——公众演讲课

Public Speaking



每个人都需要一堂演讲课。在深国预,演讲是每个学生都必须具备的能力。无论是在学校,还是去往世界、步入职场,他们面对的任何一次交流,本质上都是一次演讲。演讲能力,可以帮助学生获得更多人生机会,也是领导力的重要组成部分。

Everyone needs a speech class. At SIFC, presentation is a must-have ability for every student. Whether it is in school, going to the world, or entering the workplace, any communication they face is essentially a speech. Speaking ability can help students gain more life opportunities and is also an important part of leadership.


深国预的公众演讲课程是由深国预外方校长David Medina博士亲自授课的。

SIFC's speech class is taught by Dr. David Medina, Vice Foreign Principal of SIFC.


他认为学生通过演讲课,不仅能学习英语语言表达、肢体语言、表情管理等演讲技巧,更是掌握了一项重要的受益终身的能力:“公众演讲有助于建立学生的信心,并教会他们表达想法所需的技能。这可以帮助他们未来的工作,面试和签证申请。在我的课堂上,学生会学习演讲和辩论技巧,练习肢体语言、面部表情和各种英文的语音语调。目前,我们正在制作属于我们自己的模拟TED会议,每个学生会根据自己感兴趣的主题来给大家授课。对于非英语母语的人来说,能够充满魄力地进行超过5分钟的演讲已经是一个不小的成就。”

He believes that through speech classes, students can not only learn the English language, body language, expression management, and other speaking skills but also master important life-long abilities:” Public speaking helps build students confidence and teaches them skills needed in expressing their ideas. This can help them with future jobs, interviews, and visa applications. Students learn to look for and practice body language, facial expressions, and various tones. Students have learned to debate and invalidate others' claims. Currently, we are making our own mock TED conference in which each student will speak for 5-10 minutes teaching the class about a subject they love. For non-native speakers to be confident enough to present over 5 minutes is a great achievement."



在David Medina校长的教育理念里,国际教育的目标是让中国学生更好地适应国外环境,去更大的世界蓬勃发展。他希望学生能够把中国带到世界,并尽最大努力以本土视角培养未来的世界领袖。毫无疑问,他把这一理念融入了公众演讲的课堂上。演讲能力不是任何一个课程体系所考核的硬性指标,但对一个人的发展至关重要。可以说,公众演讲课是学校里的选修课,却是人生的必修课。

In the educational philosophy of Principal David Medina, the goal of international education is to prepare Chinese students to thrive in a foreign environment. He wants students to take China to the world and do our best to prepare the future leaders of the world with a local perspective. No doubt he incorporated this idea into his public speaking class. Speech ability is not a rigid indicator assessed by any curriculum system, but it is crucial to a person's development. ——数论

Number Theory



提起“数论”,大多数人对它是陌生的。随着物理、计算机、工程学的发展,数论在当今先进软件工程领域里,尤其是在安全密码中占有绝对关键地位。毫不夸张地说,它是密码学的核心。从RSA算法到如今火热流行的区块链,数论作为密码学的核心基石经历着一场激动人心的革命。

When it comes to “Number Theory", most people are unfamiliar with it. With the development of physics, computers, and engineering, number theory occupies an absolutely key position in today's advanced software engineering field, especially in secure cryptography. It is no exaggeration to say that it is the heart of cryptography. From the RSA algorithm to the now popular blockchain, number theory, as the core cornerstone of cryptography, has undergone an exciting revolution.

“Number theory provides a deep dive into the basic structure of numbers. It is the absolute purest form of pure mathematics.” This is how SIFC math teacher Sam introduced number theory.


“对于深国预学生而言,学习数论可以培养他们的批判性分析和解决问题的能力。与其他传统高中数学课程不同的是,数论更鼓励创造性和突破框架的思考力。数论以多种形式体现在现实生活中,比如密码学、计算机科学、信息技术、建模功能和内存管理等。在我的课堂上,我们会开展一些项目加深学生们对数论的理解。我们做过一个有意思的课题探究,同学们通过演算、推理得出了与高斯的质数定理一致的结论。”

"This rigorous course is designed to help develop students' critical analysis and tough problem-solving skills. Unlike in other traditional high school math courses, creativity and thinking outside the box is actually strongly encouraged in Number theory. Applications to real-life situations include Cryptography, Computer science, Information technology, Modelling functions, and Memory management. The most meaningful assignment that we have done to date, was a project involving the decreasing density of primes as natural numbers rise up to infinity."

探索自己的生命策略

——哲学

Philosophy



哲学这条智慧的河流,发源于往哲先贤的辩论与洞见,影响着科学、宗教、艺术等人类文明成果。面对源远流长的哲学史,卷帙浩繁的哲学著作,我们需要一位“摆渡人”。他就是深国预心理学、哲学老师Alistair。

Philosophy, the river of wisdom, originates from the debates and insights of sages and sages that affect the achievements of human civilization such as science, religion, and art. Facing the history of philosophy and philosophical writings, we need a "ferryman". He is Alistair, SIFC Psychology and Philosophy teacher.


