Isabella's evaluation of the program

November 9, 2023, marks the 32nd National Fire Prevention Day in our country, and November is also designated as National Fire Safety Awareness and Education Month. In order to further strengthen fire safety education for teachers and students, enhance the fire safety awareness of the entire school community, master specific methods of self-rescue, evacuation, and self-protection, and establish a good fire safety environment, the school's safety department routinely conducts fire drill activities.

From mid-October until now, fifth-grade English teacher Zhao Jing has been guiding the children in project-based learning on "Nature and Disasters" in English. They are gaining an understanding of changes on the Earth's surface, the causes of Earth disasters, and ways for humans to coexist harmoniously with nature. They are learning about the occurrence of natural disasters, such as the formation of volcanic eruptions and forest spontaneous combustion fires.

Within the classroom, the children use various props or conduct scientific experiments to simulate natural disasters. Through experimental operations, they grasp the characteristics of these natural disasters and their corresponding destructiveness. The children work in groups to create posters and speeches on fire escape, but have consistently lacked learning about fire escape methods in a real environment.

So, the fire safety emergency evacuation drill conducted on the morning of November 28 became a real classroom, addressing both the entire school's teachers and students and the fifth-grade children's project-based learning.

Principal Deng Dengjiang said, "Transform activities into courses; all activities related to students on the campus should undergo overall curriculum planning and integration, in accordance with the norms and principles of curriculum operation."

For this fire drill, the school established an emergency evacuation drill command group, responsible for all aspects of the emergency evacuation drill. They carefully planned and defined emergency evacuation routes and safe havens in and around the school, and made thorough arrangements for the requirements of the drill and the handling of unexpected situations.

Before the evacuation, each class organized students to study fire safety education knowledge in the classroom. They understood the importance of the drill, mastered fire safety knowledge, evacuation precautions, became familiar with the correct methods and routes for fire evacuation, and learned the correct procedures for emergency response to fires.

The fifth-grade students who were implementing the project had already explored a lot through various forms, and the long-awaited real drill was about to begin.

At 9:50 in the morning, Assistant Principal Wei Xutao announced the official start of the fire emergency evacuation drill, and the fire alarm instantly sounded. All teaching staff took their designated positions according to the fire safety emergency plan. Each class teacher quickly directed and led the children to pick up wet towels, cover their mouths and noses, bend over, follow the predetermined evacuation route, evacuate through the designated exit at the fastest speed. Teachers closely monitored the safety of students throughout the drill. After reaching the safe zone, each class carefully counted the number of students. The entire drill process was tense and orderly, taking only 1 minute and 44 seconds from start to finish. Subsequently, the emergency medical rescue team conducted a simulation of a rescue scenario, and medical personnel provided on-site "medical treatment" to the "injured."

In the summary, Director Liang from the Safety Office emphasized the need to "be prepared for danger in times of peace," firmly establish fire safety awareness, and consciously learn fire safety knowledge. When danger approaches, it is essential to stay calm, and each department must fulfill its responsibilities to ensure the orderly evacuation of all teachers and students. Always prioritize life and safety, and be proactive in preventing potential "ignition."

Officers from the Wutong Mountain Fire Station provided detailed explanations on the use of fire extinguishers, and on-site firefighters demonstrated standard operating procedures simultaneously.

Learning that the fifth grade at the school engaged in project-based learning on natural disasters and fire evacuation in the classroom, the supervising fire officers were excited and praised the school's curriculum. When inviting student representatives for on-site fire extinguishing drills, some fifth-grade children and others were specifically named, guiding them on the proper use of fire extinguishers.

The children also had close encounters with fire trucks, exploring the purposes of various equipment inside. Director Liang from the Safety Office and the officers together introduced the important role of the equipment in firefighting and rescue operations. In a vivid and realistic environment, with direct perception, practical operation, and firsthand experience, the theoretical knowledge from the classroom was applied to a real environment. The fifth-grade children who had explored through project-based learning were particularly excited, and fire safety awareness naturally took root and sprouted in their hearts.

This drill not only familiarized all teachers and students with evacuation routes for fire emergencies but also equipped them with basic methods for rapid evacuation, self-rescue, and mutual assistance in danger. It strengthened the campus's "firewall" for safety and, at the same time, creatively expanded the real environment for interdisciplinary project-based learning at Huamei PBL, motivating students' intrinsic drive for learning.
