Nowadays,
how do our children get to
know and feel the Chinese New Year?
At BMH Pre School, each festival is an important opportunity for the children to learn about the culture. As the Chinese New Year approaches, each classroom is experiencing a variety of festive activities planned by the teachers.
The traditional Chinese New Year customs of writing Chinese New Year scrolls, sticking "福" characters and cutting out window flowers are experienced by the children. The auspicious red colours and traditional Chinese calligraphy warmed up the festive atmosphere.
Lunar New Year flowers, red envelopes, firecrackers and rabbit lanterns ...... All handmade by the children themselves!
In addition, the children also learn about the Chinese zodiac and rituals in library lessons and Chinese lessons, all of which will help them to understand their own identity and their ethnicity and country.
The MH Maker adjacent to the BMH provides our children with more opportunities to explore. For the last New Year's event of the term, we invited all parents and children to join us.
We experienced the lively atmosphere of Chinese New Year and gave our children more fresh and interesting folk craft experiences in a number of folk craft activities.
Our Chinese and expatriate teachers kicked off the event with a joint 'dragon' dance, where the children's handmade dragons won a round of applause. We also invited parents to draw the dragon eyes, a traditional Chinese custom that added to the fun of the fair.
Painted woodchip painting, movable character printing, New Year paper cutting, botanical dyeing and soft pottery making ...... These craft activities allow each child and parent to enjoy a wonderful bonding time together and work together on pieces.
The greatest meaning of Chinese New Year to us is "reunion", and we were most happy when the BMH community gathered at this New Year event.
