在加入国王之前,Martin副校长曾担任过深圳国际交流学院(深国交)的学术副校长,主要负责 A Level考点筹建及考官培训、优化及支持牛剑项目、CIS (Cathaypath Institute of Science)科研项目评估员培训等重要工作;Martin副校长曾培养出众多牛津、剑桥、常春藤等世界名校学子,有着丰富的名校申请经验;同时还是剑桥国际教育评估委员会认证的教师培训师,能够促进其他教师技能和实践能力的提升,提高教学团队整体实力。

国王中小学将于今年秋季迎来首批学生,Martin先生也将带着丰富的教学经验和新颖的项目思路来到国王。我们特地对即将上任的学术副校长进行了专访,来聆听他讲述自己的教育情怀、理念,以及大家最关心的Martin先生将给国王带来什么?

您为什么选择从事教育行业?

最初,我在产业界工作过5年。那时,我刚刚组建家庭,工作日用于陪伴家人的时间非常少。与此同时,我所在的公司也缩小了规模,因此我决定转行从事教育行业。我的一位密友总是说我会成为一名好老师,事实证明,他是对的。

| 您为什么来到中国教书?

2014年,我在英国工作了16年后,第一次来到中国。那个时候,我在一所杰出的学院——肯尼特学校担任部门主任。因为孩子们已经长大成人,我认为自己可以四处去旅行了,因此我决定加入到国际学校工作。一到中国,我就被迷住了,再也没有离开。

| 您之前从深圳去往苏州工作了,现在为什么选择回到深圳?

我的第一所国际学校是在深圳国际交流学院,一开始在那里,我只是一名普通的教师,但很快被提升为部门主任,然后成为学术副校长。在深国交任职期间,我认识了我的第二任妻子蔡小姐。她来自深圳,我们在这个城市有很多家人。当我决定离开去其他城市的国际学校获得更多的经验时,我总是想回到深圳。

| 您有哪些兴趣和爱好?

我的爱好和兴趣是烹饪、阅读和游泳。我喜欢为家人做饭,并向他们推荐我最喜欢的菜肴。读书既是为了消遣,也是为了更新学科知识和获取最新教育动向,游泳则是为了保持健康。

| 在您看来,一所好的国际学校应该是什么样的?

一所好的国际学校要有明确的目标和方向,它是由了解国际教育和遵从教育基本原则的人来领导的。需要以学术卓越为核心支持学生成为全球公民。它还需要与当地社区以及全球网络建立良好的伙伴关系。


一所优秀的国际学校也应该有优秀的教师团队和设施,为学生提供支持和发展机会。最后,一所伟大的国际学校有着悠久的历史,它拥有均衡的课程把学生作为一个独立又完整的个体来发展,使他们准备好迎接不断变化的世界。

| 您的教学理念是什么?

我的教学理念植根于我的教学实践中。我认为学习不仅来自于书本知识,也来自学习如何思考,因此我鼓励学生积极参与到我的教学活动中。我鼓励学生敢于冒险勇于探索,并能以开放的方式交流想法。我希望我的学生能够很好地平衡和反思,能够跳出简单的现象去思考,这样他们就能够以创造性的思维应用他们所学习的技能和知识。

| 针对中国学生而言,英式教育体系和教学方法有什么特别之处?

英式教育体系是世界上最古老的教育体系之一。它致力于在学生掌握所学知识的基础上发展学生潜能,同时注重发展学生更高阶的思维能力,以应对未来的学习。


英式教育制度鼓励学生对概念有深入的理解,从而将学科的不同方面联系起来;还注重培养学生的批判性思维、解决问题、独立研究、合作和阐释观点等方面的能力。这种教育体系开发了学生可迁移的技能,将能让学生受益一生,并让学生为未来做准备,让学习变得愉快和有益。

| 您认为制定高标准以使学生成功和成长的关键是什么?

