DP Music Course


Through the DP Music course, students will develop to become well-rounded modern musicians through a combination of practical work, theoretic and technical training and the development of creative competencies.

Students and teachers have flexibility and agency to access unique and personalized content and approaches to engaging with music:

Four Areas of Inquiry combined with diverse contexts offer students the opportunity to experience a variety of musical works, forms, and genres in a meaningful manner.

Throughout the course, students embody three roles, the researcher, the creator and the performer.

Through their work, students inquire, create, perform and reflect on their work in progress. This creative process of working in the arts, and specifically in music, is encapsulated in the three musical processes, exploring music in context, experimenting with music, and presenting music.

ISNS DP Music Recital


Presenting Music is an important part of IBDP Music. The DP Music Recital at ISNS is a celebration of the work that students have completed in the DP Music course, specifically the work towards their Presenting Music component.  The students chose works of a variety of Personal, Local, and Global contexts.  This includes styles of music that range from their own playlists to music they have never encountered before.

What is the purpose of the Recital?

Jessie C.

"The Recital is for a project in the DP music course, the Presenting Portfolio. In this portfolio, we are required to perform certain pieces of our selections and present our personal creations in front of an audience. All the works performed and created are from a variety of genres. The Recital also practices our skills to perform in a formal situation."

What is involved in preparing for the recital?

Julie L.

 "We choose a genre of music and research its historical background, characteristics, instruments, etc. After that, we will analyze a piece from that genre and decide to either perform or create a piece of music in that same style. After that, we will start to either practice or compose. Eventually, we will arrange the time for the recital, the stage, and the pieces of equipment. Go through a practice round before the actual performance and finally, the actual performance."

"To prepare for the recital, I did lots of research on the usage of MIDI keyboard. When practicing, I like to pick out divs that are prone to error, and practice them over and over again until I do not make mistakes anymore. Out of the two songs, I did better on the Amadinda, but actually enjoyed the piano piece more."

What instruments, genres, styles, etc of music was presented?

Jessie C.

"In this Recital, I presented music from various genres, including electronic music, modern jazz, music for dancing, and classical music. For my performance, I focused on the piano, while my creation was composed using a digital software(Logic Pro)."

How can performing in a recital be beneficial in other areas of study?

Julie L.

"This reinforces my knowledge in psychology, looking into the connection between my physical behavior and cognition. Look into questions like why I react that way, and what might be the possible causes of my reaction and connect them to the three approaches, biological, cognition, and sociocultural. Recalling and applying the things I learned in psychology helps me to get familiar with the knowledge and review, which is very beneficial for exams as I built up my understanding."

How do you feel about the performance?

 Grace Z.

"On the DP Music Recital, I played my original Amadinda ensemble piece with MIDI keyboard, and an ACG piano piece. Overall, I felt good about my performance on the recital. Since I haven’t played piano on stage for years, it was quite a big challenge to me. I was very afraid of forgetting how to play halfway, fortunately that didn’t happen, and there were no major mistakes made."

What would you like to do in the next recital?

Grace Z.

"I would likely perform in vocal for the next recital to display more of my skills to the audience."

What is some advice for future DP Music students?

Jessie C.

"The most important thing for DP Music is to really enjoy the process of creating, performing, and exploring music from different genres and styles. It is also important to get personally engaged with the music of your choice. Although DP Music requires some writing, research, and practice, it wouldn’t be as challenging if you were fully engaged. Also, time management is a crucial factor, since the process of exploring, performing, and creating music requires time commitment to achieve success."

ISNS 预科班独奏会

独奏会的目的是什么?

Jessie C.

“独奏会是预科班音乐课程的一个项目,作品集。在这个作品集中,我们需要在观众面前表演我们选择的某些作品,并展示我们的个人创作。所有表演和创作的作品都来自不同的流派。独奏会还可以锻炼我们在正式场合的表演技巧。”


独奏会需要准备什么?

Julie L.

“我们选择一种音乐类型,研究它的历史背景、特点、乐器等。在那之后,我们将分析一个来自该流派的作品,并决定表演或创作一个相同风格的音乐作品。之后,我们要么开始练习,要么开始作曲。最后我们将安排独奏会的时间、舞台和设备。在真正的表演之前进行一轮练习,最后才是真正的表演。”

“为了准备独奏会,我对电脑音乐键盘的使用做了很多研究。练习的时候,我喜欢挑出容易出错的部分,然后一遍又一遍地练习,直到不再出错为止。在这两首歌中,《Amadinda》的表现更好,但实际上我更喜欢钢琴作品。”

“在这次独奏会上,我演奏了电子音乐、现代爵士乐、舞蹈音乐、古典音乐等各种类型的音乐。在演出中,我专注于钢琴,而我的创作是用数字软件(Logic Pro)完成的。”


独奏会上的演出对其他领域的学习产生了怎样有益的影响?

Julie L.

“在预科班音乐独奏会上,我用电脑音乐键盘和ACG钢琴演奏了我最初的Amadinda合奏作品。总的来说,我对我在独奏会上的表现感觉很好。因为我已经很多年没有在舞台上弹钢琴了,这对我来说是一个很大的挑战。我非常害怕在比赛中途忘记怎么弹,幸运的是,这种情况没有发生,也没有犯重大错误。”


下次独奏会你想表演什么?

“我很可能会在下次独奏会上表演声乐,向观众展示更多的技巧。”


对未来的预科班音乐学生有什么建议?

Jessie C.

“对于预科班音乐来说,最重要的是真正享受创作、表演和探索不同流派和风格音乐的过程。亲自参与你所选择的音乐也是很重要的。虽然DP音乐需要一些写作、研究和练习,但如果你完全投入其中,它就不会那么具有挑战性。此外,时间管理也是一个关键因素,因为探索、表演和创作音乐的过程需要投入时间才能获得成功。”
