In this world, reliable OR unreliable? Maybe it’s hard to give an answer, at least with Mark Ma, you might find it’s hard to make a snap judgement.

"I'm good at making friends, my friends always say I'm a social king." Vibrant and witty, the cleverness of his voice seems to be hidden by his simple laughter. Welcome to this episode of ISA Stary Cranes with Mark Ma, an 11th grade student at the ISA Wenhua Wuhan AP Centre.

"I don't really like those bureaucratic rules and regulations, and I've never been one to follow the rules in what I do. I think what I do is to be round on the outside and square on the inside; I like undaunted exploration, but I will never touch the bottom line, which is also a reflection of my inner square."

Mark Ma really does have a charisma that makes those around him gravitate towards him. In the 2023 Global Future Space Scholars Conference, which was just concluded on 13 August, Mark led the ISA Wuhan team and 48 students from more than 10 alumni schools in China to win the runner-up of the China team, and he also won the Best Leader Award and the Best Proposal Award, which was a great harvest.

"I think a good leader needs to lead by example, emphasise teamwork and co-ordination, actively listen to the opinions and suggestions of team members, and make sure everyone brings out their own strengths." Mark shared with us. Before joining ISA Wuhan, although he was still the "Social King" in the crowd, his lack of resilience in the face of competition and pressure was an obstacle he needed to overcome.

It is said that life is a long river that needs to be constantly crossed, and so is learning. Mark's innate love for business is like the legs on a pair of compasses. From assembling advanced materials, human habitats, life-support systems and automation technologies to producing a realistic project proposal, there are more than 10 disciplines other than business design that need to be involved in the preparation of the Space City Competition, and Mark is constantly drawing out the strings of his disciplines at his own pace.

"My favourite subject is business, and I also chose business practice in my school's CCA Extension course, in which I learnt a lot about the logic of business behaviour in life, giving me a foundation for practical competitions such as Space City, and my love for business has allowed me to continue to find a passion for learning other subjects in the interdisciplinary classroom at ISA Wuhan. "

Environmental Science, Computer Programming, 3D Printing, Smart Manufacturing ...... ISA Wuhan's signature STEAM science and technology programmes are designed to address the academic levels of students at different stages of their careers by designing a diverse range of pick-up-and-go learning programmes, as well as enrichment activities for students to choose from during the holidays, to help them apply the theoretical knowledge they have learnt in the classroom.

"We can simulate a coffee shop!" Speaking of this, Mark told us with great excitement that he found that the academic semester and holidays at ISA didn't seem to be very different, and that he had been "running around" in various "project teams", and that he had been playing the role of a "firefighter" every day. He was very excited to tell us that he had been "running around" in all the "project teams" and had been acting as an ad-hoc task handler every day, solving a lot of unexpected problems like a firefighter.

In book The Alchemist, there is this quote, "Life without coordinates is like a cluttered labyrinth. Everyone who steps into it, throughout their lives, is searching for their exit."

Unlike the teenager in the book who travelled only to Egypt to search for treasures, Mark's life coordinate is to go to the University of California, Berkeley Business School. Mark said he likes the multiculturalism, innovative atmosphere and corporate ecology there very much, so that he can closely link his knowledge learning with the local industry and pave the way for his future entrepreneurial route.

"After coming to ISA, I found that I was very interested in economics, and through my teacher's inspiration and various project assignments, I also gradually discovered that I was particularly good at macroeconomics and market analysis. One of the economic cases that my teacher talked about in class sparked my curiosity. I wondered how our economy developed step by step. Why is the unemployment rate still high? I like to find out the truth of some things in the process of studying economics, so that more people in the world can get a better distribution of resources."

If you want to study in the US and change the world, learning a good foreign language is the first step to anything, and Mark is working hard to make up for his shortcomings. Unlike a bunch of financial data that can be summed up at any time, learning English requires an environment that is nurtured and built up over time.

"My weak subject is English, for which I am making unremitting efforts with the help of my teachers and classmates. I have made a lot of foreign classmates friends in ISA, and we usually study and play together, which is the strongest study partner and the best companion, I feel my English is improving every day, and I also feel that I am one step closer to my dream school in the future. "

In the tense and full of learning, Mark will use photography and aeromodelling to "change the context". He said that when he feels relaxed, the works he creates will be especially good and have a great sense of achievement, and he recently won the first prize in the drone category of the National Youth Aerospace Modelling Education Competition. He is also quite talented in photography, and usually uses his camera to record life moments, as well as his own TikTok account.
