Each student is different and have their own unique learning style on their path to academic mastery. Our Grade 5 teacher, Mr. Tim, has created a classroom environment where individual needs and teaching methods meet to achieve individual success.

每个学生都是不同的,他们求学之路会有自己独特的学习风格。而深美国际学校5年级 Tim 老师创造了一个满足学生个人需求和教学课堂环境,在这样的环境中,更容易帮助实现学生的个人成功。


In Mathematics, Mr Tim has identified the methods of learning that are unique to each student. Although the methods may be individual the common result is a heightened understanding and love for the subject. Some respond well to workbooks, others use online aids and some work better with physical manipulatives such as currency and blocks to represent numbers. This has led to some students achieving a first ‘win’ in math because they have discovered a method that allows them to succeed.

Every child can do math and every child can achieve in math. By discovering the method that works best with each individual it allows them to build a connection to math as a practical element of their life as well as building their self-esteem. Currently the class is learning proper place values and decimal usage in addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. From here we will use these foundational skills to begin multi-step problem solving.

每个孩子都可以做数学,每个孩子都能在数学上取得成就。通过发现最适合每个人的方法,它使他们能够与数学建立联系,将其作为生活中的一个实用元素,并建立他们的自尊。目前,该班正在学习正确的位值和小数用法以及加减乘除法。从这里开始,我们将使用这些基础技能开始多步骤解决问题。

Mr Tim has created a space in the classroom dominated by a tree with lights, a comfortable carpet and stuffed animal toys. This reading corner is designed to provide a‘safe’space where they can explore their imagination and challenge themselves as readers. The outside world is suspended as students become knights or princesses or astronauts as they take advantage of the hundreds of books specifically chosen for their individual reading levels and needs.

Grade 5 is currently working on two major literacy lessons critical for their future success. The first is educating them on reading comprehension where they understand that simply reading written materials is not enough. The aim is to fully understand the purpose, intention, message, and audience of any written work whether fiction or non-fiction. Mr Tim is proud of the progress his students have made as readers and expects this success to continue throughout the year. Soon we will be learning how to make full literary reviews and discussions of novels.

The class has just completed twenty days of Readers and Writers Workshop, a curriculum designed to teach each child not only be a lifelong reader and consumer of books but to be a producer of written material which they can turn into their own stories.

Project Based Learning

Project Based Learning:  An educational tradition firmly rooted in real world projects is an integral part of SAIS education culture. You’ll find it nowhere more obvious than in the fifth grade! Projects are the most “fun” part of the handcrafted curriculum we design for each individual learner, but these projects must be practical educational tools where students develop real-world skills. Mr Tim currently has students discovering talents they never imagined!

The class are currently concluding a module on the medieval ages of knights, crusades and empires around the world. Rather than center our curriculum around the western viewpoint, we have included history from several nations to give these 21st century learners and global citizens a truly well-rounded view of history from many international perspectives which we believe should be a critical feature of an international education.

We’re urrently displaying several handcrafted projects representing famous inventions throughout the Middle Ages. Under the expert tutelage of our maker Space faculty, each child has constructed designs according to their own ability level and learning needs. You’ll see inventions featured from several countries along with colorful and informative posters that describe each learner’s process of creation!

Shortly students will produce medieval costumes as well as the re-creation of a Middle Ages feast where they will actually prepare, cook and enjoy some signature food from around the world from this period. Why food? Through recent years and developments in teaching, we’ve discovered that learners respond best to a multi-sensory environment where taste, smell and touch dramatically increase their growth as students. As a Project Based Learning school, we’re thrilled to incorporate these recent breakthroughs into our instructional methods!

The class will be moving on to robotics after the current project periods! One major similarity between these incredible fifth grade children is that they all love to build! A key to engaging happy students is to provide curriculum that they actually connect with and this project comes as a result of providing each child with voice and choice in their educational journey.

Mr Tim commented: ‘I’m proud to serve as their homeroom teacher which means not only functioning as an academic instructor but also as a holistic focused influence in their life providing guidance and support in their general day to day activities. On a daily basis, this can take the form of individually counseling a child or giving advice on critical topics in their young lives. This window of time every day provides each learner the opportunity to speak with me individually as a trusted resource working in partnership with their parents at home.

This critical relationship enables me to help students develop not only as learners but as human beings becoming global citizens and well-rounded individuals who seek to truly make a difference in the world.
