ISA Wuhan Secondary School conducted a CSI Day last Friday where they used science to solve the ‘murder’ of Mr. Ross (he did not really die).

A Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) project is a hands-on learning experience that allows students to explore the field of forensic science. In a CSI project, students learn about the different techniques that forensic scientists use to collect and analyze evidence at crime scenes. They also learn about the different types of evidence that can be found at crime scenes, and how this evidence can be used to solve crimes. 

CSI project covered several IB learner profiles. These are open-minded, thinking, risk-takers, communicators, and inquirers.

The CSI project took four weeks to design. The students learn the following through these types of days:

In this CSI project, our students conducted the following activities:

Fingerprints - are unique patterns of ridges on the fingers and toes. They are formed in the womb and remain unchanged throughout a person's life. This makes fingerprints an essential tool for forensic scientists. Students used them to identify suspects and an area of crime. They used a magnifying glass to study the fingerprint and identify its features. These features include the number of ridges, the ridges' direction, and the ridges' pattern.

Blood spatter analysis - examines bloodstains at a crime scene to determine the source of the blood, the direction of the bloodstains, and the force of the impact that caused the bloodstains. This information can be used to reconstruct the crime scene and to identify the perpetrator of the crime.

Once the Student has determined the shape of the bloodstains, they then determine the direction of the bloodstains. The direction of the bloodstains can tell the student the direction of the force that caused the bloodstains. For example, if a bloodstain is pointing towards a wall, then the bloodstain is likely caused by a blow to the head.

Handwriting analysis - is the study of handwriting to gain insights into the writer's personality, and character. Handwriting analysts look for a variety of factors in a person's handwriting, including:

Chromatography - is a technique used to separate the components of a mixture. It can identify the ink used in a pen, which can help solve crimes. For example, if a suspect's fingerprints are found at a crime scene, and the ink used to write a ransom note matches the ink used in the suspect's pen, then this can be used as evidence to link the suspect to the crime.

Hair analysis - is the process of examining hair to obtain information about the person from whom it came. This information can include the person's age, sex, race, health, and even their diet. Hair analysis can also be used to identify individuals, link individuals to crime scenes, and determine the time of death.

Microscopic hair analysis is a relatively simple and inexpensive technique. It can be used to determine the color, texture, and shape of the hair. It can also be used to determine the age of the hair, the sex of the person from whom it came, and the race of the person from whom it came.

A statement is a written or oral account of an event. An interview is a conversation between two or more people, usually conducted for the purpose of gathering information. In the context of crime scene investigation (CSI), statements and interviews of suspects are used to gather information about the crime and to identify and build a case against the suspect.

Crime scene photos - were taken at a crime scene. They are used to document the scene and to provide evidence for criminal investigations.

After the activities, students found they enjoyed the CSI project and liked seeing science in action. Next academic year, Mr. John Williams considers initiating a 'Zombie Invasion' project. Students will study transmission and survival in this project.
