The internet is a huge part of our daily lives, whether at school, home, work or travelling. It can be a wonderful place full of social connection and vast amounts of useful information at our fingertips.

There are, however, certain risks that come with surfing the net and at BMH we take the safety of our students – both offline and online – seriously.

The BMH Information Technology curriculum covers a plethora of online safety topics from learning how to make healthy media choices to understanding how our online activity creates our digital footprint and identity.

In various other lessons students use school and personal iPads for research, translation support and even video editing activities. BMH teachers are always vigilant with online activity during class and all students require parental consent to bring their personal device into school. Devices must be kept in the homeroom when they’re not being used under supervision in class.

So what can you do at home to ensure the safety your children online? The first step is to have an open conversation with your child about their knowledge of online risks and safety precautions. Let your child know that you are available to answer and discuss any questions they may have about online activity. Similarly, BMH teachers can be approached by any student who feels unsure of their online experience.

Here are some basic guidelines

for parental supervision:

  • spend time together online to teach your children about appropriate online behaviour;

  • keep the computer or other devices in a common area where you can watch and monitor their use;

  • check your credit card, phone bills and WeChat wallet accounts for any unusual activity;

  • check out the parental control functions on social media apps (like WeChat) and devices;

  • take your child seriously if he or she reports an uncomfortable experience online

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at BMH if you become aware of any inappropriate or upsetting activity online between students.
