VPA STEAM DAY|不受限也不设限

STEAM一直以来都是VPA非常重视的一个课程,它将科学、科技、工程、数学与艺术这五个元素融合在一起,创造出一个多层次、全方位的学习环境,为学生提供更为综合与创新的学习体验。

STEAM教室中有各种机器,启发学生们的创新能力同时,锻炼他们的动手能力。

科技相关的课程,除了STEAM,我们还有IT和Design。IT即是电脑课,为3-5年级的学生普及电脑的基础功能,学会自己上网做研究。


设计思考


Design则可以视为高阶版STEAM,专为中学生提供,结合设计中的7大元素(线条、形状、色彩、肌理、空间、形态、明暗),充分发挥设计思考(Design Thinking)培养孩子们解决问题的能力、创造力和对于艺术、设计的感觉。

上周,我们迎来了一年一度的STEAM DAY,Mr. Branstine为孩子们准备了一系列趣味活动,我们还有幸邀请到了两位在高科技行业深耕多年的杰出家长代表,以及腾讯教育顾问严玉庆先生,为孩子们带来三场精彩纷呈的讲座活动。



尹爱同学的爸爸为大家分享了AI相关的知识,从什么是AI,到AI的历史,再到当下现实生活中的AI,以及AI的未来,还让孩子们亲身体验了AI游戏。这次分享不仅受到了孩子们的热烈欢迎,而且激发了他们提出许多充满思考的问题。



在活动的最后,我们也有幸采访了尹爸爸,他说:“不管是孩子还是家长,我们都应该与AI共同成长,一起进化。”



并且他还强调“在AI面前,不分性别” 鼓励所有孩子打破思想上的约束和刻板印象,每个孩子都有无限的可能。尹爱妈妈也提到,斯坦福大学最近有两位女学生联合创办一所AI公司,非常轰动业界。



我们希望能够在各种丰富的课程中,让孩子们找到并坚定地做自己喜欢的事,让“男生适合学理科”和“女生适合学文科”这种话语不再存在,每个人都有自己独特的“适合”。



林子雄同学的爸爸则是带大家进入了机器人的世界,详细介绍了机器人是如何运作的、激光雷达技术的原理与应用等内容,向孩子们展示科技的发展。



与尹爱爸爸的观点一致,他也鼓励家长和孩子共同体验新的技术,将科技作为辅助工具,引导着孩子在自己热爱的道路上不断发展。



子雄爸爸也非常认可STEAM课程的理念:在解决问题中学习。在他的日常工作中,也经常遇到很多困难,所以拥有解决问题的思维是非常重要的。



来自腾讯的尹玉庆老师更是给孩子们提供了一个全新的视角,向他们展示人工智能是怎么在生活和工作中应用的。



他强调数据分析的重要性,通过足够多的数据,我们可以更好地理解和预测人们的行为。他还提到了警察们使用人脸识别技术的实例,特别是在寻找被拐卖的儿童方面取得的显著成果。人工智能技术的发展实实在在地解决了许多社会问题,对人们的生活产生着积极影响。



尹老师高度赞扬了我们的STEAM DAY,为孩子们增长见识,建构思维。他认为STEAM课程的价值在于关注人的成长,在孩子们完成工程任务的过程中,孩子们的合作能力、表达能力、责任感都会自然生长出来。



在合作中,孩子们也会更加了解自己,了解自己的优势和喜好,将知识学以致用,而不是停留在应付考试。


STEAM DAY实验活动


除了这些精彩的讲座,孩子们在STEAM DAY还体验了各种科学实验,包括糖分对液体密度的影响、水果电池(通过柠檬来创建闭合电路,又在不损失过多电能的情况下,将灯泡点亮)、一花一色变(通过植物色素在酸碱下的可逆变化与高温下的不可逆变化有什么区别,并对应呈现出不同的颜色),以及面粉揉筋(通过揉洗面粉来分离淀粉和蛋白质,并通过实验来了解它们的基本性状)。



当天在场的家委们也纷纷表示受益匪浅,会与孩子们一起拥抱科技,也很感谢VPA为孩子们准备了这么多活动,在快乐的环境中开拓视野。



不管今后选择什么道路,我们都希望孩子们能够从VPA的STEAM教育中受到启迪,保持好奇,不断探索,


不受限也不设限。

STEAM has always been a curriculum highly valued by VPA, integrating the elements of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and arts. It creates a multi-level, comprehensive learning environment, providing students with a more holistic and innovative learning experience.

