News in SAIS!

We at SAIS are very proud and excited to announce that we are now an Advanced Placement (AP) school with the program beginning this year!

What is the AP or Advanced Placement program at SAIS?

Advanced Placement is a program run by the College Board (the makers of the SAT) that allows students to take special high school courses that can earn college credits and/or qualify the student for more advanced classes when beginning college. Who doesn’t want early college credits for themselves or their student? Did you know some AP students are able to skip the time and cost for their entire first year of college? This is a fact!

AP classes are designed to give students the experience of an introductory-level college class while they’re still in high schoolPlus, students can get college credit for the class if they pass the AP exam.

Advanced Placement classes have college level AP exams every May at SAIS!

These tests are college-level exams on the specific subjects taught and are given in May upon the completion of an AP course taken at SAIS. Students getting a high enough score can earn college credit for that course at many colleges and universities! Getting early college credits can also mean lower costs for college tuition as fewer classes on the college campus will be required!

What do the AP exams test and how are they socred?

AP exams can cover any of 38 different topics depending on the courses offered each year at SAIS. These exams are scored on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the highest. A 4 is generally required in order to be considered for college credit. The scores for these tests are released every year in July!

Do AP classes or the scores help college admission?

AP classes look fantastic to college recruiters on an application because they show that the student can handle the coursework of a university. The scores themselves aren’t as important for admission purposes but they do matter if you want those courses to be considered for early college credits! Remember that you generally need a 4 out of 5 or higher for credit at colleges!

What AP classes are we offering this year?

AP Human Geography

AP Human Geography is an introductory college-level human geography course. Students cultivate their understanding of human geography through data and geographic analyses as they explore topics like patterns and spatial organization, human impacts and interactions with their environment, and spatial processes and societal changes.

AP Environmental Science

Explore and investigate the interrelationships of the natural world and analyze environmental problems, both natural and human-made. You’ll take part in laboratory investigations and field work.

SAIS

Why are AP classes at SAIS SO important?

Taking AP can help you get familiar with college-level work and boost your confidence by tackling it. Time management, critical thinking, scholarly writing—AP courses help you hone the skills you’ll need in college and career. Studying a subject in depth could give you new insights and even put you on the path to a career. Don’t forget that you can earn early college credits!

SAIS

The AP program is different from the

International Baccalaureate (IB)

While both AP and IB programs offer challenging courses to high school students for college credit, they have some substantial differences.

The AP program was specifically developed to help high school students prepare for college. The IB program was developed so that students could have an internationally recognized high school diploma. AP courses are typically less expensive than IB courses. As well, many more students worldwide take AP courses every year than those provided by the IB.

Additionally, most colleges offer AP credit for some courses but far fewer offer credit for the IB courses worldwide. The AP program substantially increases the likelihood that your student can get early college credit saving valuable time and money.

The reason more colleges accept AP classes for college credit is simple. AP classes and exams test specific knowledge in subjects that are directly comparable to what a student will study at a college campus. The IB program prepares a student for college but is more generalized in study and is much more difficult to directly compare to college level courses.

SAIS

What do colleges think of IB and AP?

As it turns out, colleges don't automatically consider AP or IB harder or more impressive on a transcript. Since IB is a rarer program, they can't penalize students for not taking it. Plus, there are huge differences in how both AP and IB courses are taught and graded at high schools across the country.

Because of the differences in IB/AP course grading, colleges—especially the most selective ones—just want to see that you have taken the most challenging course load available at your school. So instead of worrying about AP versus IB, you should worry about taking the most rigorous classes your high school offers.

For example, Princeton says on its admissions website, "Whenever you can, challenge yourself with the most rigorous courses possible, such as honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and dual-enrollment courses. We will evaluate the International Baccalaureate (IB), A-levels, or another diploma in the context of the program's curriculum" (bold emphasis mine).

SAIS

What are the benefits of taking AP classes?

AP classes can play a significant role in the college admissions process. If you're planning to go to college and your high school offers AP classes, you should take advantage of the opportunity. The successful completion of Advanced Placement classes has benefits during both the college application process and undergraduate life. Below are six of the biggest perks to taking AP classes.

AP Classes Impress College Admission Couselors

At nearly every college in the country, your academic record is the most important part of your college application. The folks in the admissions office want to see that you've taken the most challenging courses available to you. Success in difficult courses is the surest sign of your preparedness for college. The most challenging courses, of course, are college-level courses such as Advanced Placement.

A work of warning here:

The admissions office will not be impressed if you overwhelm yourself with too many AP classes and your grades suffer as a result.

News in SAIS!

SAIS

SAIS
