Adolescent depression has become a social problem of global concern. A study of Chinese adolescents found that the prevalence of depression among Chinese middle and high school adolescents was 24.3%. This result is slightly lower than that of the US (29%) and higher than that of Australia (16.6%).

"Depression is a very common problem for today's Chinese students, about 1 in 5 high school students suffers from depression. Even more serious than this problem is the stigmatization of depression among Chinese teenagers. This directly results in the exclusion and even bullying of high school groups with depression, who are unable to seek outside help."

Recently, G11 Sara Wu from SIFC completed a research on "Stigmatization of Depression among Chinese High School Students." Under the guidance of SIFC psychology teacher Mr. Alistair Heald, she reviewed a large number of English literature, studied the impact on this problem of COVID-19, social media, ethical considerations, etc. and analyzed solutions from both personal and social perspectives. To this end, she independently wrote a 6,000-word report in English.

Mr. Alistair Heald commented: I think that first of all——the quality of writing evidenced in that research piece goes beyond the level of schools. Generally that level of research is found in universities. The effect of covid has caused anxiety and depression to spike globally. Producing research on these subjects enables individuals to understand what they are going through and creates resources for other researchers to use. Sara also explored the social dynamics of depression. This is useful because most of the research on anxiety and depression is biologically based. Therefore Sara is adding more knowledge to an important area.

支点

Pivot

Alistair。

The reason Sara Wu stepped into the world of psychology is definitely Mr. Alistair. When Sara proposed to study the topics related to depression stigma, Mr. Alistair immediately expressed his appreciation and support, and offered to help if there was any need. After that, whenever Sara encountered a problem, Mr. Alistair would guide her through WeChat or face-face communication.

Mr. Alistair has an air of seriousness that Sara sometimes finds funny." Mr. Alistair is very earnest. If I ask him any questions on WeChat, he will write a 'small essay' for me. He treats things seriously, such as whether my name is spelled Sara or Sarah, or what a certain emoji means (laughs)."

Sara's Notes

For Sara, there is more than one "pivot" in her life. In Sara's memory, she had a very anxious period, from grades 6-9, when she was under pressure caused by studies and interpersonal relationships. Now it seems that she has been liberated from these pressures.

She originally attended a public school and later moved to another international school. She once thought that the source of her anxiety was because of her unsatisfactory scores, so she worked hard. But when her grades reached the top of the class, new anxiety came—she began to worry about her grades falling behind. The situation improved until she came to SIFC.

"I am not a very adaptable student. Fortunately, after coming to SIFC, I met a group of very good friends and counselors right away, and with their help, I became more and more peaceful. I am especially grateful to counselors Jean, Nikki, and Sel. My anxiety eased naturally when I openly talked to them about my troubles."

Study and relationship pressures are among the sources of anxiety for most teenagers. As mentioned in Sara's research, on the one hand, the uncertainty brought about by covid-19 has increased anxiety, and on the other hand, social media has also been found to play a role in the development of negative stereotypes. However, Sara rarely experiences anxiety from her studies and interpersonal communication.

How to relieve stress in relationships? Sara shared: "When I have a conflict with a friend, I will control my emotions first and then express my thoughts frankly. It's good to express my feelings clearly."

Regarding study pressure, Sara said: "I think as long as you do what you can do, you don’t have to worry about not achieving your goal. Try not to pursue unattainable goals. As long as you are doing your best, there is no need to worry about the results and the distant future. I want to say to many of my peers that life is a long-distance run, and we can’t give up just because there is one small failure. There is also no need to compare ourselves to others. When we see that someone excels at one thing, we can just learn from them.”

Through reviewing the literature, she believes that there are many ways to relieve stress, such as participating in activities such as yoga, meditation, etc. To find happiness is to stop the competition and pay attention to how you feel. During the interview, Sara emphasized the importance of mental health, which is as important as physical health and is the cornerstone of life. She sincerely hopes to help every peer who has a similar experience with herself.

How do we break internal competition?

Sara mentioned that the increase in depression is also related to an "overly competitive" society, and she took this opportunity to express her views without reservation.

“We need a more inclusive society, a society that allows different types of people to coexist. There are people of all skin colors, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds in this society. Labeling different people will only limit the development of civilization, and the rise of circles and gangs, leading to social disharmony."

"From an individual point of view, we just need to open our hearts and allow people who are different from us to exist. Society is changing, and so must people."

Internal competition is so terrible, but how do we break it? Although Sara is a high school student, her opinion is extraordinary: "In a fast-paced life, people tend to pay too much attention to the results rather than the process. If we blindly pursue scores or savings, it is difficult to obtain sustained happiness. Just imagine, for a moment, when you get the ideal score, will your life be successful? If you blindly pursue your goals, your life will be on loop of chasing, and it will be very hard. In fact, the process of pursuit itself is very fulfilling. When you can enjoy the current process of hard work and the gradual improvement of yourself, you will probably be happier than when you actually reached the goal."

If anxiety is an emotion, then anti-anxiety is a thought. Sara's words teach us a lot. If we can't change the environment, the rules or the social dynamics, then change our mindset. Think about it, how many people are always comparing themselves with others instead of focusing and improving on themselves?

Being able to grasp the profound meaning of happiness at such a young age is enough to make people envious. What is even more commendable is that she not only got rid of anxiety for herself, but also tries to pass this positive energy to more people. This original intention can also be seen in other teachers and students of SIFC, because this is one of SIFC's ideas for cultivating talents—since we all share this one world, we should not only pay attention to our own development, but also to the future of humanity, and strive to make the environment and society in which we live better in our own way.