STEAM Room


In the STEAM classroom, we have various machines that inspire students' creativity and enhance their hands-on skills.

In addition to STEAM, we offer technology-related courses, including IT and Design. IT, or computer class, introduces basic computer functions to students in grades 3-5, teaching them to navigate the internet for research.

Design Thinking


Design, considered an advanced version of STEAM, is designed for middle school students. It combines the seven elements of design (line, shape, color, texture, space, form, value) with design thinking, fostering problem-solving abilities, creativity, and a sense of art and design.

7 Elements of Art


Last week, we celebrated our annual STEAM DAY, featuring a series of fun activities prepared by Mr. Branstine. We were fortunate to have two outstanding parents deeply involved in the high-tech industry, as well as Mr. YuQing Yan, an education consultant from Tencent, delivering three fascinating lecture sessions.


Our student Yin Ai's father shared knowledge about AI, covering its definition, history, current applications, and future prospects. Our students not only warmly welcomed the presentation but also raised many thoughtful questions, actively engaging in an AI games.


Towards the end of the event, we had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Yin, who emphasized, "No matter if you're a child or a parent, we should grow and evolve with AI."


He further emphasized that "When facing AI, there is no gender difference," encouraging all children to break through mental constraints and stereotypes, recognizing the limitless potential within each individual. Mrs. Ai also mentioned two female students from Stanford University recently co-founded an AI company, creating a significant impact in the industry.


We aim to help children find and pursue what they love in a variety of rich courses, eliminating stereotypes such as "boys are more suited for science" or "girls are more suited for humanities." Every individual has his or her unique "suit."


Lin Zixiong's father delved into the world of robotics, explaining how robots operate and the principles and applications of laser radar technology. 


Aligned with Mr. Yin, he also encourages parents and children to experience new technologies together, using technology as a supplementary tool to guide children to develop continuously on the road they love.


He is also a big fan of STEAM's philosophy: learn through problem solving. In his daily work, he often encounters a lot of difficulties, and it is very important to have a problem-solving mindset.


Mr. Yan, from Tencent, provided a fresh perspective, showcasing how artificial intelligence is applied in daily life and work.


He emphasized the importance of data analysis, stating that with enough data, we can better understand and predict human behavior. He also highlighted instances where police officers successfully used facial recognition technology to locate abducted children, demonstrating the tangible impact of AI on solving societal problems.


Mr. Yan praised our STEAM DAY, recognizing its value in fostering children's growth. He emphasized that the value of the STEAM education lies in focusing on human development. Through engineering tasks, children will naturally develop the skills of cooperation, expression, and a sense of responsibility.


Through teamwork, children will also get to learn about themselves, their strengths and preferences, and put what they have learned to use, rather than just dealing with exams.

STEAM DAY Experiments


In addition to the enlightening lectures, our students participated in various science experiments during STEAM DAY. These experiments included exploring the impact of sugar on liquid density, creating fruit batteries, demonstrating reversible and irreversible changes in plant pigments, and separating starch and protein through kneading flour.


The PTA memebers who presented that day expressed their deep appreciation for the enlightening experience and mentioned that they would embrace technology together with their children. They also conveyed sincere gratitude to VPA for organizing so many activities, allowing the children to broaden their horizons in a joyful environment.


No matter what path they will choose in the future, we hope that children will be inspired by VPA's STEAM education, maintaining curiosity, continually exploring, breaking the limitations, and never setting up limitations for themselves or other people.
