Dear SIS Families,


This week, our students in grades 1 and 4 engaged in field trips to local markets. Visiting local establishments are important for hands-on learning, practical knowledge, and skill development. By exploring the local market, students engage with the real world, learn about different products, and develop observation, communication, and critical thinking skills. Interacting with vendors also fosters financial literacy and social skills. These trips offer a holistic educational experience that promotes curiosity and practical life skills.

本周,我们一年级和四年级的学生前往当地市场进行实地考察。参观当地机构对于实践学习、实践知识和技能发展至关重要。通过探索当地市场,学生们可以接触到真实世界,了解不同的产品,并培养观察、沟通和批判性思维能力。与供应商互动也有助于培养财务素养和社会技能。这些旅行提供了全面的教育体验,促进好奇心和实用生活技能的发展。


G4 Field Trip to Ole and Walmart

四年级Ole和沃尔玛实地考察

As part of the How We Organize Ourselves unit, Grade 4 have been challenged to apply principles of basic economics and sustainability as they prepare to open their pop-up restaurants. In preparation for this, the Grade 4 students had to submit business proposals and meet with the Primary School Leadership team in order to secure a cash loan. Everyone was successful in securing a loan! 


This week, they used some of their loan money at Walmart to purchase enough ingredients for their sample dishes. They collected feedback and perfected their recipes. See you at the G4 restaurants next week!

G1 Field Trip to Ole and Wet Market

一年级学生到Ole超市和湿货市场实地考察

G1's current inquiry under How we Organize Ourselves focuses on how communities and people satisfy their needs and wants with the help of goods and services. Students built upon their knowledge through in-class learning engagements, discussions, and reflections; however, first-hand experience is vital to solidifying their understanding of the unit’s concepts. Therefore, Grade 1 visited the Shekou Wet Market and Ole to learn more about the goods and services available to the Shekou community.


Prior to the field trip, students discussed how to budget their money and identified the goods and services surrounding them. During the field trip, students took the initiative to talk and negotiate with the sellers as they purchased their items. Additionally, students inquired into the services that helped them during the shopping experience which helped them buy their goods by questioning the staff and sellers. After the field trip, students reflected on what they had learned as they compared and contrasted their experiences at the Wet Market and Ole.


In class, students used math to graph what they bought and how much it cost. They also wrote a review sharing their opinion on which location provided the better shopping experience with the best goods and services.

一年级学生目前在“我们如何组织自己”主题下的探究重点是社区和人们如何通过商品和服务来满足他们的需要和愿望。学生们通过课堂学习参与、讨论和反思来巩固他们的知识,然而,第一手经验对于巩固他们对单元概念的理解至关重要。因此,一年级的学生们参观了蛇口湿货市场和Ole超市,以了解更多关于蛇口社区的商品和服务。

在课堂上,学生们运用数学绘制了他们购买物品和花费金额的图表。他们还撰写了一篇评论,分享了对哪个地方提供更好购物体验、最佳商品和服务的看法。

Introducing storyteller’s workshop in Prek2!

介绍在Prek2年级的故事演讲者

A story should be orally told before it is written. Storytelling helps develop oral language skills, basic literacy skills, independence, and creativity.


Our storytelling workshop approach in Prek2 involves three steps

  1. A short/mini lesson

  2. Independent work time

  3. Group share time or closing lesson


This format is consistent with the readers, writers, and math workshops throughout Kindergarten and primary. Prek 2 teachers have started incorporating aspects of this approach into their storytelling unit of inquiry.


Current focus in class are:

  • Introducing the storytelling workshop routine.

  • Highlighting that storytellers create characters who add and change the feeling to their story.

  • Helping student notice that stories have a structure: beginning, middle, ending


Over the next few weeks, we will devote time to our storytelling workshop, which will allow students to have a balance of academic skills and knowledge along with the play-based approach that children at this age need.

一个好故事应该先口头讲述,然后再书写下来。通过讲故事可以培养口语技能、基本的读写能力、独立性和创造力。


我们在Prek2中使用的故事讲座方法包括三个步骤

  1. 进行简短/迷你课程

  2. 给予学生独立工作时间

G5 visits KK Park

五年级学生到KK Park

The G5 students went to KK Park as part of their PSPE unit on Movement Composition. They had an exciting time learning about trick shots, refining their manipulative skills, and gaining a deeper understanding of force and speed. During the trip, the students took part in practical demonstrations, hands-on experiences, and interactive workshops, all of which helped to expand their knowledge and abilities. Through these activities, they also developed their teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, which will be valuable for their academic and personal growth. We would like to express our gratitude to the teachers and students who supported and contributed to the success of this field trip.

FIP's La Chandeleur

FIP的La Chandeleur庆典

On Tuesday morning, the FIP students from Jingshan and The Bay celebrated two traditional French holidays: La Chandeleur and Mardi-Gras. While Mardi-Gras (Shrove Tuesday) was traditionally celebrated through food indulgence before Lent, La Chandeleur (February 2nd) was attributed to the approaching end of winter. In modern times, this day is honored in France by making crêpes, symbolizing the sun with their circular shape and golden hue.


Following a brief presentation at Level 5, students worked in small groups to prepare crepe batter for their younger peers. Math application was through hands-on activities like measuring, weighing, and cooking. The collaborative effort continued as The Bay students welcomed Jingshan classmates to join in making pancakes and crafting carnival masks. This delightful event served as a valuable learning opportunity, allowing students to practise self-management, communication, and social skills while working together as a team.

周二上午,来自景山和湾区的FIP学生庆祝了两个法国传统节日:La Chandeleur和Mardi-Gras。Mardi-Gras(忏悔星期二)传统上在大斋节前通过丰盛的饮食来庆祝,而La Chandeleur(2月2日)被认为是冬天即将结束的象征,在现代法国,人们通过制作可丽饼来庆祝这一天,其圆形和金黄色调寓意着太阳。

Congratulations and Thank you to those who successfully bid for the FIP Prek1/2's 3D artwork and canvas paintings. They have now found new homes. In total, the auction earned close to 3000 RMB which will go towards supporting the Shenzhen Mangrove Wetland Conservation Foundation. Well done, FIP Prek1/2 class and bidders!

Our PSPE teachers and coaches spent time with Jack Rolfe, founder of The Coaching Lab. On his first trip to China, he shared his MatchPlay cards and some tips & tricks to improve teaching and learning in practices and PE classes. The beauty of this profession is that we never stop learning.