建立高标准所必需的是:注重团队合作和教师发展


对教师来说,通过培训和合作可以不断提高他们的技能和理解力。同样重要的是,要确保所开发的课程是为学生带来最佳成果、发展技能和加深理解的,以确保学生成为终身学习者。

| 您曾担任深国交的学术副校长,能分享一下如何在深圳经营一所优秀的学校吗?

作为深国交的前学术副校长,我认为学生成功最重要的特点是明确关注每个学生及他们的个体目标,并支持他们实现这些目标。要经营一所优秀的学校,最重要的是要有能全面发展学生的好老师,鼓励学生发展那些能让他们成功的关键技能,并支持学生作为潜能无限的年轻人来发展。当学生们未来接受高等教育时,他们就很容易获得成功。

| 作为领导团队的一员,您的主要成就是什么?

作为一名学术校长,我取得过很多成就,很难选择其中几项来细说。就我个人而言,我最开心的事情是成为剑桥国际教育评估委员会认证的教师培训师。这帮助我在工作过的每一所学校成为"教师培训的领导者"。拓展教师的技能和实践,提高教学团队整体教学能力是我很擅长的部分。

我希望支持学校的教师发展,争取让整体教师的教学能力达到最高水平;并支持学校的设施发展,让国王学校成为深圳最好的学校之一。同时,我能为初、高中学生的未来发展提供很多支持,帮助他们在未来升学等方面把握住最佳的发展机会。

King's Prep and Senior School will open in Autumn 2022 and will welcome Mr. Martin Cole as Deputy Head for Academic. Mr. Cole has excellent academic ability and rich teaching experience. Mr. Martin was the Academic Principal of Shenzhen College of International Education, mainly responsible for many important teaching-related tasks. He is currently the Academic Principal of Adcote School (Suzhou), and was recognized as the "favourite foreign teacher" by the students.

A well structured curriculum that offers breadth and depth is the cornerstone of KSS to cultivate outstanding students; for this we need a strong academic faculty team. Nearly 90% of the teaching staff at King's Prep and Senior School will be British or Irish. All teachers have graduated from excellent universities and have an average of 11 years teaching experience. Mr. Cole will join our Prep School team to develop our curriculum and oversee the teaching & learning, ensuring students have a full and challenging education which sets them up for our Senior School and gives them a foundation for the prestigious universities in the world.

As Academic Principal of Shenzhen College of International Education, Mr. Cole had responsibility for the preparation of A Level examinations and the training of teachers to be examiners; he developed and supported the Oxford and Cambridge entrance procedures, and the training of assessors for the CIS (Cathaypath Institute of Science) scientific research projects. He has helped many students to go to University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Ivy League and other prestigious universities in the world. In addition, Mr. Cole is an accredited Cambridge Assessment International Education teacher trainer, this has helped him to develop teachging skills and practice so as to enhance the reaching and learning of the whole teaching faculty.

King's Prep and Senior School will welcome its first batch of students this autumn, and Mr. Cole will bring his rich teaching experience and innovative project ideas to KSS. We specifically interviewed Mr. Cole, the incoming Deputy Head for Academic, and invited him to share his thoughts and ideas about education, as well as what he will bring to the KSS.

About Martin Cole


Q1 | Why did you choose teaching as your career? 

I took up teaching after working 5 years in industry. I had a young family at the time and during the week I did not get much time to see them. At the same time the company I was in was becoming smaller, so I took the decision to take up teaching. A close family friend had always said I would make a good teacher and it looks like they were right.

Q2 | Could you tell us how you came to teach in China?

I came to China after 16 years working in the UK in 2014. I was the head of department of an outstanding academy called the Kennet Academy and had always thought I would be able to travel. My children had grown up and no longer needed me, so I took the decision to apply to international schools. Once I arrived in China I was hooked.

Q3 | You have worked in Shenzhen before, why do you want to return? 