Alistair老师介绍到:“哲学是一门调查课程,学生会学习不同哲学家的作品和思想。在我的课堂上,我们既关注西方哲学的起源,也学习以中国为代表的东方哲学的基本思想。为了让学生深入理解哲学,将哲学理论应用于现实生活场景,学生需要完成为期一年的伦理学相关的课题研究。这样做的目的是培养学生的洞察能力、分析能力,同时巩固他们在英语口语、阅读及写作方面的优势。”

Mr. Alistair said: “Grade 12 philosophy is a survey course where students study a variety of smaller pieces by different philosophers. The course has a dual track focusing both on the Greco- Roman origins of philosophy in the West and also covers some of the fundamental tenants of Eastern philosophy. Students are also required to complete a year-long unit in moral philosophy where various philosophical theories are applied to real-life scenarios. The idea is to enable students to develop their analytical skills while simultaneously building their strengths in speaking, reading, and writing."



孤独、爱恨、生死、迷惘、欲望……这些往往都是困扰人们的几大问题。我们作为普通人,也能从哲学中获得启示,并匹配到自己的人生经验上,不断地思索、怀疑、反思,从而组成属于自己的“哲学”,找到应对不同人生课题的不同方法。因此,Alistair老师为学生们分配了一项贯穿全年的研究任务——要求学生选定自己感兴趣的1-2个哲学问题,并在全年收集有关这些问题的数据和研究,并在每季度展示一次新的发现。

Loneliness, love and hate, life and death, confusion, desire... These are often the major problems that plague people. As ordinary people, we can also get inspiration from philosophy and match it to our own life experience, constantly thinking, doubting, and reflecting, so as to form our own "philosophy" and find different ways to deal with different life issues. Students have been assigned a philosopher’s project which they work on throughout the year. This project entails students deciding on 1 or 2 philosophical issues that they are interested in and collecting data and research on these issues throughout the year. Students present their findings on a quarterly basis.




“准大学”的课程体验

——社会学

Sociology



深国预社科组副组长Richard博士曾这样描述社会学——现实世界呈现在我们眼前时,像一幅五彩斑斓,却又有些凌乱、甚至不堪的画卷,这时候如果有一位名画鉴赏师,给我们一些“理论”或“结构”,比如告诉我们这幅画作是出自某位画师只手,该画师属于某画派,该画派有什么风格,笔法、光影、色彩之间是如何协调的,画的主题又是如何体现出来,这时候,这幅画在我们眼中就会变得生动起来,我们的生命经历和这幅画作就开始产生联结,这幅画作对我们就具有了“意义”。社会学之美就在于此。

Dr. Richard, the deputy head of the social science group, once described sociology as follows: when the real world is presented to us, it is like a colorful, but somewhat messy and even unbearable picture. If there is a famous painting connoisseur at this time, teach us "theories" or “structures”. For example, tell which artist painted it? What genre does it belong to? How is the coordination between light, shadow, and color? What theme does it represent? At this time, the painting will become vivid and meaningful in our eyes. This is the beauty of sociology. 


社会学是一门实证性学科(empirical science),拥有长达近200年的理论基础,直至今天,社会学学者依然孜孜不倦地针对种种现代和后现代社会涌现出的社会现象进行剖析研究,以获得对社会乃至人性的深度理解。深国预的同学们通过社会这门课,可以对自己所身处的特定的社会境遇进行反思,从而更好地为自己未来的学习、工作和生活掌舵引航。

Sociology is an empirical science with a theoretical foundation of nearly 200 years. To this day, sociology scholars are still diligently analyzing and researching various social phenomena emerging in modern and postmodern societies in order to gain a deep understanding of society and even human nature. Through the course of society, SIFC students can reflect on the specific social situation they are in, so as to better guide their future study, work and life.



在深国预,社会学课程采用的是英国剑桥A Level考试局的课程大纲作为蓝本,结合任课教师Richard博士曾经在英国大学的任教经验,为SIFC学生量身定制。谈及课程内容,Richard博士说到:“一方面,我们不增加学生过多的应试和课业压力,另一方面,可以为高年级、有志于选择社会科学类专业的学生提供一种“准大学”课程的体验。在我的课堂上,学生可以结合社会热点议题,学习相关学术理论和研究方法,开展小组研讨会(seminar)和研究工作坊(workshop),在学期末以小组活动的形式,尝试提出切实可行的研究计划(research proposal),并鼓励部分学有余力的学生在课程之外基于研究计划进行实地研究,并期待将其成果发表在相应的刊物上。”

At SIFC, the sociology course adopts the syllabus of the Cambridge A-Level examination board as a blueprint and is tailored for SIFC students based on the teaching experience of the teacher Dr. Richard in British universities. Talking about the content of the course, Dr. Richard said: "On the one hand, we do not increase students' excessive test-taking and academic pressure;” course experience. In my class, students can combine hot topics in society, learn relevant academic theories and research methods, carry out seminars and workshops, try to put forward practical research proposals in the form of group activities at the end of the semester, and encourage some Students who have the spare capacity to conduct field research outside of the curriculum based on the research plan look forward to having their results published in appropriate journals."




