Extreme Reader Competition

Earth Day

On Friday 22nd of April, we celebrated Earth Day! Earth Day has been honoured by billions of people around the globe for the last 52 years and is a day to join together to promote the awareness of the health of our environment.

On this Earth Day, our message to the community is simple: actions matter.

Across the school, our students engaged in a wide range of activities and stimulations to highlight the importance of Earth Day. For example, Mr Chana’s class made bird feeders to reuse single-use plastic bottles and attract more wildlife onto our campus. Ms Melia’s class got their hand dirty by creating their very own classroom garden. Ms Flora’s class discussed small action for change and painted their very own caring hands earth pictures, whilst Ms Edy took her class out to pick up litter from the campus.

We are working towards environmental sustainability and global citizenship being not just something we do but a part of who we are. In essence, Earth Day is every day. We ask that parents talk to their children frequently about how to save our planet and try to make small changes at home to be more sustainable.

EXTREME READER CHALLENGE

Last week, BMH celebrated World Book Day with an assortment of reading activities and events. Students were actively busy reading in their English and Homeroom classes and the House system noticed this and believed now was the perfect chance for students to participate in a House reading competition:

EXTREME READER CHALLENGE

Students were given the instructions to take a photo of themselves reading one of their favourite books; however, they must do this in an EXTREME way. The submissions we received were fantastic and super creative!

Extreme Reader Competition

The creativity of the BMH community is endless. We had students reading on top of their cars (cars were not moving of course), upside down, with their pets, whilst receiving a NAT test, reading acrobatically and so many more positions. Even some of the teachers got involved.

We thank everyone for their submissions; however, a selected committee have chosen their favourites and these submissions have entered the WeChat vote. The top 3 students with the most votes will earn a special prize next week!

Celebrating Books and Reading

Last week students were involved in many fun reading related activities, like going on a book scavenger hunt, descriptive writing about book characters, writing fact files about authors, and even writing their own children's books.

Across the entire Prep and Senior School students celebrated their love of reading. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday students had the opportunity to buy books at the BMH Book Fair. Each class got to visit the library to browse books, write a wishlist, and then go back the next day to purchase books.

On Friday 22nd April students came to school dressed up as a book character. All the students and teachers enjoyed seeing the many costumes.

Chinese teaching seminar week

Composition is the greatest difficulty for many children in learning, and it is also a stumbling block for students in internationalised schools. In order to further help children better adjust their composition mentality and actively solve composition problems, we have organised a group of teachers in Prep 5 and 6 to focus on unit composition teaching. From material analysis, data collection, sorting, writing, and revising to publishing.

Under the leadership of the teacher, students fully experienced the whole process of composition creation and learned how to write like a writer. After the classroom discussion, the teacher team also focused on how to carry out composition teaching in senior grades and how to stimulate students' enthusiasm for writing.

We look forward to engaging in more Chinese teaching seminars in the coming months.

How to Stay Safe Online

The internet is a great place where students can learn, research homework, socialise with friends and play games. Having the world’s information at our fingertips, however, can present some risks such as online bullying, inappropriate content and inappropriate communication.

Parents should be aware of what their children are viewing and interacting with online. It’s a good idea to talk with your child about some of the dangers of social media and the internet so they can be equipped with tools to protect themselves and come to you if they are in doubt. Have a conversation with your child using the visual below so we can all become responsible internet users looking out for ourselves and others.

Useful Website of the Week

Does your child have an interest in coding or programming? In this day and age, improving one's skills in computing has become key to a myriad of professions. Whilst it might at first seem a little daunting to learn how to code, there are websites that make the process much easier. One such site is code.org, which is employed by IT teachers here at BMH to great effect. Lessons are achievable and range from absolute beginner to highly advanced, allowing students to prepare to eventually move on to other programming languages like Python or Java.

The site supports English as well as Chinese and is highly interactive. Take a look today!
