Dear SIS Families,

This week we are fortunate to have another consultant working with our teachers in Kg-G5 regarding the Science of Reading. Erika Olson from Erin Kent Consulting met with grade level teams to discuss recent research on reading and how it connects to the reading program at SIS. We also spent time working in classes to review teaching strategies and collecting information to inform planning. Erika will return to SIS in the second semester. Watch out for a parent training on this topic!

It is that time of year again!  The winter MAP assessment window for students in G2 through G5 is from Wednesday, November 12th, through to Friday, December 1st.  G2 students will sit the Mathematics and Reading assessments, while students in G3 - G5 will sit Mathematics, Reading and Language Use assessments. Please encourage healthy eating and early bedtimes during this window of time, to help all our students perform at their very best on this assessment.

Our Prek2 classes are hosting Sensory Exploration event with families. This is an opportunity for parents and children to participate in sensory activities together, allowing space to highlight how sensory play can contribute to children's cognitive development.

Five interactive stations were set up offering a range of experiences, including explorations with vegetable and fruit painting, pumpkin seed sorting, wet and dry sensory bins, and a gross motor area.

At the event, children led the exploration of each station while parents actively asked relevant questions to provoke discussions. This helped parents:

· Experience how these sensory experiences foster critical thinking and deepen children’s

· Witness firsthand their children's sensory engagement and language development.

· See children’s creativity, problem-solving, inquisitive nature, and critical thinking skills in action.

This Sensory Exploration affirmed our beliefs around the positive impact of play on children's growth and development. While some parents were a bit apprehensive about getting too messy before the explorations, it was wonderful to see how much fun everyone had! Our young leaders from the Student Council finally had their Bake Sale on Wednesday! STUCO members have been planning this fund-raising activity in order to fund future events.  This day they raised 3410 RMB. Thank you for your support!

Last week our Grade 2CBP class were introduced to a new technology tool called "OSMO". How does it work? With OSMO, children use real-world objects and manipulate them in front of a tablet or iPad camera. The OSMO software then translates their physical actions into exciting on-screen activities and challenges. It's a bridge between the physical and digital worlds, encouraging hands-on learning.  

What can OSMO offer our students at SIS that encompasses many aspects of our Primary Years Programme? 

· Engagement: OSMO makes learning feel like play, keeping children motivated and eager to explore.

· Critical Thinking: It fosters problem-solving, creative thinking, and logical reasoning through its interactive games and puzzles.

· Math and Literacy Skills: OSMO includes games that strengthen math and literacy skills, ensuring your child is well-prepared academically.

· Collaboration: Some OSMO activities encourage teamwork and collaboration, promoting social skills.

· Adaptability: OSMO offers a wide range of games and apps suitable for various age groups and subjects.

The Grade 2 CBP students had so much fun engaging in this activity. Over the next few weeks, all of our classes will experience an interaction with this tool.

Les Restos du Coeur is a famous French association that helps and supports the poor, particularly with food through access to free meals, and through participation in their social and economic integration, as well as in any action against poverty in all its forms.

At SIS, we believe in supporting each other and our action represents what the association is doing. Therefore, we created Les Restos de SIS. We would like to be able to donate money to the same association and we have invited special guests for our event.

The students in FIP and FAL, and SIS staff members will share songs in French to represent our action. You are welcome to watch the performances that will happen on Monday 11th December. However, there is a limited number of seats. Please scan the QR code to save you a seat.

The performances will be as follow:

-KG to G2 will be from 9:00-9:45am (100 seats available)
-G3 to G5 will be from 10:15-11:00am (80 seats available)

We look forward to welcoming you at our singing concert. The QR code for making donations will be available at the theater. There will also be a donation box if you prefer to give cash.