重新认识你自己

——人类生物学

Human Biology



人类生物学是一个跨学科的课程,涵盖了解剖学、流行病学、人类学、营养学等诸多不同领域的内容。它与我们身体功能和日常生活密切相关。在深国预,人类生物学作为一门选修课,为的是让学生尽可能地从科学的角度了解自己与社会。从营养健康、人体构造到常见疾病等,学生通过课程从不同的维度加深对人体的认知。

Human Biology, as an elective, gives an opportunity to students who may not come from a scientific background to learn more about themselves and how the world influences them.  Topics ranging from Nutritional health to reasons behind our physiology to investigating common diseases give students a well-rounded knowledge about the human body.



深国预科学老师Jeffrey分享到:“我的教学理念是‘边做边学’,鼓励每个人参与实验和演示。几乎没有任何主题是“离题”的,我们鼓励学生提出自己感兴趣的领域供全班学习。只有这样,才能尽可能地培养学生兴趣,激发好奇心并开展独立的课题研究。”

SIFC Science Teacher Mr. Jeffrey said: "Theory aside, our motto is ‘learn by doing, and everyone is encouraged to take part in practical experiments and demonstrations. As well as our own curriculum, no topic is ‘off-topic’ and students are encouraged to come forward with their own areas of interest for the class to study. Through this, I aim to promote scientific inquiry, curiosity and independent research."

"The most fundamental skill that anyone can acquire is that of scientific theory.  I hope to instill the confidence in students to identify areas that they wish to investigate and teach them the tools for how to come to proper, informed conclusions.  In the so-called, information age, learning how to make educated, informed decisions on topics such as your own health is a must."



人类生物学就在我们身边,而深国预同学们近期针对食物热量开展的研究就是一个最好的证明。在Jeffrey老师的引导下,学生们通过尝试研究不同的食物类型来了解它们释放了多少能量,从而理解热量的概念。有趣的是,不少同学通过研究惊讶地发现日常零食中隐藏了大量能量,因此重塑了对食品与健康的认知。

Human biology is all around us, and the recent research conducted by SIFC students on food calories is the best proof. Most recently, students learned how to understand calorific values by experimenting with different food types to see how much energy they released. Discovering for themselves the widely varying amounts of energy they consume from their everyday snacks was alarming and hopefully steered a few to make better choices in the future.  




以设计思维为中心

——数制智造课程

Digital Fabrication



深国预不乏喜爱理工科的同学,他们对工程技术、科技行业、产品设计等领域有着浓厚的兴趣,而深国预数制智造课就是为这部分同学准备的。深国预将Fab Academy数制万物(How to make almost anything) 大学课程进行简化,使其内容难度与深国预学生相适配。数制智造是一门跨学科课程,涵盖了编程、3D设计、电子电路、物联网、应用开发等领域知识,向教授实用技术,培养设计思维。

Digital Fabrication is a simplified version of MIT HoMAA(How to make almost anything) for high school students. This course aims to cultivate comprehensive digital literacy and an ability to learn and collaborate in this age of the Internet. It integrates topics including software/hardware programming, 2d/3d design, electronic engineering, and fabrication. It suits students who would like to challenge themselves, locate their academic interests in STEM, and pursue job opportunities as product designers or startup leaders in the tech industry.



今年中秋节,数制智造课的同学们完成了一个有意义的项目——他们通过编程,绘制了主题为Faces of the moon的一系列动画。PBL创新教育中心课程主任Lit老师感慨道:“掌握代码对于学生来说其实不难,项目开始时,他们有一种发现新大陆的快乐。我确实看到很多学生成功地将自己的价值理念融合在作品之中,这是相当了不起的。”

During the Mid-Autumn Festival this year, the students in the Digital Fabrication class completed a meaningful project - they drew a series of animations themed Faces of the moon through programming. Miss Lit, course director of the PBL Innovation Education Center, said: "Mastering the code is not difficult for students. When the project starts, they have the joy of discovering a new world. I do see many students successfully integrate their own values into their works. It's pretty remarkable."



在课堂上,同学们还在老师的带领下使用3D打印机、激光切割机,这样丰富的体验激发了他们的学习积极性,也增长了他们在不同技术方向的背景知识。

In the class, the students also used 3D printers and laser-cutting machines under the supervision of the teacher. This rich experience stimulated their enthusiasm for learning and increased their background knowledge in different technical directions.

At SIFC, students have mastered the necessary subject knowledge through compulsory courses to meet the basic requirements of society. The existence of elective courses is to fully satisfy the interests of students, promote the development of personal expertise, and provide them with different ways of thinking about the world.
