Your Character Growth

Good afternoon,

Welcome special guests, school leaders, teachers, family, and friends. Last, but not least, welcome 2023 SCCSC graduates. Today is your day. It gives me great pleasure to address you on this momentous occasion.

When you came to this school in grade 10, it was the start of a new journey, and a step towards new adventures and new experiences. During the past three years you have progressed through countless new experiences, whether it was in the classroom or through our clubs, Round Square, Model United Nations, robotics, or the Waterloo math competitions. You have made friends, cultivated relationships, met with success, suffered some setbacks, tackled issues, solved problems, and learned a new language. You may not realize it, but your character has grown with every new step.

Your character, your tenacity, and your resiliency were constantly being measured. There were no guarantees in grade 10 that so many of you would be accepted into top universities in Canada, the United States, and England. There were no free tickets to give away. SCCSC was a toolbox. You built your skills using the resources of SCCSC, but SCCSC did not build you. You did that. Take credit for your achievements.

I know each of you were challenged over that last three years. High school brought an array of new problems to solve, experiences to cope with, and new lenses to view our world. Many of you may have thought it was the end of the world when you needed to work in a group with people you rarely spoke to, or perhaps you were shocked when you submitted what you thought was a perfectly written English assignment and was told, “This is good, now let’s try to make it better.” Every situation in high school put you in a better position for success in university. Not feeling comfortable – feeling challenged, will eventually be the new normal for you.

Now, you have reached this step in your journey; the step that takes you to adulthood. By earning your diploma, you are prepared to continue your journey. You have earned this rite of passage.

As you continue your journey, know that you are never alone. Reach out to the people here and to others you have yet to meet. There is always someone willing to assist you, and to help you on your journey.

It may be difficult to imagine but think of the places you’ll go in the next phase of your lives; the challenges you’ll face and overcome. You may feel nervous and apprehensive, but I’m sure you also feel happy and excited.

Take in as many new sights, sounds, and experiences as you can. Having spent the last twenty years of my life travelling to 43 countries, I know that the challenges are what are worth remembering, because overcoming challenges will produce outcomes that are worth the wait.

SCCSC wishes you well as your steps take you away from us. Remember to visit us and share how your journey is going. We congratulate you on your accomplishments, past, present and future. We salute your effort and diligence to being the best you can be. We know you will do well in your future endeavours.

各位来宾、各位领导、老师们、家长们、朋友们，欢迎你们。最重要的是，欢迎2023届各位SCCSC毕业生。今天是属于你们的一天，我非常高兴在这个重要时刻向你们致辞。

你们从高一来到这所学校时，就开始了新的一段人生旅程，也是迈向新冒险和新体验的一步。在过去的三年里，无论是在课堂上，还是在我们的社团、综实、圆方、模拟联合国、机器人或滑铁卢数学竞赛中，你都经历了无数次新的历程。你交了朋友，建立了关系，取得了成功，遭受了一些挫折，解决了问题，挑战了难题，学会了新语言。你可能都没有意识到，但你的品性随着每一步的进步而成长。

你的性格、你的坚韧和你的毅力一直在被衡量。在高一年级时，难以保证你们中的许多人会被加拿大、美国和英国的顶尖大学录取。世上没有免费的票可送。SCCSC是一个工具箱，不是SCCSC塑造了你，而是你利用SCCSC的资源来培养了你的技能。你做到了，你的成就值得称赞。

我知道在过去的三年里，你们每个人都受到了挑战。高中带来了一系列需要解决的新问题、需要应对的新体验以及我们看待世界的新视角。比如：当你需要和不怎么熟悉的同学一起小组/团队活动时，你们中的许多人可能认为这是世界末日；或者当你提交了一份你认为写得很好的英语作业，但被老师告知“很好，但是可以继续努力让它变得更好。”高中经历的每一种情况都会让你在大学里取得成功。感觉不舒服——感觉受到挑战，最终会成为你的新常态。

现在，你已经在你的人生旅程中迈出了这一步，带你走向成年的一步。你获得了高中毕业，你将准备继续你的人生旅程。你值得拥有今天这个庄重的成人礼。
