Dear students, parents, friends, and colleagues,
The new policy paper On Regulating Private Compulsory Education issued by the Central Government of China clearly stipulates that names of private schools are no longer allowed to contain foreign words.
Under the new rules and regulations, Bromsgrove School Mission Hills, also known as “深圳市龙华区柏朗思观澜湖外国语学校”, has now become “深圳市龙华区博观外国语学校” after formal approval by the Civil Affairs Bureau and Department of Education.
The original “Bromsgrove”, “Mission Hills” in the Chinese text (pronounced as “Bo Lang Si” “Guan Lan Hu”) has been changed to “BoGuan”, whose meaning we will elaborate in the paragraphs that follow. Our English name remains the same.
The new name opens a new chapter to our story.
This does not change our organisational structure, entities, and our fundamental nature as a private internationalised school. We will keep our English name Bromsgrove School Mission Hills and continue to use the same school logo. Admissions, teaching and learning, and school operation will not be affected.
We will continue our in-depth and comprehensive collaboration with Bromsgrove School UK, while it continues to have the right to shape, decide, and oversee our academic programme and openly share extensive teaching and learning resources with us.
The new name expresses our genuine wish.
Boguan comes from a quote of the Song Dynasty scholar Su Shi, meaning that any success, however small, requires a huge amount of knowledge and experience that we build up incrementally and extensively. A careful reader may have also noticed that the new name has an identical pronunciation to two of the characters in the original name, which is an extension of our tradition with added new meanings.
At BMH, we value good reading habits. Students can become voracious readers here, just like Su Shi had hoped. By reading extensively, they hold the key to becoming quick learners, distinguished scholars, versatile and erudite men and women of the world.
At BMH, students can make meaningful connections with the world while exploring a sea of knowledge and a treasure trove of experience.
The new name is a new starting point.
Students always come first in a school. To educate and enlighten is our utmost priority at all times. Whether we are called Tom, Dick or Harry, we are true to our core. Five years have passed since we first founded. In the next five years and many years that follow, we will continue to journey with you and your children, committed to bringing quality education to our community as we always have been.
Thank you for your support and attention. We will see you at BMH!