My first school internationally was  the Shenzhen College of International Education (SCIE) in Shenzhen where I started out as just an ordinary teacher but was quickly promoted to head of department and then to become the Academic Deputy Principal. During my time in Shenzhen at SCIE, I met and married my second wife, Ms. Cai. She is from Shenzhen, and we have lots of family in the city and, although I decided to leave to get additional experience in other international schools, I was always going to return to the city.

Q4 | Tell us your hobbies and interests. 

My hobbies and interests are cooking, reading and swimming. I like to cook for my wife’s family and introduce them to some of my favourite dishes. They also like the things I make and tell me they are very delicious. I read both for pleasure and to keep up my knowledge of both my subject and the latest in education. I swim to keep fit.

About Education


Q5 | What in your opinion makes a good international school today?

A good international schoolhas a clear purpose and direction. It is led by people who understand international education and embrace the main principles. It needs to hold academic excellence at its core, supporting its students to become global citizens. It also needs to have great partnerships with the local community as well as with global international networks. 


A great international school also has an excellent faculty and facilities to provide students with the support and development opportunities for success. Finally, a great international school has a great history with balanced programmes that develop the student as a whole person so that they are fully prepared for the ever-changing world.

Q6 | Could you tell us more of your teaching philosophy? 

My teaching philosophy is grounded in my practice. I want students to be engaged in my lessons and realise that success comes not only from learning the content but also learning how to think, to take a risk, be enquiring and be able to communicate ideas in an open-minded way. I want my students to be well-balanced and reflective as well as being able to think outside the simple facts so that they can to apply their skills and knowledge in inventive ways.

Q7 | What are the aspects of the British education system and teaching methods that you see more beneficial to Chinese children in particular, over other education systems?

The British education system is one of the oldest systems in the world. It is designed to develop the student mastery of the subjects they study but also to help to the develop higher order thinking skills for further study in the future. 


The British education system encourages student to develop a deep the conceptual understanding needed to make links between different aspects of the subject. It also encourages critical thinking, problem solving, independent research skills, collaboration and presenting arguments. It also develops transferable skills that will last a lifetime preparing students for the future, making learning enjoyable and rewarding.


Q8| What do you see as essential in developing high standards which enable students to succeed and to grow?

The essential things needed to develop high standards are focused on teamwork and teacher development


It's important for teachers to keep developing their skills and understanding through training and collaboration. It is also essential to ensure that the programmes that are developed are designed to bring the best outcomes for students. Developing the skills and understanding that will ensure they become lifelong learners.

Q9 | You were Academic Principal of Shenzhen College of International Education. Can you share some of your observations about what it takes a run a high-performing school in Shenzhen?

As Academic Principal of Shenzhen College of International Education the most important feature for student success is for them to have a clear focus on the goals they wish to achieve and then providing them with the support to help achieve those goals. It is important to have good teachers who develop the student holistically. Encouraging those key skills that ensure a student success as well as supporting students to develop as young people so that once they move on to further education, they can be successful.


Q10| What qualities does a good teacher need to have?

The qualities of a good teacher are that they are caring, progressive, patient, passionate, engaging, organised, flexible, inspiring, and enthusiastic.

Q11 | What have been your main achievements as a member of leadership teams? 

As an academic principal I have so many achievements that it’s hard to choose a few to talk about. Personally, the thing I'm most happy with was becoming an accredited Cambridge Assessment International Education teacher trainer. This has helped me to be the leader for teacher training in every school where I have worked, thereby helping teachers to develop skills and practice which enhances the teaching and learning of the whole teaching faculty.

Q12 | What attracted you to KSS?

I was attracted to KSS as it is a new school that will allow me to develop all the programmes instead of trying to adjust things that are already in place. I also really like Dr Zhou and I think we would make a great team.

Q13 | How would you apply your previous experience to achieve KSS' VISION? 

I have been asked to support the school in the development of the teachers to the highest standards as well as supporting the development of the facilities to ensure that KSS is one of the best schools in Shenzhen. I can support the development of both the Prep and Senior schools so that students get the best opportunities for the future.
