coordinate places and members, and how to push everyone to complete one performance after another.  As a club leader, I have to take all aspects into consideration before we can finally present a good performance to the audience.  

问：你是如何确定自己想要申请的大学专业呢？能否给学弟学妹们一些建议？

Q: How did you decide on your future major and dream university? Could you give the juniors some suggestions with regard to that?

答：一次偶然机会，我发现自己对传媒很感兴趣。我从小学的时候就很喜欢写文章，平时也会写日记抒发自己的心情，记录日常美好或沮丧的时刻。真正注意到传媒是从一个叫“3号厅检票员工”的微信公众号，其主要内容是电影赏析评论，其中一个栏目是安利一些被埋没的小众电影。从这个栏目中我看到了宣传的力量。第一次觉得媒体宣传在生活中的积极作用。如果没有这个栏目，我根本不知道还有那么多精彩的电影。其次，学校里曾经邀请过一位记者来做讲座。她让我了解到记者每次采访前的准备，以及采访后的总结及报告，更加明白了记者这个职业以及其在传媒中的作用。

A: Accidentally, I found my interest in media. I have been fond of writing since I was in primary school. I also keep a diary to express my mood, or record the good or sad moments in my daily life.  A wechat public account named "Ticket Inspector of Hall 3" aroused my interest in media for the first time. It was mainly about how to appreciate movies, and one of its columns was to recommend some good but not well-known movies . By reading this column I realized the power of media. For the first time, I felt that media play a positive role in my life.  Without this program, I would have had no idea that there were so many wonderful movies out there.  Secondly, the school once invited a journalist to give us a lecture. From her, I learned how reporters prepared for each interview, and how they made a summary and wrote a report after the interview. Thus, I have a deeper understanding of the profession of journalist and the role it plays in media.  

我想跟学弟学妹说一声，虽然申请季很煎熬很痛苦，但真的不能焦急，不能人云亦云。只有花时间去认识自我，明白自己想要什么，你才会更有目标感和行动力，你的付出才有价值。我一直深信这句话，“我们越是了解自己，就越能活成自己想要的样子。”

What I would like to say to juniors is that although surviving the application season is very difficult and painful, there is no need to be anxious and do not follow what others say. Only by taking time to understand yourself and what you want will you have a greater sense of purpose, motivation, and will the efforts you’ve made be more valuable.  I've always believed in the saying, "The more we know about ourselves, the more we can live the way we want to live."  

问：可以分享你的申请经历吗？

Q: Could you share your experience in college application？

答：学校有非常完善的升学体系也不断地提供所需的资源。无论是每学年的目标教育和职业月探索，还是常规的升学活动，大学讲座及升学咨询，都让我慢慢地了解自己的兴趣，探索未来的方向，也让我更加了解大学。

A:The school has a sound system of college counseling and constantly provides us with necessary resources. Whether by participating in the goal-setting and career exploring activities organized in each academic year, or attending the regular counseling activities, lectures and consultation given by universities, I came to realize my interest, explore my future development, and know more about universities.  

我觉得一个人的成就离不开环境。不知不觉，我已经在宏润博源度过两年。它给我带来了巨大的变化。它让我学会如何自主学习，学会如何做好时间管理，让我有机会遇见高中的自己，认识自己，了解自己的兴趣爱好并深入探索，也塑造了我的思想。除此之外，在我背后的家人带给的不仅仅是经济上的支持，更是精神上的支持。“人可以不聪明，可以落在起跑线，但笨鸟要先飞”，这是爸妈在我最低谷的时候跟我说的。他们总让我放宽心，人只跟自己比，每天进步就行。周围有着很多厉害的学霸们，即便我整个高中时期都赶不上他们，但我多努力努力，今天的自己比昨天的自己做得更好，一点点达到自己的预期，这也就可以了。我也很感谢我的校外升学指导老师，她在暑假时带我做了个小项目，让我明白我为何更合适加拿大的大学。我也从茫茫信息中学会提取重点信息并整合，慢慢地学会从不同的角度去思考问题。

I think one's achievement depends on the environment he or she lives in. How time flies! I have spent two years in SHBS. It has changed me greatly.  It has taught me how to study independently and how to manage my time well. It also gave me the opportunity to meet myself in high school, understand myself, my interests and hobbies and explore them deeply. It has also shaped my thoughts. In addition, my family have provided me with not only financial but also spiritual support.  " A kid may not be smart enough, may fall behind at the starting line, but remember that an early bird catches the worm", this is what my parents often encouraged me with when I was frustrated. They told me not to get anxious and to constantly improve myself.   There were many outstanding students around me. Even though I could not catch up with them in high school years, I would succeed if I kept improving myself day by day and kept achieving my goals.  I am also grateful to my off-campus college advisor, who helped me do a small project during the summer vacation so that I found out why it was better for me to apply for a Canadian university. I also learned how to extract and integrate key information,  and how to think about problems from different perspectives.

Finally, I hope all SHBS students will succeed in getting into their dream college or university.
