Fiona Zhang

“As an IB educator and life-long learner, Open-minded is a very important principle which guiding my work and life. We are an IB international school, we aim to cultivate global citizens and our students as well as our teachers are also come from different areas、 countries and cultures,  everyone is unique. I respect and appreciate the diversity of our students and my colleagues. I always remind myself to be open-minded and try my best to listen to every student’s ideas, opinions and try to understand and respect different perspectives.”

Yan Li

 K3 Teaching Assistant

“Being open-minded requires a willingness to listen to and accept new ideas. It demands flexibility of thought and action. An open mind also respects different cultures and perspectives, while celebrating diversity - whether in the classroom or the larger community. I demonstrate open-mindedness when I try new things and learn about new ways of teaching and learning. I learn from my mistakes and am able to grow as an individual and as an educator. ”

Marinela Gosav

Grade 5 Homeroom Teacher

“Being open-minded is the ability to consider other

people’ perspectives, trying to put yourself in their

shoes. It means being empathetic to them, even if youmight disagree with their point of view.

How to be an open-minded person? Enjoy being a

lifelong learner who takes the time to evaluate all aspectsof a problem with a growth mindset and answer questions such as ‘How do you know what you know?’, ‘Why do you believe what you believe?’. It might be difficult sometimes, but not impossible.”

Juliet Kiester

 MYP Science Teacher

“My great-grandma used to say ‘Don't be prejudiced, because you'll miss too much.’ Being open-minded means listening carefully. It means seeking the unknown. It means celebrating differences. Opening your mind will open so much more - friendships, doors, new experiences, and unique opportunities. It is the best way for us to connect to each other and make progress together.”

Natalie Chen

Grade 1 EAL Teacher

“Being open-minded is not only to truly understand and value different cultures and perspectives of others, but also to positively acknowledge your advantages and things you would like to get better at,  and continuously grow from other’s experience.

Ravis Williams

MYP PE Teacher

“Open Mindedness is a powerful tool. It has taken me from a small town in the United States all across the world. Not only does open mindedness allow me to approach difficult situations with empathy but allows me to collaborate with people who have different values than me. I find that, in the times we live in and the type of person I want to be: Open mindedness is everything!”

John Bursey

 Grade 4 Homeroom Teacher

“Being open-minded is the willingness to learn and have your own beliefs about people and ideas challenged. It is a mix of being curious about the world, accepting differences, and being flexible in examining your own biases or blindspots. It allows us to be more kind, try new things, and live more exciting and fuller lives.

The willingness to accept new ideas is something we need right now in our global community. Having conversations with people we disagree with is the only way people will understand each other and come to compromises about critical global issues.

People do not just start out being open-minded. Like anything else, we get better at this Learner Profile Attribute when we think about what it means and work to improve ourselves. If we all work at being open-minded, the world would be a more caring and understanding place."

IB LEARNER PROFILE ATTRIBUTES- Open-minded

Fiona Zhang

Yan Li

Marinela Gosav

Juliet Kiester

Natalie Chen

Ravis Williams

John Bursey
