深美一周课堂——走进阅读,成为Reading Buddies!

“阅读伙伴”是由我们自己的教师Ms Abbott于去年11月创建的。但后来停滞了一段时间,最近才重新推出。它将在每周一、周三和周五上午8点到8点25分开学前,在SAIS礼堂的舞台上举行。来自高年级的学生自愿与ELA的学生一起阅读。这对年纪较大的学生来说是一个很好的机会,对年纪较小的孩子来说,需要更多的支持和时间来阅读的孩子是一个更好的机会。


阅读导师的角色是鼓励读者对阅读的兴趣,提供支持和模范阅读的乐趣。不管读者的技能如何,有额外的时间一起大声朗读的目的是在提高读写能力的同时提高学术和社会成果。


我们的读者检查和选择一本他们感兴趣的书(书籍分类的阅读水平),与导师可能大声朗读,这样他们可以练习听力技巧或读者大声朗读和支持他们在这个过程中,帮助他们与单词识别、发音和文本理解。

Reading Buddies is a new literacy program that was created last November, by our very own Ms. Abbott, but was later discontinued for a short time before being relaunched recently. It takes place right before school starts from 8am to 8:25am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday on the stage of the auditorium at SAIS. Students from older grades volunteer to read with ELA students. This is a wonderful opportunity for older students to give back to their school’s community and an even more fantastic chance for the younger kids, who need a little more support and time, to read and be read to.


The role of the reading mentor is to encourage the reader’s interest in reading, provide support and model reading for pleasure. The intention of having this extra time to read out loud together, regardless of the reader’s skills, is to increase academic and social outcomes while promoting literacy.


Our readers check in and choose a book they are interested in (books are categorized by reading level) and are paired with a mentor who may either read out loud to them so that they can practice their listening skills or have the reader read out loud and support them in

the process, helping them with word recognition, pronunciation and text comprehension.


“Students that read for at least 30 minutes a day [become] proficient readers and proficient

readers by the time they are in 3rd grade are 5 times more likely to graduate high school on time than their peers that are not proficient readers” (Strong, 2022).


Essentially, reading builds vocabulary, and improves reading and writing skills. And while

improving skills and supporting our eager readers is beneficial and even noteworthy, the

most important thing is that reading is FUN! It sparks imagination and introduces the reader to a new world! And reading together? Well, that makes it doubly more fun and all the more meaningful.
